    Thanks for the helpful video, I appreciate it. All of your 7.3 videos have helped me learn so much about my own e99. Keep them coming..

    Every 7.3 from 99 to 2003 I've seen has the block heater on it. It came from the factory with zip ties holding it onto the wire loom in the front bumper. Look for the wire loom near the driver side fog light. There will be a regular 120 volt plug there. Grab an extension cord, plug her in and it'll start a lot easier.
    With all that being said, great video. If it's broke fix it.

      Yup. Block heater can be a life saver in really cold conditions.

    Great video. I replaced mine a couple years ago with a White Rogers GPR and haven’t had any issues; that being said I believe my original lasted 180k miles. The White Rogers are kind of a pain to install as they sit horizontal is the only issue I had. As always, great video!

      I did the white Rodger’s on my last ford. It worked great but was definitely a pain to install. I figured OEM was hood enough haha.

    good video,
    my MechMan 320A alternator does NOT suffer with low voltage after the engine starts, it goes to 14.8 volts NOW.... it carries the glow plugs handily.
    I always count to 45 or more after the WTS light goes off, I do NOT want the 14.8 volts applied to the Glow Plugs for a long time.

    I have a White Rodgers relay as a spare on the shelf. For those who live were it gets cold in the winter switch to 5w40 diesel oil helps alot trying to start your engine if you can't plug it in. Also before it gets cold out try Hotshot Secret Siction Eliminator in the oil. If you haven't used that product or anything similar use the bottle for 32 quarts of oil. Also Hotshot Secret EDT + Winter Defense will help keep your diesel fuel from gelling and provide much needed lube.

    A great reminder…I need to confirm that’s my hard start issue with my 7.3… but I’m fairly confident it is. I really am glad your back with the 7.3 content…keep it coming!
    BTW…the only glow plug relay I found on riffraff was an international part. Do you have a part # for the motorcraft part at riffraff by chance?

      @LivingOnWheels  9 місяців тому +1

      The one I got from them was international as well. I feel comfortable with that as well as the motorcraft one.

      I love mine use it all the time not only on my 7.3. Just so you know there is one that you can get that will lift your legs up so you are flat also and you use a hand control to lift and lower your legs. I wanted that one myself however it didn’t seem like at good idea for husky sized people like myself lol.

    Mine starts up almost exactly the same, this is something I'll have to check. The weird thing about mine is that it it's not just cold, there seems to also be a dependence on how long it has sat, like something hydraulic is losing prime. I can drive somewhere, leave it parked for 8 hours, and it starts right up despite being barely above ambient, but if it sits a day or so and the startup is exactly the same with the white smoke (smells like diesel) and 30 sec to a minute of rough running. After that it runs perfect. I suspect something related to injectors as well as a possible glow plug issue, and plan on replacing all 8, and doing the cups and plugs at the same time. Truck has 400k on it so it seems likely the injector O-rings are probably starting to leak, and the injectors themselves are clacky af so I suspect they're pretty worn out even if they were changed at ~200k.

    • @LivingOnWheels
      @LivingOnWheels  9 місяців тому +1

      With that kind of mileage I would lean towards worn out injectors. Doesn’t hurt to ensure the plugs are working properly though.

      @@LivingOnWheels Yeah I think I'm just going to load the parts cannon because it's all wear items and looking at all the stuff I have to take off just to get the valve covers off I'd rather not have to go in there more than necessary.

      Try Hotshot Secret Siction Eliminator on your next oil change and use 5w40 engine oil.

      @@cucvfarmer I've heard enough people mention Hotshot in the context of 7.3s that I'm planning on trying it when I do the next oil change, may switch to the thinner oil in the winter too since it gets into the negatives where I live fairly frequently.

      White Roger’s is a good option. I had it on my last 7.3. Just don’t like how bulky it is in there.

  • @chrisallen3741

    I replaced both my relays under the hood and the one on the fender. It was in the 30´s and when it started it shook pretty good and did a rough rumble for like 3 or 4 rotations….not sure what that was all about. Once i plugged in the heater that went away. So, im going to change the oil just Incase it wasn’t done. I’m not the original owner. It was my father in laws truck and my brother in law wasn’t known to take care of things. I guess after i do the oil I’ll have to look at the glow plugs

    • @LivingOnWheels
      @LivingOnWheels  8 місяців тому

      My guess is you probably have a few glow plugs that are bad.

      If some of the cylinders aren’t really firing because of bad glow plugs it will do that.

  • @alsaku33

    People need to understand there is a critical point of the GPR system working…and it’s the PCM ground signal coming directly from the PCM to therefore “close” the relay and send power to the glow plugs via the other large post on the GPR.
    You can have 12v koeo signal power present at the GPR and STILL have the glow plugs not receiving 12v.
    One small post on the GPR is 12v koeo signal as you said, the other small post is the PCM ground signal.
    Sometimes you have to replace the PCM to get the glow plugs to work if you want to keep it working like the factory setup, But before you replace the PCM though, you need to test continuity of the PCM ground signal wire all the way back to the main PCM harness plug in the firewall. That includes through the main engine harness plug on top of the drivers side valve cover.
    If you don’t want to replace the PCM, you can simply wire in a momentary switch in the cab and then you can manually energize the glow plugs whenever you want.

    • @LivingOnWheels
      @LivingOnWheels  9 місяців тому

      Ive never heard of the PCM failing int his way on these trucks but good information none the less. Thanks!

    • @alsaku33
      @alsaku33 9 місяців тому

      It happens quite a lot. The forums are littered with threads about this problem. Most people just bypass the PCM and wire in a momentary switch. The second small post on the GPR is the most important for the system to work.@@LivingOnWheels

    Just wondering if Your glow plug dash light came on as normal? like comes on for a few seconds and then goes out then your clear to crank. Good hack to jump the relay if it doesn't start! another thing my truck just started getting 15 mpg, I usually get between 18 to 19 mpg, I hope its just a bad tank of diesel.

    • @LivingOnWheels
      @LivingOnWheels  9 місяців тому +1

      Yep, the WTS light comes on like usual. Its not actually tied to the glow plugs or relay. Its honestly more of a dummy light. Depending on how cold your area gets, the stations might have switched to winter diesel which usually gets a little less mpg. That and longer warm up times now that weather is colder.
