    I had an ep something back in the day. I brought it to the very famous Masters Golf tournament with an adapted Pentax 135 mm f2.8 lens which is very compact and gave me a 270 mm equivalent. At the entrance everyone who had any type of camera they felt could take a decent picture and make a noise from the gallery the camera was not allowed in. My little camera was overlooked and passed through and I ended up getting some great shots of Tiger Woods ,excellent quality ,no noise electronic shutter ,16 MP sharp as a tack shots.

    I just started photography with an EM-10 MkII and I couldn't be happier. There is a learning curve that pushes you to get better but it is more like a gentle slope rather than climbing mount everest.
    I got 3 M.Zuiko lenses for it and they can cover almost every ground.
    The pancake 14-42 kit lens
    The 40-150 mm zoom lens
    The 45mm 1.8f prime lens
    Its so much fun to try to extract the best out of all of them.
    Thank you for your videos there are highly informative and friendly.

    I have an EPL7 and an EM10-II, purchased second-hand several years ago to replace my E420 DSLR.. Both cameras have the Myset feature which allowed four custom modes and which Olympus has dropped from all their cameras. The EPL7 allows use of an external microphone via the accessory port, again dropped from all cameras. I like them both. They have a solid metal feel without being heavy and the EPL7 is particularly easy to carry in one's pocket, especially when a pancake lens is fitted. I upgraded to an EM5-III and an EM1-II but still enjoy using the EPL7 and EM10-II with their tilt screens and ability to have four Myset custom modes on the mode dial.

      Yeah I wish Olympus kept the accessory port on newer E-PL bodies, as well as the myset modes on the mode dial!

    The OM10 II is the best of the OM10 series for street photography, very pleasant to use thanks to mysets and customizable functions, it also has a magnesium alloy body. I especially regret the absence of minimum speed which often forces you to choose speed priority. I only use my em5 III for landscapes, professional zooms and bad weather...

    I've taken the OMD Mark 10 all over the US, Mexico, and Canada and (I will be using it on my next trip to Europe) it's been great. I've used it for landscape, people, and animal photography. Love that it's lightweight and produces excellent quality. Used with DXO for photo processing and its top-notch quality. I use only Olympus lenses.

    I have the E-PL7 and E-M10 Marki iii. These were my first two Olympus cameras. I eventually bought an E-M5 Mark iii but still use the other cameras as a backup. I do use the accessory EVF on the E-PL7. It's too bad that is not an option on later Pen series cameras. I agree that image quality is more or less identical between the two series. I especially appreciate the compact size of the Pen and E-M10 series cameras.

    Love my EM10iv. It’s a camera that’s light and fits into my handbag with a small lens attached or the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f4-f5.6 II attached. It’s the camera I use when I don’t want to think about settings etc, as I do with my EM1iii. Great for those moments when you don’t want to carry a heavier camera. I’m always amazed at what it does, how quickly it works and how it produces fabulous photos!

    I have an E-M10-Mk4 as well as an E-M1Mk2. I highly recommend the E-M10-Mk4 as a camera for the beginner who wants to learn the technical basics of photography (the exposure triangle, use of specialized or manual lenses, etc). The controls necessary for such learning are far more accessible with an E-M10 than with any of the E-PL series, which can be quite clumsy to operate in any other than an automatic mode. And, for a budding hobbyist, the jump from an E-M10 upwards to an E-M1/5 or OM-1/5 will be easier because controls will be familiar. If one can live without a viewfinder but still want fuller control, I'd recommend the regular Olympus Pen lineup (E-P vs E-PL). I have a gorgeous silver/black E-P5 (which actually takes a clip-on viewfinder) which I take out if I want to look real cool with my gear. But beware: here in the USA it can difficult to find any E-P or E-PL camera, even on the used market, and the latest rumors are that the E-M10-Mk4 may be going out of production. Get yours now!

I've had a selection of E-PL cams at different times and have some super photos from them, I still have an evf for them so who know in the future. Great Review and I love your photos. I have an E-PL9 in Blue, an EM10 Mk 3 and an EM5 Mk 3. As far as I know, the main difference between the E-PL9 and the EM 10 Series ist the five Axis Stabilizier of the EM10 versus the three Axis Stabilizer of the E-PL9.
    Personally I agree with your asessment of the two. The E-PL 9 is small and easy to take with you anywhere with the 14-42 EZ Lens. The EM10 is good to handle with a slightly larger lens like the 12-45 Pro with great results. Any casual shooter looking for a camera to take along anywhere and not care about manual settings or constant adjustments should get an E-PL.

    Hi Robin great video as usual. I have just added an EPL1 to my MFT camera collection. It was so inexpensive I couldn’t resist it. Yes it has its restrictions but it’s a super lightweight carry about. Your helpful video for checking shutter count has worked ….thanks again. Out of the EM10 range and EPL range I would tend to lean towards the EM range for the built in EVF.

