Unfortunately, there is some confusion in the Sikh panth over whether the eating of meat is permitted for Amrit Dhari Sikhs. The Sikh Rehit Maryada prohibits the eating of “Kuttha” which is usually interpreted as meaning a slaughtered animal but some interpret it as referring to halaal meat which is the type of ritualized meat eaten by Muslims. However, by looking into Sikh history and most importantly, by looking towards Gurbani, it becomes clear that eating all kinds of meat is not permitted in Sikhi. In hukumnamas collected by Dr. Ganda Singh jee and published in his book ‘hukumnamas’ each one of Guru Hargobind Sahib’s hukumnamas state ‘guru guru japna janam savar sangat dee kamnaa guru pooree karraygaa. Sangatee da ruzgaar hog, ik daasee rahinaa. Maas muchee day naray nahee avanaa.’ The last line says not to even go near meat or fish. Bhai Gurdas jee, whose banee was called the key to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee by Guru Arjan Dev Jee says: ਸੀਹ ਪਜੂਤੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੜ ਹੜ ਹਸੀ|| ਸੀਹੁ ਪੁਛੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੋਇ ਇਤੁ ਅਉਸਰਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਰਹਸਿ ਰਹਸੀ|| ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰੇਂਦੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਕੀਚਨਿ ਖਸੀ|| ਅਕ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ ਕੁਹਿ ਕੁਹਿ ਖਲ ਉਖਲਿ ਵਿਣਸੀ|| ਮਾਸੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਗਲ ਵਢਿ ਕੈ ਹਾਲੁ ਤਿਨਾੜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਹੋਵਸੀ|| (Vaar 25-7) This means that the goat says, ‘I was eating Ak and Dhatura plants (weed plants found in India) for whole of my life, to which no body else liked to eat. And even then I am being brutally killed and my skin being ripped, What will happen to those who cut my throat and eat my meat? In another vaar, Bhai Gurdas jee talks about a goat being cut by butcher to be eaten : ਕੁਹੈ ਕਸਾਈ ਬਕਰੀ ਲਾਇ ਲੂਣ ਸੀਖ ਮਾਸੁ ਪਰੋਆ|| ਹਸਿ ਹਸਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਕੁਹੀਂਦੀ ਖਾਧੇ ਅਕਿ ਹਾਲੁ ਇਹੁ ਹੋਆ|| ਮਾਸ ਖਾਨਿ ਗਲਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਦੇ ਹਾਲੁ ਤਿਨਾੜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਅਲੋਆ|| (Vaar 37-21) This means that the goat is being killed, cut into pieces and salt being spread on the pieces. While being killed goat says this all happened to me while I was just eating Ak plant (weed found in India’s desert fields). In last line goat puts a question, what will be the fate of those in the court of god who cut my throat with a knife and eat my meat? In Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee, there are also lots of references which establish that it is important not to eat meat. ਕਬੀਰ ਜੋਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਜੁਲਮੁ ਹੈ ਲੇਇ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਖੁਦਾਇ || ਦਫਤਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਨੀਕਸੈ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਹੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਖਾਇ ||੨੦੦|| meaning it is evil to use force and kill, god will certainly take you to task for it. And ਕਬੀਰ ਭਾਂਗ ਮਾਛੁਲੀ ਸੁਰਾ ਪਾਨਿ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਖਾਂਹਿ || ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕੀਏ ਤੇ ਸਭੈ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ||੨੩੩|| here Kabeer jee clearly states eating meat, fish and drinking liquor is wrong and religion is not possible while eating these. ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਹਹੁ ਮਤ ਝੂਠੇ ਝੂਠਾ ਜੋ ਨ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ || ਜਉ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਕਹਤ ਹਉ ਤਉ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਰਗੀ ਮਾਰੈ ||੧|| meaning, the Semitic and Hindu scriptures aren’t false, false is he who does not reflect on them. If they say that there is god in all, then why do you kill a chicken? Finally, Bhagat Kabeer jee says ਕਬੀਰ ਖੂਬੁ ਖਾਨਾ ਖੀਚਰੀ ਜਾ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਲੋਨੁ || ਹੇਰਾ ਰੋਟੀ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਗਲਾ ਕਟਾਵੈ ਕਉਨੁ ||੧੮੮|| meaning it is good to eat kicharee (mixture of rice and pulses), that has been tastefully prepared with salt. Who should risk having their throat cut (in the after life) just for a meal of meat and bread? Mercy is of utmost importance in gurmat ਦਇਆ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੇਇ || from aasaa dee vaar tells us to have mercy on all living things. Guru jee also tells us ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਿਸੈ ਜੀਅ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਵਉ || give pain to no living thing, go home with honour. ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਗਲ ਪੁੰਨ ਜੀਅ ਦਇਆ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ || meaning: Going to the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage, of greater merit and acceptance is having mercy upon living things.

