- Music from the First Battle of Deep Space 9, when the klingon flagship and fleet attack the station.
Composed by Dennis McCarthy
Episode: S4E01 Way of the Warrior
I met Dennis McCarthy the other night, he conducted the orchestra, I was so thrilled to have chatted with him for a few minutes. All this music is so strong.
Did he say something about writing this theme? I am a musician myself therefore... :)
@@janvirtanen6199 I used to be trumpet player in the Nevada, Iowa Middle School Band!
GIVES ME THE CHILLS!
But what was weird, was that there was no orchestra. And it wasn't at night. And you didn't meet him.
This was one of the best scenes in DS9 up to that point. Chancellor Gawron laughs in Sisko's face, Sisko smirks and Deep Space Nine suddenly sprouts phasers and photon torpedo launchers from literally fragging everywhere!
*Gowron
@@saberiandream316 you had to ... nerd
I was absolutely floored by this as a teenager - this space battle was in a completely different league to anything Trek had done before. Not even the FILMS got close.
It was more hardcore and violent. It was true to showing what war in space was like.
@@robjackson5245 yeah it was just like in real life.
Consider what you do here, Gowron! Kahless himself said, "Destroying an empire to win a battle is no victory!"
"And ending a battle to save an empire is no defeat."
WE CAN STILL WIN!
"And losing a battle to save an empire is no defeat."
@@michaelloftus565 "Enough! Cease fire, and order our ships to halt their attack. I do not intend to hand victory to the Dominion! "
@@michaelloftus565 should have been a clue to martok being a changling, being unmoved by the wisdom of Kahless
I guess i was too distracted by all the pretty explosions while watching the episode to notice how epic this music is. Thanks for uploading it!
"Your boarding parties are contained! and my reinforcements are closer than yours. so what should I tell them? to stand down! or to come in firing!!?"
"It is we who shall stand down."

FUCKING LOVING that EXPRESSION !! BUT I LOVE MORE = GUL DUKAT & WEYOUN !!! Dominion BATTLE !!!
And ow yes = GUL DUKAT is Right = BURN THAT BITCH !!!!! I CAN'T STAND HER !! SHE IS WORSE, THAN DUKAT !!! I HATE HER FACE !!!
FAKE BAJORAN SO CALLED PRIEST !!!
"You're facing a war on two fronts, is that what you _really_ want?"
The Royal Navy would like to know where it can buy 5000 Photon Torpedoes XD
One of the rare instances in the post-Jones Rick Berman approved generic danger "music is sonic wallpaper" era that the music _stands out._ I think this is a good illustration on WHY you need to let the composers off the leash.
"INTENSIFY FORWARD FIREPOWER!!!"
"TOO LATE!!!"
Dr who and star wars on a star trek vid. My my we have a great tonighr