    Very interesting video. So, I own the EPL-7, best I can afford. I started trying to break into the photographer scene late last year, and I have had a small amount of paid work from it. I was so worried about the limitations at first not having a viewfinder etc but I found the limitations extremely easy to get used to, and image quality has satisfied everyone who's paid me. I have invested anything I've been paid back into lenses because so far, only the lack of weather sealing has limited me. Obviously I'll replace when I can afford to I'm surprised that I'm not constantly being hit by limitations of the camera.

    I have the E-M10 Mk4 and I got infected with the shutter bug and picked up a used professional E-M1 Classic just to learn and understand the more advanced features. Obviously, it's not letting go and I am just shooting more and more while practicing/learning about photography. I think the latest and greatest E-M10 will get you going because it is so easy to handle and carry around. Because of that, you start to appreciate the benefits it brings, when you up size to a pro level micro four thirds camera or the larger formats, APS-C, full frame, etc. I think for the pricing it's not worth getting new and instead just hold out for the E-M5 instead, or pick one up used that is several hundred dollars cheaper than new retail.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому +1

      There are certain features that older E-M5 cameras may lack, for example the first E-M5 does not have live composite, or the E-M5 Mark II does not have 4K recording, like the newer E-M10 Mark III, so it all comes down to what you need. I personally use E-M5 Mark III, I love the video features.

    I had the E-PM1 and E-PM2, both with the (then available) plug-in EVFs, and I really liked them. Especially the E-PM2 was of good image quality, and the handling was fine (even though it had only one wheel on the back, but it worked fine to adjust settings on the fly). But the EVF was crucial for me, so today I would only go for the E-M10 series cameras, even though they are slightly larger (still quite small and lightweight). I own an E-M10II alongside my Pen F, and find it to be quite good for everyday use, even though the image quality can't compete with the Pen F.

    Enjoyable video as always. You say, early on, that neither of these are designed for professional use. That's as may be, but I successfully use my EM10 mk3s professionally alongside my EM1, especially when I don't need the extra facilities, OR the extra weight of the EM1!

    • @robinwong

      I guess, the "professional" design I was referring to was mostly on build quality, eg magnesium alloy body, weather-sealing, etc. But yes, for imaging capabilities, the E-M10 series, as I have mentioned in the video, is also very capable.

    I have the E-PL9 and I don't really like it. It is beautiful to look at, no doubt, but I find it obsolete as a camera.
    I used to like Pen cameras. But after Olympus started the OMD line, Pen cameras now seem too big to be cameras without EVFs. I much prefer the GM series from Panasonic. Now those are small and the GM5 even has an EVF (albeit a rather small one). The GM line is discontinued, but the company did sorta continue it through the GF line. I'm not sure why Olympus didn't follow a similar path of downsizing their Pen line.
    So, if given the same choice as Robin Wong presented in his video, I would go for the EM10 (I personally prefer the OM5 and OM1 though)

    My first mirrorless camera was a PEN E-PL1. I loved the results but needed a viewfinder so got the hotshoe mounted EVF. Another frustration was the need to go into the menu system to change aperture when shooting in Aperture Priority. So I bought a used E-M10 mk 1. This became my main camera for about 4 years but I replaced it with a used E-M1 mk 2. I still used the E-M10 though and realised that I did not always need the full feature set and weatherproofing of the E-M1 and ended up adding a used E-M10 mk 3 to my collection to be my travel camera. 🤷 😁

    7:44 Were the last two image sample segments maybe flipped? You talked about the E-PL10 first but then showed photos from the E-M10, and for the E-M10 you showed images from the E-PL after
    Regardless I have to say after watching many videos on m4/3 (especially yours) I decided to pick up a used GF1 to play around with and might get an E-M10 at some point (although I still have and will keep my FF cameras for everything else) but the m4/3 I feel has sort of re-energeized my love of photography since they are considerably smaller than my FF cameras, which have their advantages, but if I want a simple camera that's very compact and light that I can just grab and go, the m4/3 system has a lot of options, and the compatct (EVF-Less) cameras like the PL series are great for that (as are the ones with the EVF as well). But my point is they are compact, light, and make photography (especially things like street and travel) more enjoyable. Not that I don't like my FF cameras, as I love them, but not for everything (particularly when I want to travel light and have a compact/minimal setup). This is why I think adopting and possibly having different formats is beneficial. It lets you choose the camera system or format this is suitable for the needs at the time, and not be blindsided into "FF is the best out there. Period" or m4/3 is the way to go. It does depend, but being open to different systems and sensor formats and breaking your bias towards one brand or format will help you enjoy photography more -- as they say: the right tool for the job. Sometimes that's FF, sometimes it's not. I am probably more l ikely to use a m4/3 system for street photography for example than my FF cameras, because of their size and weight -- they are less intimidating to people (a FF camera looks like a professional camera, and the smaller cameras and systems tend to come across as more touristy, so you might be able to get away with more with a smaller "hobbyist" looking camera.