Rabbit was the most widely eaten meat for europeans (other rodents in other countries) until WWI - it was the fastest growing and cheapest to feed meat animal, so it offered a lot! Not surprizing it is making a comeback.
Wire flooring is fine - IF the mesh is small enough. In this case the mesh is too large and puts unnecessary pressure on the animal's feet. If you have to use a wire mesh that size, then put in plastic grids that DO support the feet. What would be ideal is a colony setup. Much more natural and humane, but it is much harder to handle the breeding of the stock.
Rabbits cry sounding EXACTLY like human babies when you slaughter them. My old man had me kill a barn full when I was 12, scores all crying at once. I have the privilege of living in modern culture, where (barring a major disaster) I can CHOOSE not to eat or use the products of animal exploitation. Of course y'all can just buy these critters all segmented into plastic packaging and not think about this, in which case your privilege is your ignorance. This business has been totally a flop in Maharashtra. Companies that promised to take back the rabbits for sale, after sometime just disappeared. Farmers were left high and dry. Marketing is a very big problem

Completely unethical. I have seen how zealous new parents buy rabbits for their kids only to throw them away like garbage two weeks later, I have seen so called pet enthusiasts buy rabbits only to give them away when they realize they are too much work. Dogs and cats can survive in streets in India but rabbits cannot. They are at the bottom of the food chain and breeding them like this only brings them pain.
This is unacceptable. It's cruel to the rabbits. Sir can you not see that? You should keep your rabbits in a more suitable environment that meets their needs, not small wire cages like that. You are not giving these rabbits a nice life! This is pretty disgusting actually. Shame on you.

Did you know that you can actually starve on a diet of rabbit? Your body uses more energy to process the meat than you get from it nutritionally. So you can fill your belly but it's not healthy for you. This is one very good reason why it's not considered kosher meat to eat. Rabbits definitely have a place in our ecosystem but they weren't meant to be food for us.
I am not against the use of rabbits for meat, but they should be kept humanely. Wire bottom cages are awful for rabbits’ feet, and these poor animals can’t even stand upright in their cages. Animals should be given respect and humane environments if we are going to use them.

