  • How to do a Compression Test & Leak Down Check on this Big Block Chevrolet Engine. In this UA-cam video see which test worked the best at diagnosing a 396 Chevrolet Big Block engine with a weak cylinder. I show you how to use a compression tester as well as a leak down test kit and common issues to look for in your diagnosis. Welcome to our UA-cam tutorial on how to perform a cylinder leak down test and compression test engine - perfect for beginners! In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process, enabling you to identify engine issues and ensure optimal performance.
First, we will delve into the cylinder leak down test. Discover how to systematically measure the amount of compressed air escaping from the combustion chamber and pinpoint potential leaks within the engine components. We'll explore the necessary tools, techniques, and precautions needed to conduct an accurate leak down test effectively.
Next up, we will cover the compression test engine procedure. Learn how to gauge the compression pressure of each cylinder, providing valuable insights into the overall health of your engine. We'll explain the tools required, the steps involved, and how to interpret the results to accurately diagnose potential problems.
Throughout this tutorial, we will emphasize essential tips and tricks, making it beginner-friendly and easy to understand. Our expert advice will ensure you gain a solid understanding of these tests, enabling you to perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot engine issues, and potentially save on costly repairs.
Stay tuned, take notes, and empower yourself with the knowledge to optimize your engine's performance. Knowledge is key, and we're here to provide it every step of the way. Get ready to elevate your automotive expertise with our comprehensive tutorial on cylinder leak down tests and compression tests for engines.
First, let's perform the compression test. Start by removing all the spark plugs from the engine. Then, attach a compression gauge to the first cylinder. Make sure the throttle is wide open, and crank the engine over for a few seconds. Take note of the maximum pressure displayed on the gauge. Repeat this process for each cylinder, recording the results.
Next, let's move on to the cylinder leak down test. Begin by setting the engine to top dead center. This can be done by using a crankshaft pulley tool or by rotating the engine manually. With the engine at TDC, remove the spark plug from the first cylinder and attach a leak down tester.
Next, adjust the pressure regulator on the leak down tester to the recommended pressure for your specific engine. Start by pressurizing the cylinder and listen for any air leaks. Then, check the gauge and note the percentage of leakage. Repeat this process for each cylinder, recording the results.
By comparing the compression test results with the leak down test results, you can identify if there are any issues with your engine. If you notice a significant drop in compression or excessive leakage, it may indicate problems such as worn piston rings, valve seals, or a blown head gasket.
Remember, these tests provide valuable information for diagnosing engine problems, but always consult a professional mechanic for a definitive diagnosis and repair.

Why was that valve seat so rough? It looked gouged up.

They’d replaced the seat and used a punch to stake it in. Then didn’t bother doing a valve seat angle 🤦‍♂️ It’s no wonder that cylinder was weak, right?!?! Much better now
