It's sad but accurate. When a child accepts someone as mother even if they are abusive or dangrouse it's unlikely they abandon them on their own choice.
The ending scene, especially when Lily's laughing and touching Mama's face while they embrace during the fall, always broke me everytime. It goes to show how much Lily loves Mama, no matter what she is. Lily didnt understand what was going on, other than the fact that she's happy because she is with Mama. But to us, the audience, we know what will happen, and for me that is heart-breaking... Still, I agree with the director that that is the only ending they could think of that fit their vision of the story. Who am I to say otherwise... Now, I just need to ease this emotional roller coaster from watching the movie...
@@filmcomicsexplained Can you add and explained the world about "The Golden Compass" and the new reboot on HBO new TV series "His Dark Materials"? Its truly fascinating and to be honest haven't read the book.
This is my favorite kind of ending, the one that is driven by the in-universe logic instead of narrative tropes and the concept of Happy endings being a must.
Honestly? I was terrified of the ghost originally then felt so bad for her. Then bawled my eyes out at the bittersweet ending. Del Toro swings a home run with this movie
I was watching Shrek and Shrek 2 for the past few months. After watching them so much, I picked up a few things that I totally missed as a kid. There is alot of adult jokes in these movies and you could only pick them up if you pay attention to what they say. Yes what they say sometimes are innocent lines, but they also mean something else.
The Mama entity is a really interesting movie monster. She's scary as hell, but really she's not evil. Her actions are all based in her desire to protect the girls, even if she's misguided
I didn't mind the ending, because it wasn't that much of a shock considering how far gone Lily was. And you saw how much she genuinely loved Mama and saw her as just a mother and nothing else. I felt bad for Victoria though, having to lose her little sister.
So you're happy for the confused four year old who died and never got to live a future full of potential, And the reason why she was murdered is because of mamas mentally unstable jealousy(basically, if she can't have them, no one can), but sad for the one who was aware enough to know how good she had it LIVING with two people in a nice house and at this point, has her own bedroom?
I convinced my dad to take me to this movie when it was in cinemas by telling him it was a sad drama movie. He just slowly turned his head to me in shock when the first scary scene came up haha
I always felt that the reason she removed her glasses before seeing Mama was not because she didn't want to see her clearly but because Mama would never approve of them and would get jealous that her human family was trying to help her see better. Just my opinion though.
Fair enough I do believe in the beginning of the movie, the father had ordered his daughter to take off Her glasses so she couldn’t see him kill her clearly. Mama got him before he could pull the trigger The parents weren’t “tragically lost. “ The father killed the mother and was planning on killing the little girls
It's actually pretty easy to understand why horror movies revolving around children scare us so much; when most of us humans encounter children, our first instinct is to protect and nurture them; if we encounter something that threatens a child's safety, our instinct is to protect them at all costs; if said threat is something that we do not understand, we begin to feel helpless and desperate to protect the child; and when we find ourselves in a situation where the child IS the threat, we become torn between our own survival and the child's.
I liked Mama as an antagonist, because you can empathise with her motivation, and fear her for her powers and implacable nature. Also the creature effects were wonderfully creepy.
This is truly one of the greatest horror movies of all time when it comes to theme. There is a real and bittersweet lesson of vertue for almost all main characters, yet all end up as they should be.

She's played by one of my favorite actors, Javier Botet. You should check him out! He did a lot of practice for her movements, and he truly *is* that tall and lanky.
So a wraith like, quasi vengeful ghost, that's actually NOT evil nor malicious just confused, and probably somewhat angry over the loss of both her life an child. This family here could have a guardian spirit if all parties could learn to make peace and somehow coexist. itd be a twist we haven't seen done yet between spirits like "mama" and groups of humans like this family
My entomologist father would scorn me for not pointing out that the black butterflies you mention as the sign of Mama are actually moths. The feather-like antennae are the giveaway, along with their resting wing position. They are symbolically significant too. A symbol of determination and/or death fit Mama as a symbol more than a butterfly would.
I loved the movie and loved the ending. It was poetic and logical if you can find logic in a ghost story. The youngest was attached to the Mama and that was a happy ending regarding her story arc. While not an masterpiece this movie was highly underrated...

When I first watched the film, I was left scared and mind blown, and it was the first movie that introduced me to paranormal horror films that came after. And now hearing what information I never knew about it, makes me wish the directors made another film like it, but more terrifying.
I can't help but think about the aftermath of the movie whenever it comes up. The aunt is dead and one of the kids is missing again. How are they supposed to explain that without getting arrested or having the other kid taken away? They can't very well say a ghost did it.
The aunt went mental and abducted the children in a fit of rage and jumped off the cliff with the youngest before the couple could save her. All wrapped up!
I kind of thought the reason why Victoria took off her glasses when she was Mama was because Mama didn’t let her wear them, cause the scene where she saw her with her glasses she took them off her and broke them 🤔
Another disagreement: I don’t believe those are black butterflies 🦋. I believe that those are moths. Moths are attributed to death 💀 and were associated with vampires or ghosts 👻 in folklore.
Fun fact the girl who plays the girlfriend in mama is actually an IT chapter two as one of the adults. The brother and sister Duo director liked her so much that they brought her back for that movie, as well as the young actress asking for her to play the older version of herself.
I'm not much of a horror movie fan but the concept of this film was completely unique. For whatever reason I really enjoyed this movie. It's a "must watch!"
I actually really liked the ending. I thought it made sense for Lily to go with mama. Because that's where she wanted to be, and she was never going to have a normal life if she stayed.. but it was apparent that Victoria could, and that's what she really wanted. So I was happy with the ending, because it seemed like everyone got what they wanted, and everything ultimately worked out for the best
Whenever I think of ghosts, I think of an entity that is being denied the peace of death and is trapped in eternal suffering. Everyone around them is terrified and shuns them. I want to help them. I want to face the terror they exude in their anger and frustration and show them that I am not afraid, and that I want to help them. I just don’t understand why mama wasn’t satisfied with her own baby when she was finally reunited? Why kill Lily too? That ending still has me messed up. I cry every single time. But I am a mother of three girls. And of course one of their names is Lilly.