Others, who cook food for their own enjoyment, verily eat only sin. Commentary In the Vedic tradition, food is cooked with the consciousness that the meal is for the pleasure of God. A portion of the food items is then put in a plate and a verbal or mental prayer is made for the Lord to come and eat it. After the offering, the food in the plate is considered prasād (grace of God). All the food in the plate and the pots is then accepted as God’s grace and eaten in that consciousness. Other religious traditions follow similar customs. Christianity has the sacrament of the Eucharist, where bread and wine are consecrated and then partaken. Shree Krishna states in this verse that eating prasād (food that is first offered as a sacrifice to God) releases one from sin, while those who eat food without offering commit sin. The question may arise whether we can offer non-vegetarian items to God and then accept the remnants as his prasād. The answer to this question is that the Vedas prescribe a vegetarian diet for humans, which includes grains, pulses and beans, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, etc. Apart from the Vedic culture, many spiritually evolved souls in the history of all cultures around the world also rejected a non-vegetarian diet that makes the stomach a graveyard for animals. Even though many of them were born in meat-eating families, they gravitated to a vegetarian lifestyle as they advanced on the path of spirituality. We then look upon our body as the property of God, which has been put under our care for his service. And we partake of permitted food, as his grace, with the intention that it will nourish the body. In this sentiment, the entire process is consecrated to the Divine. The Manusmriti discusses diet in chapter 5, where like other Hindu texts, it includes verses that strongly discourage meat-eating, as well as verses where meat-eating is declared appropriate in times of adversity and various circumstances, recommending that the meat in such circumstances be produced with minimal harm and suffering to the animal. The same people who complain about farming practices and 'animal cruelty' are the same people who run around in grocery stores looking for the 'cheapest' meat or chicken! You want to buy chicken for next to nothing and yet you expect the farmer to spend all his time and resources cosseting animals which you are not ready to pay for? Many people behave like children! Modern conveniences has made them ungrounded and unrealistic in their expectation - heck, I have seen some Americans even squirm at the thought of killing an animal and yet, the very same people want to eat beef, chicken and port at dinner! I used to eat all kind of meat. I left it after knowing how dangerous farmed meat is for environment and after getting into touch with Acharya Prashant.
Unfortunately, there is some confusion in the Sikh panth over whether the eating of meat is permitted for Amrit Dhari Sikhs. The Sikh Rehit Maryada prohibits the eating of “Kuttha” which is usually interpreted as meaning a slaughtered animal but some interpret it as referring to halaal meat which is the type of ritualized meat eaten by Muslims. However, by looking into Sikh history and most importantly, by looking towards Gurbani, it becomes clear that eating all kinds of meat is not permitted in Sikhi.
In hukumnamas collected by Dr. Ganda Singh jee and published in his book ‘hukumnamas’ each one of Guru Hargobind Sahib’s hukumnamas state ‘guru guru japna janam savar sangat dee kamnaa guru pooree karraygaa. Sangatee da ruzgaar hog, ik daasee rahinaa. Maas muchee day naray nahee avanaa.’ The last line says not to even go near meat or fish.
Bhai Gurdas jee, whose banee was called the key to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee by Guru Arjan Dev Jee says:
ਸੀਹ ਪਜੂਤੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੜ ਹੜ ਹਸੀ||
ਸੀਹੁ ਪੁਛੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੋਇ ਇਤੁ ਅਉਸਰਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਰਹਸਿ ਰਹਸੀ||
ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰੇਂਦੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਕੀਚਨਿ ਖਸੀ||
ਅਕ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ ਕੁਹਿ ਕੁਹਿ ਖਲ ਉਖਲਿ ਵਿਣਸੀ||
ਮਾਸੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਗਲ ਵਢਿ ਕੈ ਹਾਲੁ ਤਿਨਾੜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਹੋਵਸੀ|| (Vaar 25-7)
This means that the goat says, ‘I was eating Ak and Dhatura plants (weed plants found in India) for whole of my life, to which no body else liked to eat. And even then I am being brutally killed and my skin being ripped, What will happen to those who cut my throat and eat my meat?
In another vaar, Bhai Gurdas jee talks about a goat being cut by butcher to be eaten :
ਕੁਹੈ ਕਸਾਈ ਬਕਰੀ ਲਾਇ ਲੂਣ ਸੀਖ ਮਾਸੁ ਪਰੋਆ||
ਹਸਿ ਹਸਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਕੁਹੀਂਦੀ ਖਾਧੇ ਅਕਿ ਹਾਲੁ ਇਹੁ ਹੋਆ||
ਮਾਸ ਖਾਨਿ ਗਲਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਦੇ ਹਾਲੁ ਤਿਨਾੜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਅਲੋਆ|| (Vaar 37-21)
This means that the goat is being killed, cut into pieces and salt being spread on the pieces. While being killed goat says this all happened to me while I was just eating Ak plant (weed found in India’s desert fields). In last line goat puts a question, what will be the fate of those in the court of god who cut my throat with a knife and eat my meat?
In Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee, there are also lots of references which establish that it is important not to eat meat. ਕਬੀਰ ਜੋਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਜੁਲਮੁ ਹੈ ਲੇਇ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਖੁਦਾਇ || ਦਫਤਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਨੀਕਸੈ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਹੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਖਾਇ ||੨੦੦|| meaning it is evil to use force and kill, god will certainly take you to task for it. When you must present your deeds in the court of god, you will face blows to the face. And ਕਬੀਰ ਭਾਂਗ ਮਾਛੁਲੀ ਸੁਰਾ ਪਾਨਿ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਖਾਂਹਿ || ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕੀਏ ਤੇ ਸਭੈ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ||੨੩੩|| here Kabeer jee clearly states eating meat, fish and drinking liquor is wrong and religion is not possible while eating these. ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਹਹੁ ਮਤ ਝੂਠੇ ਝੂਠਾ ਜੋ ਨ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ || ਜਉ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਕਹਤ ਹਉ ਤਉ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਰਗੀ ਮਾਰੈ ||੧|| meaning, the Semitic and Hindu scriptures aren’t false, false is he who does not reflect on them. If they say that there is god in all, then why do you kill a chicken? Finally, Bhagat Kabeer jee says ਕਬੀਰ ਖੂਬੁ ਖਾਨਾ ਖੀਚਰੀ ਜਾ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਲੋਨੁ || ਹੇਰਾ ਰੋਟੀ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਗਲਾ ਕਟਾਵੈ ਕਉਨੁ ||੧੮੮|| meaning it is good to eat kicharee (mixture of rice and pulses), that has been tastefully prepared with salt. Who should risk having their throat cut (in the after life) just for a meal of meat and bread?
Mercy is of utmost importance in gurmat ਦਇਆ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੇਇ || from aasaa dee vaar tells us to have mercy on all living things. Guru jee also tells us ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਿਸੈ ਜੀਅ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਵਉ || give pain to no living thing, go home with honour. ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਗਲ ਪੁੰਨ ਜੀਅ ਦਇਆ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ || meaning: Going to the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage, of greater merit and acceptance is having mercy upon living things.

Wire flooring is fine - IF the mesh is small enough. In this case the mesh is too large and puts unnecessary pressure on the animal's feet. If you have to use a wire mesh that size, then put in plastic grids that DO support the feet. What would be ideal is a colony setup. Much more natural and humane, but it is much harder to handle the breeding of the stock.

