Has Chrysler improved the rocker bearing to prevent the failure, or are we making the repair with the same quality of rocker bearing that failed? Maybe it's not the bearing's fault, but a lack of adequate lubrication to the bearing. It would be nice to know the root cause of the problem and whether the problem is going to reoccur. If the issue has been fixed with a superior product, then replacement of all the rockers the first time in would make sense, otherwise your going to be opening the intake every 10,000 miles to address another rocker bearing failure.
as far as I'm aware the problem will happen again and again. as someone who works on a fleet of these things I've seen this failure across all vehicles with this engine. (ram truck, caravan, journey, jeep, promaster van) it's not a matter of if it will happen it's a matter or when it will happen
@@billgoatgarage Yeah...Very frustrating that auto manufacturers, or any manufacturers for that matter, don't address the real problem for a real solution, but would rather sell parts and service to remedy their poor initial design. It calls for 5w20 thats why the failure old-timers know if you run thin oil like that add stp oil treatment because it has zinc in it. Mazda rx8 called for thinner oil ...failure. Porsche callEd for thinner oil failure. Failure failure failure thin oil with no zinc equals engine failure. Excessive wear.
@@joejakab7670 I would disagree, from the looks of this engine under the valve covers, it appears the oil wasn't changed at regular recommended intervals. Look at those camshaft lobes, they look really bad. Todays modern engines are designed and built with tighter tolerances than yesterdays engines- that's where thinner oil is better- not so much for fuel economy, but for better lubrication between moving parts. Todays 5W20, and better-yet 0W20 synthetic oils are very stout oils, the key is changing the oil when recommended to. Most, if not all owners manuals will recommend NOT to add any oil additives-they thicken up when the oil is cold. I recently had a '14 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6, bought it with 25k miles and sold it with 55k miles- when I had it I changed the oil every 5k miles-as stated in the manual, used 0W20 synthetic in place of the recommended 5W20. Faster flow of oil when engine cold.Granted I sold it at 55k miles, but the engine ran whisper quiet, never had a problem. Synthetic oils, with the recommended weights and recommended change intervals- the way to go. This engine looks like it was abused.

But what you showed in the video is the exact sound and exact issue they described.. I am no where near being a mechanic.. Can anyone let me know if this is accurate ?
Any recommendation for brand of replacement rockers? Melling? Mopar? I've had this happen two times and wondering if one brand is better than the Mopar. I'm thinking of closing the circuit on the 2-stage oil pump so it stays in high pressure. It is ridiculous that so many of the 3.6's have this problem. Your the first person I've seen say anything about keeping metal away from the magnetic cam wheel. I'm sure I've had a metal screwdriver in and around that magnet before... Hope I didn't mess it up. I'll use plastic tools around that area this time.
I have only used mopar parts to replace these and have not tried any other options. I like the idea about keeping the oil pump high pressure the only concern I have is that you will set a engine light code.
Nothing unfortunately! It's faulty parts on the OEM engine. Rocker arms were shit and they knew it. Best just change them when you pull everything off.
you can change them all. or you can just change what's needed. I have done it both ways. and in my opinion even if you do change them all it can still happen again.

Here is a question for you is this a superseded part with better rollers or in 6 month I’m being funny will they go out again or next week will it be a different set so every few weeks have to be tearing this thing apart.
honestly it depends what the vehicle is used for. I'm sure the part is superseded but I still feel they fail. I have had good success with only replacing what needs to be done and 9 times out 10 works fine. but sometimes you need to open twice in a short period of time. hope this helps
Question tried this weekend on 14 jeep GC I could not get the one bad rocker out being towards front near chain it was too tight could I spin the engine to get the the flat part of cam lobe off the rocker making it free?
Seriously its easier to just remove the cam and replace all the lifters and rockers ... Only way I will warranty these is to replace all 12 lifter and rockers on that side or do all 24 lifters and rockers

Stopped ticking after a hundred miles or so and hasn't ticked since ! Over 110,000 miles now. Hope this helps someone !