At the time I saw this film, I was pretty immature in the way I perceived movies. I often forget this movie exists, but I recall thinking Mama herself was creepy in all my favorite ways (body horror and fast crawling scares me more than anything in horror movies) but underutilized, and that the plot wasn't all that interesting. Chances are I went into this one expecting a bombardment of visual scares, which I've come to learn, with much help from the Babadook, (another one which initially left me cold for the same reasons) is a bad way to go into a horror movie. I imagine if I saw Mama now I would feel very differently, and would better appreciate the effort put into it. I certainly feel differently about the Babadook now than I did upon first viewing. (Your video on that one was wonderful, btw.) Anyway, great the video, man. Made me reflect on how I've matured. Feels good.
MAMA was an outstanding movie. Superb acting by the leads and the children. Mama was terrifying but you also begin to sympathize with her and by the end you can completely understand her attachment to the children. But being robbed and harmed as she was when she was alive has caused her to be filled with anger, jealousy and hate. Its a totally underrated horror movie.
I loved this movie but it scared the willies out of me so much that even today if I'm in the shower and I think about it, I can't close my eyes because I'm afraid that I'll see Mama standing there when I open them again. No other horror movie has ever done that to me.
This was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. It was of my first horror movies. And the way she moved and how she looked gave me nightmares for week's.
I agree that butterflies have different meanings in different countries. Although, the movie poster shows butterflies, what was mostly shown in some scenes of the movie were actually moths.

(Your video on that one was wonderful, btw.)
Anyway, great the video, man. Made me reflect on how I've matured. Feels good.
Mama would be much scarier if they didn't use CGI
Absolutely perfect description/explanation of a great film. Good job
Man Lilly had to mess everything up at the end there. If she only had kept quiet Mama could have jumped off the cliff with her real child.
i honestly thought this was just another dumb horror movie, but it's actually really good. the concept and idea even works outside of the horror genre
S/O our boy NIAT Great Informative videos mane!!! 🥳🥳🥳
The Darkknight some visuals could have been better. But otherwise it was incredible
I loved this movie but it scared the willies out of me so much that even today if I'm in the shower and I think about it, I can't close my eyes because I'm afraid that I'll see Mama standing there when I open them again. No other horror movie has ever done that to me.
My favorite part was when the children are found and they creepily crawl on to the counter or table
This was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. It was of my first horror movies. And the way she moved and how she looked gave me nightmares for week's.
@FilmedComicsExplained this is one of my favorite movies 🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏🤗👍
I agree that butterflies have different meanings in different countries. Although, the movie poster shows butterflies, what was mostly shown in some scenes of the movie were actually moths.
Bro don’t scare with that first bit like I seriously almost had a heart attack
hii myself bandyamama i love watching movies and give my reviews on them
saw this movie many times great storyline the character of Mama was not like the other negative ghost character as shown in other movies she never hurts both the kids infact loved and cared for them like her own kid. Good story content really loved this movie. in the end instead of horror i just got emotional by seeing the climax great acting done by all the cast especially both the kids and mama
I would love it if you explore
"The Ruins"
You make amazing videos.
Wow! This looks so good!
This was so good brother! Great Job!
I must watch this! This video scared the crap out of me. The movie must be pretty good.
Wow your a night owl like me - it's 3am here in Aust lol :p I suppose it makes sense as it's day in the USA though!
I would love a playlist on The Golden Compass and other beloved novels of our childhood that are now movies.
For me, this film is tied with The Grudge for being the freakiest horror I’ve ever seen. It evokes a true and growing sense of dread throughout, and the finale was perfectly heartbreaking.
Okay before you talk me into liking this movie o saw this when I was a teenager and thought it was hysterical. Especially the hair on the floor part. Alright, on with the show.
*erie unsettling silent scene in Mama*.... and then "TODAY WE'RE CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE!"
When I first watch it when it came out on dvd, I cried so much at the end
I remember watching this in UA-cam. "All Mama's Sighting"
My daughter told me to watch this movie like 10 years ago and this was trust me the last scary movie that I ever saw 😅
How do you do it man? The most well thought out, well put together videos on UA-cam. I'll always support you as long as you keep putting out such great content
Underrated channel deserves way more views and subs
