"I thought you was a wise guy from way back." Hollywood thinks it can duplicate reality, now. It never could, and never will. That's what the old movie makers understood.
The trouble is that there are no more such good actors like Edward G.Robinson, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Thomas Gomez... The good old days are gone, and, I’m afraid, they won’t come back !!
In a movie filled with top actors, Bogie, Bacall, Barrymore and Trevor, EGR ran away with this movie. EGR and James Cagney in "White Heat" could've switched roles. Two small guys who could really fill the screen. Even physically huge guys like James Arness and Clint Walker couldn't fill the screen like EGR and Cagney.
TOOTS Played by Harry Lewis,Opened "Hamburger Hamlet" restaurant with his wife, Marilyn Lewis, in Hollywood in the late 1940s. It became famous and later expanded into an extremely successful chain. www.imdb.com/name/nm0507252/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm
In this scene is where Rocco is seen as a fearsome character. When toots begins to laugh, Rocco looks at him in a terrifying way. Rocco embodies how the mafia really is, where an unlucky laugh or inappropriate comment can be one's death sentence.
If today's film makers tried to remake this, they'd have 2 very large obstacles. You'd be hard pressed to find a replacement for Bogart, and you'd never find an equal to Robinson. Not worth doing.
John Rock head must have been a bad guy in his younger days because Edward G only had a mouth a gut and some low life chiseler to scare little girls and old men! Could you imagine him trying to scare the likes of a Clint Eastwood! 5'7" standing beside 6'4" Clint. Or 6'5" Stirling Hayden.
I love the communication between Clair Trevor and Lauren Bacall, just by looks. Excellent acting.
This is one of my favourite Edward G. Robinson scenes!!!.

Actors are terrified of being typecast, now, buy it didn't hurt Edward G. Robinson, or Bogart.
This movie is full of old school acting, and subtlety showing what tough means!
"Thousands of guys got guns-but there's only ONE Johnny Rocco."
great movie.johnny rocco good gangaster name

JOHNNY ROCCO: "What's worse, Curly? A dumbbell or a wise guy?" CURLY: "A wise guy, I guess."
I love those two quotes!!!.
GMTA
Forget Brando, the real godfather ( mr Big) is Edward g Robinson. The greatest boss in movie history.

Echoed later by Scorsese's famous "you think I'm funny?" Goodfellas scene.

I thought you was a wiseguy from WAY back.
My favorite expression!
Johnny Rocco was always business and no games.

They would either over act ,or be deadpanned !
Thomas Gonez (Curly) chewed that gum from the start of this movie to just about the end! Must be a record