Are you sure you didn’t damage the engine lol just joking man I wish I had the tools and was able to work on my car like that , by the way you didn’t replace the air intake manifold gaskets , will that damage the engine
they are reusable gaskets you do not have to replace them everytime. and this engine was already high mileage and had long oil change intervals. I only needed this engine to run for another 6 months I wasn't trying to make it last another 6 years lol welcome to fleet maintenance and repair
@@billgoatgarage so are you saying you didn’t changed the air intake manifold gaskets cause you only need the car for 6 months or cause they’re reusable? Lol I was getting parts to do my own tune up my charger is a 2014 so I wanted to change out those gaskets anyway so I asked him if they had the reusable gaskets and the gaskets he gave me were blueish and I had heard that some blue green gaskets are reusable, the parts guy at the dodge dealer told me those gaskets should be replaced anytime you take the air intake manifold off , he said if I put the cover on and needed to remove it again that moment is no problem but if I put the cover on and drove the car and then had to take the cover off again I’d have to replace those gaskets again , so Information I get seems to be conflicting and I’ve seen other guys reuse the gaskets
your local dodge stealership is just trying to sell you those. you honestly do not need to replace them because they are reusable. if you want to replace them well you are there go ahead. will your car break down on you if you don't replace them? no. I constantly open and close these engines and rarely replace gaskets. however one thing to consider is the vehicles I work on don't stop unless they are broken. so I honestly can't say what type of condition someone who only drives for a hour a day will look like.
A friend just had this repair done by the dealer under warranty, but was told to expect the same problem again withing 60,000 kilometers and the cost will be about $3,000.00 Canadian when it's out of warranty.

Did my 2015 grand Cherokee, 176,000 miles, went with Melling rockers, hoping they are slightly better than to OEM as they too will fail
Also there is a class action lawsuit on this engine
Question tried this weekend on 14 jeep GC I could not get the one bad rocker out being towards front near chain it was too tight could I spin the engine to get the the flat part of cam lobe off the rocker making it free?
yes you need to rotate the engine so the rocker comes free and is not under pressure from the cam lobe
@@billgoatgarage so spin crank with socket? Do I have to mark timing or anything?
yes spin engine by crank or bump the starter to get engine to move. just make sure you have all your bearing caps tight when moving the engine
@@billgoatgarage thank you!!
Great job! Thank you
Seriously its easier to just remove the cam and replace all the lifters and rockers ... Only way I will warranty these is to replace all 12 lifter and rockers on that side or do all 24 lifters and rockers
This repair P302 missfire?
Every time I listen to the beginning of the video, I laugh cause it almost sounded like you had it! My Jeep is doing the same and driving me batshit!
Thanks for one hand camera
Great video.
Why in the hay would you not change the others??? I get why you didn't change the cam shaft, but that isn't goat.
Why not replace the lifter as well ? collapsed lifter probable cause of rocker arm damage
What year and how many miles on that engine?
it was probably a 2014 roughly and it would have had 500000 miles on it. the engine in this video was very high mileage and wasn't taken care of as well as it should have been
@@billgoatgarage wow, 500k miles not kilometers right? I'm looking at buying a used 2016-18 grand cherokee limited and do some towing several times a year with travel trailer. I always maintain my vehicles. Best I can find right now price wise usually have 60k miles on them already.
sorry 500000k so like 300000 miles
@@billgoatgarage amazing actually. That helps me with my dessicion even more
Do you know the tork on the bearing caps
89 inch pounds
I have a 2015 caravan.. 118,000 miles. Cobleskill Chrysler N.Y. gave me a estimate of $5500. New cams, lifters , rockers ect.
Good grief Charlie Brown
How many miles on that engine?
probably 400000km or so
@@billgoatgarage Thanks, I just did mine in my 13' JGC @ 79,000 miles just as preventative.
My 2015 Grand Caravan is having the same ticking noise for a few months now. If not for the noise, are there other negative effects bad rocker arms can do to my engine if I leave it as is? Please advise
Yes. The rockers fail and damage the camshaft as he showed on his. Only a matter of time before it completely fails. This will at minimum require new cam or cams, or possibly seize up your engine.
