I live in Alaska and hall my own water, had to pull my water tank the other day and it still had a little water in it and it froze, so when I tried to put the tank back in the truck it was to heavy for me to do it myself. I was about to give up and wait for my son to get home from school and thought "What would Al do", he always figures something out when he has a problem. I thought ratchet straps, he always has a way to use his ratchet straps to help out. I wrapped my ratchet strap around the tank and was able to ratchet it up high enough to lift it in the back of the truck myself! Thanks for helping me think out of the box and to never give up, there is always a way, thanks!
That’s funny, when my daughter is building something we are in the same mind-set, “What would Al do in this situation”. Funny, then we laugh 😂 about it!
I agree. As Al started his buildings at the home front, I couldn’t wait each day to see the next video. Now it’s the Off-Grid property and, excitement all over again!
It sure is great watching you and Gina working together like that.. it reminds me so much of my whole family working together back in the 50s to have our vegetable garden, and then canning everything to last through the winter. We didn't raise our meet though, we were hunters and our meat was wild game and fish. But believe me, i enjoyed the fruits of our labors far more than the labor itself...

I always heard for garlic, plant after labor day weekend and harvest the week after 4th of July. It is like plant peas on St. Patricks' Day. They need to be tweaked for your zone, but pretty close.

That is a lot of garlic. I know Gina uses it to cook with every day though. I watched Ken's video yesterday, it was very interesting. He was making the template for the roof rafters. I am getting so excited for this build to start. Have a Blessed weekend everyone.
On the new garlic bed. What about taking some of the scrap wood you used for your concrete forms and make a U shaped border leaving it open on the side the water will be coming in. Less chance of it washing away while still getting the water coming in unimpeded.

If you push the long end of that green line back toward the hub enough will come out the other side to grab it with pliers. Hope that helps. We love our DR and quick load adapter. It’s a shoulder saver (from traditional weed wacker) that’s for sure.

For your weed whacker string use a piece of a metal coat hanger or a bamboo skewer. You should be able to push it out from the other side at that point.
You should put in a drain pipe under your foot scraping great so the melted snow has a place to drain. I would dig it out a little bit and line it with cement. That way you can wash it out under the great get all the mud and stuff out.
In the future, just place the garlic bulb on a flat surface, place your hand on the top of the bulb and press down sharply. The bulb will instantly segment into cloves. Saves time.

Greetings, we used to own a hog farm in the eighties and early nineties. We always used a local company to process our hogs. My wife and I had full time jobs in addition to the farm, so time was precious. On average about one hog every six months for our use. We also sold hogs to local customers and most times we would take them to the processor for our customers. All they had to do was provide a cut schedule to the processor, and then pick up the meat. We had one customer that always had the whole hog processed into sausage. Now you can officially call the OGP a farm with the addition of the first garden. We are looking forward to the build, it is going to be fun watching both channels and seeing the different perspectives. Thank you for sharing with us.

In Colorado we already have in ground. Garlic is planted in hills and needs to grow roots to hold in hills so when ground freezes and thaws roots will hold in ground, otherwise they will actually pop out of ground. We drip Irragation to get garlic rooted. My brother uses a holler to create for garlic.
I planted my garlic yesterday. Every year I double up how much I plant. Still have room to do more doubling up. Don't forget to fence this area in as moose and deer will eat the sprouted garlic. I have raised beds with a chicken wire fencing around it. 10 X 16 feet. Not wide enough for a deer to jump in then get out. Deer don't perceive distance well when they see two fences. Things are moving along well for the new property build.
Garlic, yum... There are so many food crops that require multiple seasons to grow it makes it difficult to start a new homestead... Don't forget a spot for the asparagus!

what a satisfying posting! The story telling was great, and it all flowed so very well. I had wondered about everything from the pigs to the livestock trailer, to the floor joists. You answered all those and at the same time gave us a sneak peak at the timeline that you are working with. I think we all are going to be very surprised as to how well this has been planned and how it will all fall together. I learned about garlic today, I did not know it took that long to grow. We use it but never paid any attention. Just another example of how much planning has to go into your world. And all on top of building the ogp up. You two are making and building a dream. If you want to plant things in straight lines use a scaffold board or similar, Auto straight lines, stops compaction of soil , keeps a lot of soil off of your boots.
Can't wait to see the tiny house going up. Good call on the garlic, getting it in now. Suggestion for the raised bed....surround it with boulders to box it in. It will help some with preventing wash out and just be nice to enclose it. Plus with your equipment, you can move them later if you don't continue to use it for a raised bed.

Good morning Al, Gina & Olivia. Watched Ken's vid yesterday, he showed some of the stock for your build. He started with laying out the roof rafters for the tiny house, I'm thinking he will be building from the TOP DOWN, ha ha !!!!!
for the trimmer line, I use needle nose pliers on the other side of the line. I get the tip of the pliers as close to the trimmer as I can, pinch the line and give it a tiny nudge, then repeat that until there's enough poking out the other side to grab it. Most of the time, just doing that will loosen the cam enough that the line will move easier.
I watched an episode of Ken’s carpentry and watched him cut the rafters for your tiny house so I know they’re done it’s just a matter of time before you start construction.
Great Job Al & Gina, just a suggestion have you thought of doing a front Porch along the front of the Tiny House 🏡? It would protect the front door from the rain & snow !!

To get the line out, perhaps you can get a small diameter deck or wood screw into it and then pull on the screw?
We have one of those trimmers, you should be able to push another line through that hole and it should push it out the other end

You should look into installing some Hugelkulture beds for the plants up there. It would all them to survive a lot better.

Push the Trimmer line through with a small screwdriver or something like that. Push it the same direction it is supposed to go.

Start a compost pile in the corner of garden withe garlic skins then add things to it as you go along.
Great progress. I love garlic. Garlic, onion, and ginger is the base for many of my favorite dishes. Fortunately, the pig loading went as smoothly.
Regarding the weed whacker, with that string cut flush, you might consider drilling into the center of that string to cause it to crumble.

Buckets already bowing in the middle you need to take it to a blacksmith and have it straightened and reinforced

FYI, you can get a large roll/spool of string in whatever gauge you want for lots less than buying individual pieces.
I can tell Gina has been dying to get crops in the ground. The joy in her voice after getting that job done was clear.
