Love the Buc! From the time when Great Britain could produce its own aircraft. Golden days.

I had the privilege, as an MOD photographer, of working on Farmborough and Boscombe Down’s Buccaneers on many occasions, beautiful aircraft. In fact, I think I might have taken the picture of the TIALD pod shown in the film.

To be correct, the RAF Boscombe Down was just an admin support unit. The base was run by RAE/DERA as the Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment (or informally A-squared E-Squared).
The revised nose on 272 for the GR1 trials was designed primarily to test the Ground Mapping Radar (GMR) and its interface with the Combined Radar and Projected Map Display (CRPMD). As I recall TFR trials were performed on the prototype GR1 as they had to take into account the aircraft control laws, which were quite different between the 2 types.
St Athan is pronounced with the 'a' as in 'Attic'.
The red, white and blue paint scheme wasn't camouflage, in fact quite the reverse, as it was chosen for high visibility.
I kept seeing 988, but no mention in the script. She spent her life mostly on weapons carriage and release trials, both at A2E2 and on deployment to the weapons range at West Freugh. Talking of which, the black and yellow blocked colour schem was designed for the kinetheodolite operators to be able to lock on to a specific point on the airframe to provide an accurate 3D track of aircraft position and velocity as it released its stores. Fun fact: the kinetheodolites at The Freugh were sourced from Peenemunde and still displayed Nazi swastika markings. When I was running trials there in the 1980s they were still good enough to locate an aircraft or bomb to the nearest foot.
Apart from that, who doesn't love seeing Buccs.

Good to see some of these stories being told - they were fun to fly. GEC Ferranti gave me a copy of their book about TIALD development on XV344 and deployment on Tornado. With the systems programmer at Farnborough at the time, we implemented a solid horizon line on the HUD (a la Mirage 2000) - just for fun :)

Lots of images of XW988 but no mention of her in the narration. Also Boscombe Down had the title A&AEE up until the late 90s (originally Aeroplane & Armament Experimental Establishment, then for a short while Aeroplane & Armament Evaluation Establishment). In modern times RAF Boscombe Down only refers the RAF admin unit not the entire airfield which is today known as MoD Boscombe Down.

Did not know XW988 even existed, should've looked closer at that landing shot!