Rabbits cry sounding EXACTLY like human babies when you slaughter them. My old man had me kill a barn full when I was 12, scores all crying at once. I have the privilege of living in modern culture, where (barring a major disaster) I can CHOOSE not to eat or use the products of animal exploitation. Of course y'all can just buy these critters all segmented into plastic packaging and not think about this, in which case your privilege is your ignorance. (The mothers would eat their babies heads off so they didn't have to live like this, in cages...)

Completely unethical. I have seen how zealous new parents buy rabbits for their kids only to throw them away like garbage two weeks later, I have seen so called pet enthusiasts buy rabbits only to give them away when they realize they are too much work. Dogs and cats can survive in streets in India but rabbits cannot. They are at the bottom of the food chain and breeding them like this only brings them pain.
This is unacceptable. It's cruel to the rabbits. Sir can you not see that? You should keep your rabbits in a more suitable environment that meets their needs, not small wire cages like that. You are not giving these rabbits a nice life! This is pretty disgusting actually. Shame on you.

Did you know that you can actually starve on a diet of rabbit? Your body uses more energy to process the meat than you get from it nutritionally. So you can fill your belly but it's not healthy for you. This is one very good reason why it's not considered kosher meat to eat. Rabbits definitely have a place in our ecosystem but they weren't meant to be food for us.

BG 3.13: The spiritually-minded, who eat food that is first offered in sacrifice, are released from all kinds of sin. Others, who cook food for their own enjoyment, verily eat only sin.
Commentary
In the Vedic tradition, food is cooked with the consciousness that the meal is for the pleasure of God. A portion of the food items is then put in a plate and a verbal or mental prayer is made for the Lord to come and eat it. After the offering, the food in the plate is considered prasād (grace of God). All the food in the plate and the pots is then accepted as God’s grace and eaten in that consciousness. Other religious traditions follow similar customs. Christianity has the sacrament of the Eucharist, where bread and wine are consecrated and then partaken. Shree Krishna states in this verse that eating prasād (food that is first offered as a sacrifice to God) releases one from sin, while those who eat food without offering commit sin.
The question may arise whether we can offer non-vegetarian items to God and then accept the remnants as his prasād. The answer to this question is that the Vedas prescribe a vegetarian diet for humans, which includes grains, pulses and beans, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, etc. Apart from the Vedic culture, many spiritually evolved souls in the history of all cultures around the world also rejected a non-vegetarian diet that makes the stomach a graveyard for animals. Even though many of them were born in meat-eating families, they gravitated to a vegetarian lifestyle as they advanced on the path of spirituality. Here are quotations from some famous thinkers and personalities advocating vegetarianism:
“To avoid causing terror to living beings, let the disciple refrain from eating meat… the food of the wise is that which is consumed by the sādhus; it does not consist of meat.” The Buddha.

In this verse, Shree Krishna goes further and says that even vegetation contains life, and if we eat it for our own sense enjoyment, we get bound in the karmic reactions of destroying life. The word used in the verse is ātma-kāraṇāt, meaning “for one’s individual pleasure.” However, if we eat food as remnants of yajña offered to God then the consciousness changes. We then look upon our body as the property of God, which has been put under our care for his service. And we partake of permitted food, as his grace, with the intention that it will nourish the body. In this sentiment, the entire process is consecrated to the Divine. Bharat Muni states:
vasusato kratu dakṣhau kāla kāmau dṛitiḥ kuruḥ
pururavā madravāśhcha viśhwadevāḥ prakīrtitāḥ [v8]
“Violence is caused unknowingly to living entities in the process of cooking, by the use of the pestle, fire, grinding instruments, water pot, and broom. Those who cook food for themselves become implicated in the sin. But yajña nullifies the sinful reactions.”

Why is Down to Earth promoting such misguided videos...? Rabbits are meant to live in burrows with their families & hop around eating fresh grass. They are small& gentle animals. Pls stop the promotion of such cruel breeding for painful lab and product testing.

The Manusmriti discusses diet in chapter 5, where like other Hindu texts, it includes verses that strongly discourage meat-eating, as well as verses where meat-eating is declared appropriate in times of adversity and various circumstances, recommending that the meat in such circumstances be produced with minimal harm and suffering to the animal.
The verses 5.48-5.52 of Manusmriti explain the reason for avoiding meat as follows (abridged),
One can never obtain meat without causing injury to living beings... he should, therefore, abstain from meat. Reflecting on how meat is obtained and on how embodied creatures are tied up and killed, he should quit eating any kind of meat... The man who authorizes, the man who butchers, the man who slaughters, the man who buys or sells, the man who cooks, the man who serves, and the man who eats - these are all killers. There is no greater sinner than a man who, outside of an offering to gods or ancestors, wants to make his own flesh thrive at the expense of someone else's.
