You should get paid by WOTC for this if you aren't already, no other set review I've found gets me more hyped for a set. Quick, clean, always nice to get the combo of limited and constructed comments too!
While I don't think there is quite enough to make an Elves deck work in standard, I am really excited to have a bunch of the premier elves in standard because it makes every new elf printed more exciting. Same goes for the other cool synergy cards like cats or goblins. What immediately excites me more is that Elvish Archdruid and Imperious Perfect are legal in pioneer for the first time, and that format has access to Collected Company which means Elves does probably have enough juice to be fringe playable (or at least be fun on arena ladder). Also I am excited to be back in a world where every green three drop gets the "But what if this comes down on turn 2" question.
I was there Gandalf, I remember Craw Wurm (and the 7/6 Scaled Wurm for 7G from Ice Age; I remember getting a copy with the MTG magazine Duelist when IA released).
I like how they are shaking up the draft archetypes a little. As you said at 3:30 there is a lot of cat tokens in white, but most gw payoffs seem to be counters-based. It's gonna be interesting.
The mythic wurm actually can *NOT* remove counters from your impending overlords; it has to remove the counters from creatures, and the overlords aren’t creatures when they have counters on them
I've always been adamant that a one mana dork should always be standard legal period. I started playing when mystic was legal back during m15 Khan's standard.
I like this version of Loot so much more than the 1st. He's kinda small and innocuous, with a good incremental advantage and huge butt. The 6 mana effect could whiff, but it's mostly a bonus on a 1/4 horn turtle/exploration.
I think there's a pretty strong FNM mono green elves deck for standard after Foundations. So many non-legendary anthem elves ... and can pack shaman/fierce empath and cram a few fatties like vaultborn just as a backup plan
Archdruid was still good in modern when Jund played a lot of removal. Mostly because of Collected Company and Chord though. Now it's looking like Genesis Wave is the thing elves will try to ramp into, but since it's sorcery speed it's much worse than CoCo.
Newer players might think it's strange of you to call Llanowar Elves the best card in the set, but it pretty much is. I remember dying to turn 2 Coursers of Kruphix and turn 2 Rabblemasters in og theros standard and it felt so gross. 😂 It feels even stronger in standard than other formats like pioneer because standard isn't made for this kind of tempo play. What I mean is that standard ramp creatures are almost aways 2 drops, so standard players aren't used to 3 drops nearly ending the game on turn 2. It's so fast it's basically like getting an extra turn sometimes.
Foundations will be legal for 5 years ... Llanowar Elves will not be. As risky cards go, better to ban the 10 cent common than the 60 dollar mythic that is ruining everything though.
Cackling Prowler feels black, from the ability to the art. They're going to have a hard time making meaningful mana dorks in new sets with Llanowar in the format.
They'll probably make most of them for limited play or 2 mana with upside. It would get silly if they reprint Birds of Paradise while Llanowar Elves are here.
Maybe, but 2-cost mana dorks also get better with Elves in the format. Since most of them still die to shock or cut down, having a target on turn 1 means the opponent won't have it for your turn 2.
Sylvan is not that bad. Its a way for green to acrue consistent value while avoiding sweepers. And i love vivian, but nissa competes with her heavily and feels stronger
Llanowar Elves is a trap for standard. You need 8 one mana dorks to be playable. We don't have 8 in standard. 4 of is not enough to make it reliable turn 1. Horrible draw later in the game. The other side of this is every deck is playing 1 mana removal.
I believe the Llanowar elves card is a big big BIG mistake for the format of standard. Now R&D department has to limit themselves on three drops of all colors that have one to two pips in their mana value for the rest of 5 YEARS. Which makes their job harder and more stressful. I'm not a fan of Foundations anyway but now I'm really not a fan.
@@theduckcompany I believe that R&D of magic does care and does well in the testing process but when Rosewater and/or is the lead on the project/set at the time says "do it like this or make it like that" they have to do it. If your boss tells you to do something at your job even if it's the wrong way you still listen because they the boss. It's not right but so it goes I guess. I believe modern would be alright if the bosses weren't so money hungry

U gotta watch "strictly better mtg"
Ooze and elf back. Going to be lot's of green floating around. Also don't forget turn 1 elf, turn 2 impend green overlord is pretty solid.
That's a Turn 3 Vivien Reed, right there.

