"This song was actually written for Austin. Even though it was written in the sixties..." Truer words, Sir, were never before spoken. Austin absolutely slayed this song. I believe it was Tim who encouraged him to record it and he was not wrong!! Thank you once again for a fabulous reaction and analysis!

Yeah, I recall hearing Tim say somewhere that he'd basically wanted Austin to record this since Austin joined Home Free. But I think the timing, with Austin having gone through a heartbreak, a time of loneliness, and then finding the right woman, made this emotionally more powerful because he understood it deep down.

This is the best musical analysis of this performance that I've seen. A couple of really good vocal coaches have reviewed it but didn't go into the depth that you did on the background vocals. I'd love to see your analysis of how Home Free treat Brothers in Arms! I think it's better than the original, and it makes me cry every single time. Also Austin singing solo the song Bring Him Home from Les Misérables. Have tissues. It's powerful and emotional.

For sure, everyone is blown away by how strongly Austin comes in from the very first note. People’s jaws kind of drop because he’s already off to the races. And of course he never lets up for his entire lead vocal, propelling this to a stand-out rendition of a truly immortal song.

Austin was in the studio alone with the sound person and his lady Amberly. The others were each tucked away in a studio corner of their homes in Nashville, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. And they all sounded great in the sort of re-birth of a classic treasure of a song.

I'd say Austin got his point across, huh!?! Percy really put it out there and made the song "known". Bolton covered it in the 80's and everyone went haywire over it -- yes, it was very good where many thought it was an original. LOL -- Then here comes Austin -- says, Let me show ya this! Loved it! Be Safe

  • @dagmar.6954

Thanks for your analysis. Austin did a fabulous job of this classic song. Loved Percy Sledge's version, but this was taken to another level. I think it is also better than Michael Bolton's version. And remember this was done during quarantine, so the guys weren't even together. The backing harmonies are great, along with Tim's bass. And Adam's vocal percussion is outstanding. Drummers have often commented on just how realistic his sound is. This is why these guys are my favorite a cappella group.

Austin nailed it. He gives himself completely here and also plays very well with the cameras. The great harmonies, deep bass and the unbelievably freaking good beatboxing/vocal percussion/vocal sounds finish it all off for me. I absolutely love your analysis of all these videos!! For me, (even though I love all the vocal groups) I believe their arrangements and chosen chord structures are what makes HF stand out from all the other groups. My favorite songs of theirs regarding harmony and chord structures are: How Great Thou Art, Helplessly Hoping, Bless The Broken Road, Amazed, I Can't Outrun You, and Brother (although the funny and cute video may distract you from the amazing vocals), just to name a few. In How Great Thou Art, the ebb and flow they incorporate, their choices of dissonant notes, and Tim going all over the keyboard is just incredible. Thx so much for doing these.

Austin was in the studio in Nashville, while the rest of the guys were at their homes. Tim had been bugging Austin to do this for a while. rumor has it that Amberly (Austin’s lady from Stargazer Lilies Trilogy) was in the studio while Austin was singing, so Austin could sing to her.

I always loved the late Percy Sledge's original (not so much Michael Bolton's cover - I thought it rather over-wrought). The writer of the song had been through a bad break-up and Percy sings "I gave you everything I had". Austin's (now wife) Amberly was in the studio (that's who he's looking at) and he sings "I'll give you everything I've got". Great reaction!

I enjoy your reactions so much. Im a musician myself, i find myself once again finding more appreciation for a song watching you. You dont even have to say anything to even start off with...watching you, i know know exactly what your catching by those tiny little movements of your face, (an eyebrow lift here, a small cheek wrinkle there, etc) and head...you are obviously hearing the same thing that i am. Your breakdown of the music is so refreshing! I look forward to more of your video reactions!

Austin almost sang his face off in this one! What an amazing high range! Would love for you to check out some of their originals on their Dive Bar Saints album or their So Long Dixie album. Most songs on both albums are originals (some written/co-written by Tim or Austin or both or maybe with other artists). The title track of So Long Dixie even has a 6th person playing guitar beautifully. He’s a long time friend of Tim.

Great reaction, as usual. I'd love to see you react to Austin sing "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables. He really gets to show off his training. One of the best versions of the song I've ever heard. ❤️

This is one of my favorite HF songs. It's said that Austin had his lady Amberly in studio with him so he was singing for her. I was listening to "Come Along" by PTX the other day and thought you might like that one. It's not in the Avi era so maybe when you get to it.

They shouldn't have turned it down so much when Austin was hitting the high notes towards the end... 😢 That part is amazing 👏...They're Always Amazing, but still....I want to truly hear that part.

I do enjoy your analyses. With this song, particularly, it helped me to understand why I enjoy Home Free's version more than the Percy Sledge version I was dancing to in the late 1960s!

Sir Hairless Dude, we can always tell when you like something. Your facial expressions give you away. You can tell that you are looking for things to explain so you're concentrating on the words and music but the joy in your eyes and face tells us that you are really enjoying this. Also, like a previous commentor, I don't really understand music theory either but sure do enjoy listening to you explain it. LOL

You're right. It's Austin's song. 😄 He extends, lingers on, many of the notes beyond the original, which gives it even more emotion, I feel! Then took off up into the stratosphere there at the end, which reminded me, a little, of some of Dimash's 'Cherry On Top' ending's. But Dimash's kind of smack you in the face, with 'Wow!', whereas Austin"s just smoothly flowed up and back down so naturally, that our ears say; "Yup! That's how is should end."
    Good to shout out the Beat Boxer, they often don't get enough cred. The thing I love about these very excellent a capella groups is how individual ego's step aside to ensure each members' talent gets to Shine! 👋👋👋 { You are a very skilled teacher BTW Tailored to this viewer level, and Inviting those so inclined to deep dive and learn more about key compositional elements. }

I prefer this version to Michael Bolton's in every way. I always felt that Bolton was straining to get that high and it always made me uncomfortable to watch it. BUT Austin was built for it. No strain, no discomfort, just perfection! Excellent reaction, excellent breakdown and that quote about it being written for Austin is absolute truth! I know someone else mentioned it. Thanks!
