  • Anyone else feel like they've hit a wall when it comes to purchasing new gear? Like it no longer makes the impact that it once did years ago? Well there's a reason why...
    I know we all love gear and I am no exception! In this video I talk about some boundaries that I felt I needed to place around gear purchases temporarily to help focus my attention on what really matter - playing guitar.
    Hopefully you all can learn from my journey and maybe you'll find it resonates with you as well!

    I have gone down this rabbit hole with art supplies. I now have more paints, brushes, canvas etc than I need. I am currently doing a NO BUY 2024 for art supplies and trying to use my energy to master my craft………..but I need I need to replace the dopamine feeling of the new gear. I liked buy artist grade oil paints used on eBay or Market Place, so my cost of this collecting is not significant. I took a workshop with a Master Artist and his gear of art supplies was so minimal, next to nothing really. He only had the essentials and he is world renowned. This opened my eyes. Go to any golf course and you will see older guys with old clubs……don’t underestimate them or get involved in playing for a friendly match for money. They guys know how to use those clubs…….great video

    I find myself intrigued by the idea of exploring new sounds and experiences, not necessarily because I feel my current gear is lacking, but simply out of curiosity and the joy of experimentation. It's not about needing a new piece of equipment for my music; rather, it's about the excitement of trying something different and seeing how it can enhance my creative process. Anyone else feel the same way?

      Nice! That's super interesting. I found that it felt more like a cycle of always needing more for me. Less on the "new sounds/experiences" and more on just trying to occupy/distract myself under the mask of gear

    VERY well said. Yeah --- as a musician, photographer ( @freshouttafocus ) and drag-racer it can get goofy quick. Like I tell a lot of the street photographers "you can't buy talent" in photography. You can certainly buy QUALITY - but you'll still have a higher quality image of the same shitty composition. LOL. You simply can't cheat the game... the game ALWAYS knows how much time you've put in. I have absolutely destroyed $80,000 Vettes at the grag-strip in my 1995 Honda CIvic because KNOW HOW (talent) tends to be the equalizer. With that said - I've got to go because I got 2 new pedals arriving today from Reverb and I need to look out for the UPS guy - pahahaha.
    PS: new lenses/pedals certainly can get us out of ruts where we are more motivated to get out and use them. But that is INDIRECTLY making us better... bc if we got out w/ our current gear the same way we'd get better with that as well. Cheers!

    Great segment. I find myself very gear addicted, which takes away from the music. Got to rectify this....

      Yep - it's a real thing bro. If I was smart I'd be digging on my new Aeros looper... but I have it set to freeform mode just so I don't have to. The way I have it setup I should've kept the Ditto. Same w/ my programmable Source Audio pedals. I have them - but I am using 1% of what they can do while simultaneously looking for another pedal that can do what my SA Spectrum could do if I'd just program it to do so. I'm more focused on the gear than just playing bass.

    I have a core sound, built of high quality standard stuff. I also like screwing around with experimental stuff and for that I go DI into an iPad.

      How do you do it ? I tried with my phone but too much latency (android )

    • @mooseymoose
      @mooseymoose 3 місяці тому

      Well it helps to have a good interface, but it was pretty decent latency even with a scarlett. I can’t say anything good about audio on android. A second hand ipad will be a million times better experience as long as you get one with usb c port.@@johnf.r6658

    • @mooseymoose
      @mooseymoose 3 місяці тому

      I replied yesterday but the post went missing apparently. I said that my experience with android audio was terrible and the cheapest ipad with usb c would be a thousand times better. A good interface helps but a Focusrite is plenty adequate.@@johnf.r6658

    true always wanting more but could never justify it except the guitars i am building right now or that i am modding. also just playin to jam tracks is what i try doing more and more because it brings fun and also you get to improve the fretboard navigation