I love that Llanowar Elves is back. Green needs the help and honestly we need our three-drops as fast as possible to fend off red one-drops
Sadly, unless your three drop is that 6/6 dino, its just gonna trade with the stupid ass mouse
FWIW Greatwurm cannot remove Overlord counters because the Overlords aren't creatures while they have time counters.
Good catch.
Awesome review. Wurm can't remove counters from overlords because they aren't creatures while they have impending counters. They are enchantments.
Thank you for all the hard work and great info...
Your set reviews are so good
I was there Gandalf, I remember Craw Wurm (and the 7/6 Scaled Wurm for 7G from Ice Age; I remember getting a copy with the MTG magazine Duelist when IA released).
as always, fantastic job with these set reviews
Happy to see the Ooze back. Always loved those squishy guys.

Green looks like an absolute blast this set. I’m so excited
Thanks for the hard work, Jim. Also, LLanowar Elves in Standard for 5 years, weird...
Genesis Wave + Elvish Archdruid + 3 tree city sounds fun
Mono green stompy. I miss steal leaf champion
Supporting the content
The alt art for preposterous proportions is phenomenal
Man, I wish green creatures could ever stay on the board. :(
The mythic wurm actually can *NOT* remove counters from your impending overlords; it has to remove the counters from creatures, and the overlords aren’t creatures when they have counters on them
Vivien is fantastic.
Craw Wurm was the top end of my very first deck 🥲
mine was the scaled wurm, 8 mana 7/6. Much worse, but I didn't understand back then.
@@mark_b2Scaled wurm has sick artwork tho

leave Loot's huge butt alone he ate a lot of candy over halloween ok its not his fault

Elf's might be really good 👍
set just dropped on draftsim so i am getting a ton of mock drafts under my belt before the release.
because the Overloards and really good enchantment/X things in the format I thought Rec sage would get a nod for something.
Is this set legal in all non rotating formats as well? Because Genesis Wave in Pioneer sounds really powerful.
FWIW, in Legacy the consensus has landed solidly on the side of Keen-Eyed Curator being superior to Scavenging Ooze since Bloomburrow released.
Turn one elves, turn two overlord of the hauntwoods. Ramp enjoyers are feasting!
@jimdavismtg any chance the elemental Hydra landfall three drop could make it into your LOLmentals decks?
Genesis Wave is getting printed into Pioneer where Nykthos is legal. Kind of a big deal. Is it better than Storm The Festival? Time will Tell.
Newer players might think it's strange of you to call Llanowar Elves the best card in the set, but it pretty much is. I remember dying to turn 2 Coursers of Kruphix and turn 2 Rabblemasters in og theros standard and it felt so gross. 😂

Imagine getting annihilated on the draw against t1 elf t2 overlord t3 roxanne t4 doppelgang.
@MetalHev I'm more scared of turn 2 Unstoppable Slasher personally. 😬
Elf back is huge
12 mana, cast both Overrun and Proportions!
Took me too long to realize the color reviews are released in wubrg...
❤❤❤❤
I def don’t remember Genesis wave being legal when shrine to nyx was legal . Wave is gonna be an insane standard card.. to much ramp not to be good
you actually can't remove the time counters because the overlords wouldn't yet be creatures
what is tipal? what happened to tribal
Which is the first elf lord from dominaria named? Couldn't seem to find it.
Leaf crowned visionary?
I want to play a mono green Timmy deck in standard
Hey Commander players a Scavenging Ooze reprint!

@@MainTopmastStaysail To be fair, there haven't really been meaningful mana dorks printed into the standard meta game for a while now
Comment for....... ..... wait a minute
You can pretend, but we all know the only card that matters is Land-Of-War
Welp at least green-based creature decks will be playable again in standard. Limited looks incredibly boring this set IMO.
Algorithm comment 5/x

Too much “coffee”
correction jim you cannot remove time counter from an overlord because while they have counters overlords are not creatures
