Unreal Tournament 3 was released in 2007 to much fan fair. However being a showcase for the Unreal Engine 3, it's high quality rendering, lighting, and physics effects was not a hit with long time UT fans. A tournament shooter lives and dies on its fast paced action. UT3 with it's muted tones and detailed textures made it difficult for players to do the one thing they came for, frag'ing other players. The game quickly lost popularity and most players returned to UT2004 and even UT99.
We fired up the game to create the footage for this OST playlist and see for ourselves. Our verdict is that the weapons are slow and unimpressive, the levels are drab, and the characters are easily lost in the scenery. The development team should have focused on making the game a shooter first, and a tech demo second. The soundtrack though is top notch
Alas all this would set the stage for UT's eventual downfall and replacement by Fortnight, and game that is clean, vibrant, bright, and with weapons that pack a punch. Oh well UT, it was fun while it lasted.
