  • In this fly tying tutorial Cheech ties the Sparkle Gnat!
A long time ago I used to fish a fly exactly like this but the body was made out of glass bead sections. This type of fly became a staple for me, especially as the midge season progressed. When the fish seem to have seen everything, wanted something just a little bit different to show them. In this method shown, you add durability to the fly by wrapping the hackle through resin, and yes, it does float. Mix up sizes in colors to match your fishing locations where you live!

I like it! It's going on my "flies to tie" list. Also, you guys make the best tying videos with clear instructions, clear video, links to materials with alternatives, all with a sense of humor. Keep up the great work!

Boom, love this pattern and the fact you can make it bombproof is even better. Big fan of your videos, especially the skill builder vids as I'm relatively new at this. Muchas gracias!

This fly simply works! Thanks for the video Cheech. I was able to limit out on trout 3 days last weekend and hopefully can this weekend too.

Mario Capovia (Argentinean fly tier) created the Epoxy Bugger, a version of the woolly bugger using a similar technique. Epoxy instead of UV resin and he would also peel one side of the hackle, so the side with no fibres would sit on the epoxy. I have tied it following his recipe but having to wait for the epoxy to be at the right consistency and all that made it a bit tedious. This is much better, thank you Cheech!!!!

That's a great tie. Simple workhorse fly and incorporating the UV resin is a nice improvement, making up for the major drawback of the Griffith's gnat (durability). Griffith's gnat can stand in for almost anything. Would also be a good technique to try on a Brown Bivisible, an absolute killer pattern that also has durability issues.

Cheech, nice take on a Griffiths Gnat. You seen or tried a Double Badger? A Derbyshire/Staffordshire England pattern take on a Gnat

The materials listing that pops up completely covers the closed captions. Not sure if you can adjust the materials to another spot?

Quick question brother? Does all that resin weigh fly down so it sinks or does she still float ok?

Floats great. Lots of displacement with hackle

SwissCDC dubbing spinner with peacock and extra small wire makes Griffith's Gnat indestructible. The peakcock and wire are just wound around each other AKA wire brush.

I’ve been tying a fly just like this for years. For whatever reason, the peacock hurl version fishes better.

It’s called a Griffiths Gnat. How you you get the hurl to stick to the fly? Sounds messy.