    I've used the E-PL8 and E-PL10 for street and like Robin says they take great images (and people often comment about how nice my camera looks -- hey, I don't mind that!). It's pretty easy to use a 1-dial camera even for manual shooting if you get used to it. However, ISO is a problem on the E-PL10 as it's not on the list of features you can assign to a button. My theory is that's an Olympus mistake; I think they copied the software directly from the E-M10, where it doesn't matter because the E-M10 has a dedicated ISO button. I think they forgot that the Pen doesn't. So on the E-PL10 you have to use the SCP to change ISO -- a minor pain.

    Having both the EPL10 and EM5 MIII, I often take the EPL10 when I don't need the viewfinder (EVF). So I use it with any lens with less reach than m43's 100mm. I find it handles portraits as good as the lens you put on it, so fine for weddings if you take a m43, fine for street, and fine for every day carry in the bag. It's mostly why I have it, without the viewfinder on top it just slips into my daily carry satchel bag. I also like the flippy screen simply flipping up when I need to kneel down for a lower shot, it's not as useful all round as the Em5 MIII's flippy screen, but for most shooting it is quicker. Also, 16 vs 20mp is just about negligible in real world. It might give a small advantage if cropping in a lot, but even then, very minor, I also noticed the 16mp sensor is very slightly, I mean very slightly, better in low light (per pixel) performance, but as you have less pixels it's the same performance in low light as the 20mp sensors.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому

      I'd argue that the 20MP image sensor in E-M5 Mark III has about one stop or more advantage when it comes to high ISO and dynamic range. It is quite evident when recovering shadows and highlight! The pixel count is negligible, but overall image quality, it is quite a step up!!

    • @MarchalisVan
      @MarchalisVan Рік тому

      @@robinwong True, as a separate issue from noise to noise comparison at a given exposure, there is a little more dynamic range in the Em5 miii over the EPL10, which may come up as small factor for some final images, depending on how it was exposed and what was wanted. But it requires a scene with strong light, and blacks dark enough to crush/clip via dynamic range, which let's face it, if it's that important, a new bigger full frame sensor might be more important for the shooter compared to the small difference between these 2 cameras :)

      The PEN F2 would be a challenger camera to the x100v or XE4 Fujifilm camera, but unless they put an advanced sensor inside, I will contend that the Lumix GX-9 is the PEN F2. What a great street shooter it is -- I know, I own one. 🤓 I do have the PL-8 and OMD EM 10 mkII which are fine as well. One problem with trying to sell any camera these days is that the current cameras, of the latest seven years, or so, are simply wonderful in rendering. Gone are the early years of leaps and bounds is sensor technology, and other advancements, such as autofocus. I still think Canon needs to bring back the Canonet rangefinder style, with the new sensor of the R10 = great! MFT and IBIS is all fine and dandy, but is there a future? All I know, at this moment in time MFT cameras and my Canon RP full-frame make me happy. This is all which matters. Is it producing as expected. I have never used a Ricoh GR camera, but it sounds interesting. The small batteries -- not many shots. This is or can be an issue on my GX-9, so I need to take an extra battery along, if the shoot is longer than an hour or so. Take care, and happy photography, Loren

    Hi Robin! As a GM1 owner, why would you leave home with the E-PL series for street/travel/edc? I struggle with E-PL series 'cause they're kinda heavy. The reason is that E-PL series does have a big advantage over Panasonic compact models, like GF7/8/9/10 (GX800/850/880) and GM1/5: In-Body Stabilization. So E-PL wins for better low-light performance- when using non-stabilized Olympus (most) lenses, non-stabilized Panasonic lenses (very few), or manual lenses. But....E-PL weigh almost 100g more, and that adds up! What makes you leave home with the E-PL instead?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому

      GM1 is quite poor when it comes to handling. Also, not having image stabilization, tilt screen, and the buttons being too cramped together, makes the E-PL series camera more fun and efficient to use. I like the GM1 for what it is - pushing boundaries of making cameras really small. But for practical reasons, E-PL series wins.

    Many people talking about the EPL9 but anyone should consider buying the EPL10 which is the firmware upgrade for the EPL9 which at this level unfortunately requires purchasing a new camera; the cheap kit gets little support after release so can be a dubious economy. The rollout of electronic shutter in all modes was a welcome addition in the 10 and the review industry who are little interested in affordable kit missed out on this on the whole and thought the 9 & 10 cameras were the same. Most blog reviews nowadays are about how good the camera is for blogging so Robin Wong is that rare breed an actual photographer. I would think either get the EPL8 for its full menus or the EPL10 for the electronic shutter and there is little point now with the EPL9 which was from Olympus imaging in its death throes telling everyone they were there for the duration whilst negotiating their exit.

    The only thing I dont like on my EPL-6 is that it only has one roller around OK key. If only that camera had rollers in front and back like PEN E-P5, it will be so much better. Even small XZ-2 or Stylus1s have at least that rotating ring around lens that works as 2nd roller.