If one or two are bad, why not replace all of the rockers? They are cheap and you already have the valve cover off.
what power to tighten the fight?
I have a cam shaft lobe that keeps wearing down. I replaced the shaft and it wore down within a month? Anyone know what causes rapid lobe wear?
did you replace the rockers at the time of replacing the cam?
Im watching the wrong video im going to replace all lifters rockers and cams.
I live in the Atlanta metro area..if u have any problems like this I'll come fix it..at a reasonable price
Seen several vids on this ,so how is the new rocker better than the old one,me ,I would replace all with something much better, last thing u wanna do is the same job numerous times, better to pay a lil more now instead of doing this a few times where cost & time would be crazy $$$$,or as I say do it right the 1st time
Why did it whine so much when it started
Will this cause all 3 cylinders in the bank to misfire?
If the camshaft lobes ate ground down. But doubtful.
Hey I recently changed my rocker arms from 2012 charger 3.6 and my car is on limp mode with no traction showing the code p0349 the camshaft sensor which I replaced. I’m not sure how to fix this problem. By any chance will you know ? Thanks in advance
did you put a magnet near the pickups? if so you may need to replace the camshaft now
@@billgoatgarage yes I used a magnet to take out a screw that fell. My mechanic is asking why is that a problem ?
Thank you for replying.
@@billgoatgarage by any chance do you know which camshaft I will have to replace ?
by the code p0349 it will be the bank 2 exhaust camshaft
good info.
did the tapping ever come back later after doing this?
Bro you dint see the huge gauge on the cam lobe ,huge wear on cam
i said the same thing... those cams are absolute toast. Heads likely as well since the cam journals are likely scored. I feel like this car is about to get sold to someone looking for a nice used car :-/
if you would have read other comments you would have realized this was the 2nd video I did showing one that was really bad. and that this was a fleet vehicle with high mileage that we only needed 6 months with and we got it
Cheap Chinese parts. I've had a 2016 Jeep JK since it was new. First 40,000 miles changed oil every 5000 miles and developed the tick. Mechanic tech told me to change oil every 3000 miles (no more) and to use 5W20 High Mileage oil and a half bottle of STP Oil Treatment every change.
How much does this repair cost to fix
Dodge dealership quoted me $2500 to replace all the rockers on one bank (12 rockers) & 1 exhaust cam
A friend just had this repair done by the dealer under warranty, but was told to expect the same problem again withing 60,000 kilometers and the cost will be about $3,000.00 Canadian when it's out of warranty.
Costed me $2400 including 1 cam
Obrigado
What about the shavings in the engine floating around? Not a very good fix!
this was more of a demonstration than a proper fix obviously. I needed 6 months of life out of that engine. and trust me I got it
Oil change after performing this fix.
You did this wrong. You should have removed the cams. It’s not that much more work.
Dude... those cam's are totally wiped. you need to replace the cams. Total waste of effort.
Me out shopping for a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. What do I find? Lots of JGCs but they all have this garbage engine. Two ton + SUV with a garbage little V6 for power. Best thing to say to the vermin (salespeople) who want to know why you don't want one of these wonderful Pentastar engines....is "tick, tick, tick". Most of these commission clowns don't know what a rocker arm is....just after some of your money for doing absolutely nothing for you. Thanks for the video. It has reinforced my decision to never even remotely consider this junk engine. Fiat right? Right.
Screwed up and minor are two different ends of the spectrum.
I hope you don’t do this when it’s a customers car 😂
This was definitely a fleet van that was close to death. We needed 6 months with it and we got it.
This was pretty funny
The victim is the person u dump it on.
I actually just did this yesterday where I live they want too much per rocker arm so I change them a couple at a time and stripping it down now goes pretty quick for me now
Hey! How long did it take you? I’m about to help a buddy do it and wondering if we should just attack the bad bank, or do them all.
...так ремонтують автомобіль тільки рукожопі в таких випадках вали теж потрібно міняти!!!!
6E is gone too....
good catch that's a previous repair. if you notice the rocker itself is newish
that aint a tick lol
Knockers. Ha ha
