  • England’s John Smith typically shares a spotlight backing up other artists, including David Gray, Lianne La Havas, Joe Henry and Lisa Hannigan. When he came through Seattle, Washington, we couldn’t resist asking Smith to perform some of his own tunes, including this take of “Town to Town” on a 1947 Gibson LG-2. “Town to Town” appeared on Smith’s 2013 album, Great Lakes.

Late replies inc. says: Not long before John Martyn died, he did a tour of Solid Air. I'd been following him since about '78 so it was a must. I caught the show at Fairfield Halls, Croydon, a much bigger venue than his usual. I'd never heard of the support act, and the whole theatre was chatting away when John Smith walked on. He hit one ringing chord, slung the guitar 'round his back, and launched into a voice only song. Axe Mountain, I think. From that moment, the auditorium was silent. We lost John, but now we have John.

You guys shouldn’t do close ups on a performer’s face! A lot of your viewers are players and want to see what’s happening on the guitar. Close ups don’t add anything.
