The MAIN Reason Camera Gear Matters

  • I explain the one main reason why your camera gear and photography equipment matters. And, no, it's got nothing to do with resolution, or stabilization or burst rates or global shutters.
It's down to inspiration. Some cameras simply make you feel more creative and excited just by using them. My Canon R5 is an amazing camera but it's boring and I've found myself increasingly looking towards my much older, less accomplished cameras. Meanwhile, I'm also looking towards cameras like the Hasselblad X2d which doesn't offer video skills but instead goes big on pristine image quality.
It's a very talk-y video today and I'd genuinely be interested in hearing feedback from other photographers on whether you think I'm at all correct in any of the nonsense I've been spouting here. Am I missing the thought or is it a good way of thinking about kit acquisition? Dive into the comments!

The subject matter that I shoot is what inspires me. But the reason why the gear is important at least in my perspective is that in order to achieve the vision that I have for a certain shot I need the proper tools that will allow me to get it.

Got to disagree with this. If you are inspired by the gear rather than the images then you are indulging in displacement activity. If you require new gear to get you out then you are on an expensive path with diminishing returns. Your lust for the Hasselblad will disappear faster than with your R5 after you get one after you realise it just takes pictures as well.

The gear is important to the photographer using it to achieve the end result. I enjoy the process of capturing my photos like anyone else but I won't disregard how important the kit I have is for me the specs, features and ergonomics are incredibly important. I just love picking up my current camera and going out to the woods. The solitude & creative process..

I am obsessed with vintage, weird, DIY lenses. Many of them give a very characteristic look you can't get any other way. Image quality isn't always the greatest, of course, but the way they capture the volume and light makes up for it

Think there’s a difference between going after the latest shiny object - which never ends, and getting a different piece of gear that might give a new or different experience and possibly produce creativity enhancements. Also, be careful getting rid of equipment just to get a new toy. Really sucks to have to re-acquire that piece that you look back on as having really been good for you.

I recently switch from a Canon 90D to a Fuji X-H2 system, I want to get more into Product photography and needed a different lens. Once I started to do a detail review, I realized the 90D, though a great camera, still on the DSLR world and the lens I wanted to buy was expensive, then another analysis hit my head, DSLR vs Mirrorless, my inclination to new tech started to kick in so I look at R5, to make the story short whether I buy a L lens for the 90D or replace it with an R5 and, let us say a 80mm lens, was going to cost me $$$$, which at this point I will have to justify based on my current income from my permanent job, needless to say I couldn't, so a happy medium for me was a X-H2 with a 80mm macro and a 56 mm which I believe (I am new, so I could be completely wrong) are more suitable for what I want to do at a much less expenditure.
I have to report that after a few wrinkles setting tether and getting use to menus I am happy and excited to start my journey.

Camera and gear never inspire me, but its the subject that inspires me. I love macro and when I find that mushroom or flower or whatever it is, that's the inspiration for my creativity.

The best gear is the gear you're least inconvenienced to carry. Less weight, fewer lenses, easier user interface, weather proof, etc. It's what allows you to focus on the experience you intend on capturing, rather than the fact that you're carrying around a massive burden of equipment.

Excellent video! I have worked my "hobby" itch up to a Sony A7r2 (by buying and selling used cameras and lenses for small profits), which pretty much does everything I wanted from a camera: 4k video, full frame and APSC lenses, IBIS, weather sealed, not too big and heavy... and yet, I long for a Lumix GM5 with some lightweight m43 lenses for every day carry... that would be my "fun" camera! ;)

Andrew, great video. The title of the video is absolutely supported by everything you spoke about. It makes one ask themselves when considering gear, how does this gear compliment or support what I want to achieve in making images, why would this gear be a positive addition and lastly, can I achieve my goal without this gear. I feel it's important especially for someone just getting into photography that's still exploring and looking for that type or style of photography that checks the box for them. Thanks for sharing.

