one of the greatest perspectives I know in life is to go to a very old grave yard. You will see dates so old that everyone and anyone who ever knew them, whether they were common or famous are also dead. It gives one the wisdom that no matter what we do in this life, we will also be like these people. That the only thing we carry in life with us is our death. And that in the end, we are all equal when that time comes as it is our end.

It is entirely unreasonable and completely unrealistic to think that every human to have ever lived deserves eternal remembrance. Nations die, cultures die, communities die. These are dead bodies, not people. They don't care either way, if they're remembered or not. These corpse gardens are emotional masturbation for the living, nothing more.

I want to go there and do a complete land clearing and cleaning , cut down trees that are on the tombstones , pick up some fallen tombstones and pave the trail to the cemetery, use a type of ink that stands the test of time and trace the words on the tombstones to better read the names of the people who laid there . Would love to go around America and refurbish a lot of forgotten cemeteries as well! You are awesome Mobile instinct!

You started ut saying this cemetery was in Freehold. If you took Old Monmouth Lane to get to this old cemetery, there was my great grandparents (material) that used to own a farm and I remember as a kid my grandmother used to say you could walk thru the woods pass their farm and there was a cemetery there. Wonder if this was it.

Wanna talk about Forgotten Abe Lincoln history. My hometown of Monmouth Illinois held Lincoln Douglas debates. There's a plaque in town next to an abandoned lumber yard marking the spot Lincoln gave a speech. It's just kinda randomly sitting there. He even had his photograph taken downtown (which was a big deal at the time, of course) but in which building is a total mystery.

a lot of private cemetery maintenance falls by the wayside when the asset passes from one generation to another - sometimes by choice, sometimes simply because the inheritor has no funds to do the maintenance (either no trust was established for perpetual care, or there was a fund, but it was raided by prior generations).
Cemetery oversight is governed by each state seperately, so there is no regulatory standard and, in some states, no enforceability.
This cemetery ain't bad compared to others I've seen. Some of the most horrendous examples of neglect come when mausoleums are not cared for. At least in cemeteries the neglected are "6 feet under," in mausoleums their corpses suffer the direct indignities of time, weather and vandals, exposed for all to see.

Lincoln's, it gets complicated so here goes nothing. Samuel Lincoln (b. 1622) came to America via England to Massachusetts. He had a son named Mordecai (b 1657) Mordecai had a son named Mordecai Lincoln (b. 1686) whom married Hannah Salter in Freehold, NJ they moved to PA had a son John Lincoln (b.1716) He had a son named Abraham Lincoln (b.1744) He had a son named Thomas (b 1778). Thomas had a son named Abraham Lincoln (b. 1809)
The reason it gets complicated because there are about 5 Abrahams in the tree. 4 Mordecais, 5 Johns, 4 Thomas', in the span of 150 years. It's why so many people get things twisted like Daniel Boone being related, Robert E Lee etc. They are but it's distant in lineage. I am related to the same Mordecai as the President in 1686, as well as Daniel Boone, but after that it's further away. Plus, these people had like 12 kids a piece at the time shagging like rabbits to keep their farm up and running. Its further back through marriage, etc.
For example. I am directly related to an Abraham Lincoln but not direct to the Abraham born 1744 that is John's son, the Presidents Grandfather. This Abraham is one who was born in 1736 to Mordecai who is John's brother. He is the son of Mordecai of 1686. Abraham of 1736 married Ann Foulke Boone. Her father is James Boone. James Boone's brother is Squire Boone, the father of Daniel. So, you see it's intertwined but distant.

Hi. John's step-brother was the 1736 Abraham (born to Mordecai & his second wife). I believe Mordecai died before one of his children from his second wife was born. (Pres. Abe Lincoln's 3rd-great grandfather).

@@mattellemorgan2710 I'm not following. Samuel's son Mordecai (1657-1727) had son Mordecai (1686-1738) with Sarah Jones. Mordecai (1686-1738) had a son John (1716-1788) with Hannah Salter. John had son Abraham (1744-1786). Abraham had son Thomas. Thomas had son President Abraham Lincoln. What am I missing? Who was John's (1716-1788) step brother?

Nice video once again. It is sad how cemetery just disappeared.
Here is information you might find fascinating relating to this. There are rumors that a parking lot in the University of Utah campus was put on top of many grave stones due to the cemetery nearby, and that land seems to curse. Their are also rumors that native American graves were destroyed there. Lauren McCluskey supposedly got murdered on this parking lot. They also think this due to Ted Bundy enrollment in that school and the army base nearby.

Little known fact (possibly not even known by the inscribers of the epitaph in 1938) but it is never "ye", pronounced with a "y". It is always "the". The reason why people wrote it as "ye" was down to the old Anglo-Saxon letter thorn þ (pronounced "th"). When the printing press came out, they didn't make movable type for þ, as hardly anyone outside of England used it. So, they substituted the letter "y" in its place as it looks similar--at least the cursive forms of both letters look similar. And everyone knew how it was to be pronounced. And then they forgot, apart from certain pedants like myself. So, now we have "ye olde" this and "ye olde" that. lol
