Troubleshooting a Varex Muffler - Fancy Exhaust Cut Out

  • Today we investigate the Varex muffler, a patented design which affords the user the opportunity to bypass the chambers of the muffler in favour of a straight thru design.
Unfortunately I lost some of the footage of the testing/troubleshooting the system electrically. The fault lies within the control module, which will be replaced by a hard wired switch rather rather a wireless remote/module in a future video.

My second cars varex kept blowing fuses until I hard-wired it in.

No worries, I ended up using a bipolar switch to hardwire it in.

@@GapSauceUA-cam just need clarification, you turned the valve cog wheel counter clockwise to open the valve correct?

@@drsnowmon I can't actually remember sorry mate, you can see the valve from the rear of the muffler.

Hey mate I had a varex and was told by my reseller that the remotes are junk.
They hardwired it in, and then hard wired a switch in my car under the dash/steeringwheel area.
IIRC you'll need a 3-way switch (like a window switch, up-neutral-down) .... prob also need abit of electrical magic like a relay as well.

Thats exactly my plan, but that's for another video. The remotes are working, I found a blown fuse and the control module is unresponsive. I'd hardware any future system in, I've seen alot fail now.

Varex on my VF ssv has failed after 2 weeks. Top notch lol. Was a cool feature until it’s failed in the closed position. Likely the controller as both mufflers are not opening

I've had trouble too since. Even after hard wiring it in, which I believe is necessary. I think allowing the car to return to idle before attempting to open/close it helps.
If you pull the cig lighter adaptor end cap off, there is a small fuse in there.

Any suggestions or tips you can offer when installing a replacement motor? Is there a certain position the valve should be etc?

I run racecraft E-boxes personally, way better in terms of flow as it exits around the valve when closed in a 2 1/4' pipe as opposed to the tiny holes the varex pushes it through, been running 28 pounds through the racecraft closed and open for little over a year and never had any issues, can even close it mid pull at full boost haha

    • @GapSauceYoutube

Thats interesting, I'm not a fan of the way it works either. The backpressure it would have even at cruise is enough to worry me with that tiny hole. I'll look into the racetrack unit though, thanks 🙂

I Have a varex in my Pug 106. Sometimes it gets stuck because of the coal retained inside de exhaust itself

Haha it's just not necessary. I, like everyone went through that stage as well. I use a rattle gun sometimes but only to nip it before I hand tighten it, its all about efficiency right 😅.