@@fabianzimmermann5495 Ha! I was LITERALLY gonna say JUST THAT! XD
Notice it's similar to Star Trek Generations at the beginning
Not just in the beginning, there are various bits recycled from the Track "Outgunned"
Same composer that's why
Also similar to "The Die is Cast", also composed by Dennis McCarthy.
@@michaelloftus565 pretty much identical
Also similar to Generations crash scene.
DS9 reckt the Klingon Fleet on that episode...
And the klingon Boarding Partys too
Eh the Klingons still got some major hits on ds9 and I would say were much more damaging initially than the dominion assault. Ds9 was just able to destroy more of the Klingons and the dominion just had more ships. And I do believe that is the only reason ds9 fell in that battle. Had the dominion not been so big they would've been forced to retreat
Deep Space Nine: from a near lifeless hulk in Emissary that couldn't stand up to 3 Cardassian ships. Fast forward to Way Of The Warrior....a thriving community inside a nearly impenetrable fortress, with a crew that gave some of the mightiest warriors in the Klingon Empire a fight they soon wouldn't forget.
As much as I love ds9 all I can pictures in the enterprise D getting wrecked
This music goes with the scene perfectly and for me the best Star Trek tv series
I've GOT 5000 TORPEDO'S TO LAUNCH !!! My REINFORCEMENTS ARE CLOSER, Than yours !!!!
DO YOU REALLY want A BATTLE ON TWO FRONTS ?? What should I tell the CAPTAINS ?
YOU STAND-DOWN ??? OR I order them = TO OPEN FIRE !!!!
STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE = AMAZING !!! So many people with their FISTS, behind theire TV !!! hahhaha // SISKO did a GREAT JOB !!!
Funny how this is the EXACT same music that was used when the Obsidian Order and the Tal'shiar attacked the Founders...and say what you will, McCarthy can be real good when he was allowed to be. I'm looking at YOU, Rick Berman!
Yeah, McCarthy really reused a lot of the Battle-Cue from "The Die is Cast" here, but still... I know he gets some flak for his music being too unnoticable, but first off it wasnt his fault, and second, he really did the best he could considering the restraints put on him: His suspense music is suitably eerie and his Action-Cues can be really stirring. I always found his music to be far more dynamic than what Jay Chattaway wrote during the same period.
It's not the same actually, I've listened to them both one after another and there's pretty key differences. Same sort of instruments though.
Actually, Rick just wanted music that didn't distract the viewer from the dialogue, and just gave those instructions to the post-production supervisor (Peter Lauritson-TNG seasons 1-4, Wendy Neuss TNG seasons 5-7). During season 1 to 4 Dennis' music is perfect; dense, complex music that enhances the story without distracting you from it, unlike Ron Jones' music (just listin to the obnoxious music that plays during Lore and Worf's fight in the turbolift in "Datalore"), which is over-synthed and over-the-top that utterly screams "LOOK AT ME". When Wendy Neuss took over at the beginning of season 5, she misunderstood Rick's orders and began asking Dennis and Jay Chattaway to remove their themes, unique orchestration, and everything else creative about their music. Resulting in a very bland, uninteresting approach from Dennis, while Jay began experimenting to find a way around Neuss' new restrictions' (which he accomplished later in season 5, creating a plush, heavily counterpointed style with hidden themes he kept until his last episode of that series). That's why DS9's music is better, because Neuss never worked on DS9, and the end result was music more like the first four seasons of TNG. I found this out by reading an interview with Lucas Kendall in The Fifty-year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek; The Next 25 Years. So Alexander Rios, next time you insult someone, do your homework first. Blame Neuss not Berman (who Dennis McCarthy was good friends with). Live Long and Prosper.
Hell yes, it's one of the rare times in the generic Rick Berman stamped sonic wallpaper era that the music does its job and STANDS OUT.
@@kuribayashi84 I disagree, Jay Chattaway was more UPN/Warner Bros./WB flagship, and he also stirred dread up during the Borg pre-"FC" era. There was always a sense of doom that the Borg would come back stronger. When the Borg ended their era of fear starting with "First Contact," they still managed to be creepy. His work on "DS9" and "Voyager" was creepy. Dave Bell took some Jay Chattaway cues but made it better. His work on "Voyager" ushered in a new era of threat post-Chattaway. Let's not forget Chattaway composed "Invasion USA" giving him hard credibility as a composer.
I like seeing 0:21 is the most replayed part, i always thought that part was awesome to listen to over and over
I never noticed it before but if you listen carefully, at around 2:36 , you can hear that there is a clarinet (or a flute, I'm not sure), that is a little too early. Makes me wonder if they noticed it and if they decided to keep it in because it would have been too difficult to do another recording of the audio mix.
Dennis McCarthy was all McCarthy'd out by this point I think. Plenty of re-used themes in this, Generations and The Die is Cast. Felt for him. must've been exhausting
Much of the music is taken from Star Trek Generations when the Duras sisters attack the Enterprise.
His name? Space cop.
Yo this had more testasarone than the scenes themselves. Damn this one sounds violent. Son... "DS9" and "Voyager," son. UPN/Warner Bros./WB flagship. The WB couldn't stomp this. "TNG" was beastin all 3 of tha era were on some next level of classik, son.
Ah, my childhood.
thats my beating traffic music at the morning
I think earlier "DS9" is underrated. I prefer this over the Dominion War scores. This had that optimism about it. Studio-produced beast shit. Real talk.
Anyone else here after Wolf 359?
The one by JTVFX? Hell yeah :)
"Melbourne to attack wing 3: Fire at will!"
I just realized there a bit that sound similar to one from Enterprise Twilight battle music. it at 1:10.
Pure McCarthy sound
Two years latter, the Federation and the Klingons were fighting side by side against the Dominion and the Cardassians ! Politics can change in a hurry.
Helps that they were only fighting due to manipulation from the Founders. Klingons don't like being puppets.
He reused lots of stuff from his "Generations" OST.
FIRE
The Klingons were treated as a nuissance in this episode rather than a threat. The Cardassians are still more advanced than the Romulans, Klingons and Federation.
Where was this soundtrack released? I can't find it in the La La Land releases
nvm found it, in The Best of Star Trek: Volume Two

It's a nice piece of music, but I really wish the more generic orchestra hadn't come to be the standard. I think the musical choices actually started to HURT Trek.
Imagine this attack with the KLINGON theme at least being alluded to?