    I have spent a lot of time in the last few years in this state. I bought the Quad Cortex and as great as it was, I did not bond with it. I then built a nice small pedalboard and ended up using it when I play weekly at church. The QC sat mostly on my desktop for a year. Last month I sold the QC. I bought the Tone Master Pro. I like it better.
    The Law of Diminishing Returns is truly real. I have had this adventure with the Audiophile world as well. When you get up into the mid range of these things it takes hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to get as little as a 5% improvement. Of course these things are unique not only to the music world. Bottom line is I need to spend more time on my instrument. Gratefulness and Mindfulness are powerful tools we can use to enhance what we already have. Less is more as you said too.
    Thanks for taking the time to address this issue. I enjoyed and was encouraged by your sharing. God bless you and all you love!

      Facts. Look at "best mini pedalboard" by Nobes Music ( ua-cam.com/video/8YDR4eCXdIY/v-deo.html ). Seeing how simple this thing is made me look at my board and HATE it - hahaha. I'm trying WAYYY too hard. I need to put my focus back on the music.

    I have a real bad addiction for equipment. No one has told me I had to much, but I felt it personally when I was on reverb more then out putting tracks. People have been impressed with my gear but I don’t want that. I want them to be impressed with my musical accompaniments or musical discoveries

    Hx stomp, helix native, tele, HH guitar, strat, bass, midi keyboard, microfreak synth, pc or Mac, logic, focusrite scarlet is what I use most for live and studio work. All amps other guitars and pedals gather dust. Btw great tip to wait it out. You may have that high because yt reviews but wait it out and you probably won’t want it and realize you never needed it after a few weeks go by

    Bruce Lee one said I don’t fear the man that can kick 10,000 ways I fear the man that can kick one way 10,000 time I think finding the right Guitar that can handle everything that you want to play in mastering. It is more important the hard part is as a guitarist, how you evolve and play. I have six guitars right now I’m looking to get rid of all of them and get the Dgt. I want one Guitar and I can do a lot with.

    • @ZachBrobstMusic

      Different guitars still do different things for me - have picked up my semi for first time in a while and that led to different playing and then moved to acoustic which moved me to my classical - variety keeps me out of getting bored in a rut

      There's this guy that comes to the drag strip - he's had the same busted Foxboby m Mustang since high-school. Since then I've gone through 15 different racecars easily. Now - he's not the fastest guy out there --- he's not even as fast as me. But I'll tell you what - he KNOWS how to get that thing down the road and beats a lot of cars that on paper he shouldn't. He's SO familiar with it that it's the built-in cheat code. It's like Wille Nelson and Trigger... she might not be the latest and greatest but in his hands she's amazing.

    Imo if you’re going old-school ONE decent amp, a boost pedal/distortion, a loop station,
    MAYBE an effect of your choosing that the amp is missing, 1-2 Mid-level guitars (for single coils and humbucker capability), and an acoustic guitar are all most non-gigging musicians will ever need.
    The requirements go down to 2-3 guitars if you just use plugins. 1 guitar if you’re realllllly set on a specific genre.

    Better at what, at having fun? And why? If I'm happy it's right since it's a hobby.
    If spending 100 hours looking for an amp and 1 actually playing but im happy for 101 hours then I'm doing it right.
    Out of the scope of the hobbist if you want to be a professional gear engineering and sales is much easier and much more profitable than guitar player so studying gear it's also a better career choice than practicing guitar.

    • @ZachBrobstMusic

      @@xNimrod97x Haha! I was a Youth Pastor for 7 years about 30 years ago... it was the toughest job I ever loved! I look back and don't even know outside of the grace of God how I did it. Working a full time job and doing things almost every night of the week. One of the things that I always think about is how my relationship with my dogs is a bit like us and God. My dogs can chew on my furniture and poop on my floors and I still love them. God is constantly cleaning up after me and never rubs my face in that fact. He loves us because He wants to. He is never disappointed in us because He never has false expectations. God bless! Have a great day!