I find myself having GAS too often unfortunately. Recently I read an article about this affliction, and it suggested going back through your pictures. identifying the ones that have meaning and memories, and then looking at the meta data to see what gear was being used. I was certainly amazed that I really only use two lenses, and a few filters. I also realized that I seem to have the most enjoyment looking and photographing the small things around us, some as macro, and some as close-ups. Now I am trying to spend more time really learning the two lenses I use the most, and am really enjoying this far more than shopping for new gear. Thanks for another great video.

I’ve had the same sorts of thoughts lately, but from a different angle: I just treated myself to a used Fuji XE-2, and on paper it was a completely frivolous purchase as I tend to use it with primes that are fairly similar focal lengths to the ones on my smartphone, and while the image quality’s probably a bit better on the fuji, it’s not by a *huge* amount.
So why not just save some money and use my phone? Because I hate the user-experience of it, the ergonomics are awful, and when I have it with me I rarely feel inspired to take photos. I’ve barely used it for photography, even though it’s clearly capable of it for basic fun images. But with the little old digital camera I feel inspired to take photos, I want to play. That difference is key.

Hi Andrew, do agree with you, I have seven canon camera which I use all of them.....An old rebel & 1d Mk2 to the R3 and in-between I find the it keeps my brain alive with all the different menus etc and the challenges of working with them all. I also use Photocrowd to inspire me what and how others are taking and using there cameras. Always looking for inspiration to take the perfect photo that I'll never get.... A great video Andrew thanx....Colin Devon.

This is something I have been dealing with for a while now, wanting to make the jump to a new system that I really think will get me out more and wanting to take more creative images.
I currently use a Canon RP, but have been thinking of making the jump to Fuji and getting the X-T5.
I hd a chance last year, but around the time I was looking to get the X-T5, I ended up getting a free lance job and instead invested in better Canon glass. My thought behind staying was 1 - This camera just got me a paid gig, so clearly it is working for me 2 - I was afraid of making the jump and end up being stuck with gear that I hate compared to having gear right now that I am just "meh" about.
I think about this often, I have done many instant quotes on what I can get for my gear and see how much I need to find to get a X-T5 and a few lenses to come close to what I have and use with my RP, money being another reason I have not made the jump.
This is such a 1st world problem, feel guilty for feeling this way, I should be more appreciative of what I have and the wonders of how good the camera are today and how good the images are that I am getting, but just not fully enjoying.

The process is what I like, not the gear. I'll walk the streets with an a5100 and a cheap 7artisans lens. And I'll hike with my A7RIV and my 24mm GM to get that landscape. It's all about the process of taking that photo, and 99 out of 100 end up in the bin. I'm happy with that. It's the process of capturing the photo, not the end result.

My Canon 100/2.8L IS USM macro lens is the lens that excites me the most and it is the lens I use ever since I bought it. Now when I decide to go take some pictures I am no longer wondering which lens should I attach. In fact this lens has been off the camera only once or twice.
I am writing all tjis in support of shat you said - whatever it is that excites you, makes you joyful and sparks enthusiasm is the right equipment for you. Use it and take your greatest pictures.

So true, I get a totally different feeling when I grab my 90D to wonder around the city shooting in every direction, unlike when using my R5 that I feel like I'm going to work. 😊

Investing in skills is much better value than investing in gear.
Best money I've spent on photography was an evening class at a local college.

I used to change cameras often but I'm now settled on a Nikon Z7 which will last me years to come. I am though, looking for that fun camera similar to my first serious kit back in the seventies, a Zeiss Ikon Contina. With this, everything was manual and I don't think it even had a battery. I don't want to go back to film though as it's too much of a faff. Specs wouldn't be important as it would be the experience that would thrill and inspire me. Loved this video, thank you.

Wise words Sensei. I am lucky enough to own an OM-1, Nikon Z7 both with good glass and Ricoh GR3x. I take a lot of images. Half of my keepers over the last year are with the Ricoh GR3x. The Ricoh does not even have a viewfinder. It is extremely compact, always on me, discrete and the image quality is excellent. I love the grain in the files at high ISO. Not the best technology but an inspiring camera to use. It does have good image stabilisation.

So very true. We all know someone who has a camera that they know 10% of its abilities, then end up missing a shot whilst looking for a different mode. Im so disappointed, I'm off to buy better waterproofs now instead of a R5 😢😢😢
