Ford dash fan blower resistor pack & strange air-con behavior

- My dash fan control was exhibiting weird behavior. The fan only working on some positions and not others is usually the blower resistor pack, but in my case the air-con was only working in inverse with the fan. What gives?

Thank you Craig! I’ve been following a lot of your DIY’s & nine times out of ten you are spot on! With the resistor you experienced the exact same as I have! Originally I suspected the fan motor but that wasn’t the problem!
I just purchased a brand new resistor from Amazon that works out at $23.54 NZD
Unfortunately the fan that both our vehicles have are unavailable from most wrecking yards in our country! Everything but that won’t fit! Cheers & thank you ! Dave

The AC controls on the dash board are all in one unit. Ford calls it the FCIM (Front Control Interface Module). Any time you see the word module, its just another way to say computer. There is no direct connection between the AC controls and the actuators in your EVAP box. The FCIM processes your input, but the module itself controls the evap actuators. And because its computer controlled, they can program it to do whatever they want. Its like using a word processor over a typewriter. You push a key on a typewriter and get direct output from the key. On a word processor, you type out whatever you are working on, but when it comes time to print, the computer deals with the printer. You don't need direct input.
I understand all that but it doesn't explain why the air-con was working inversely with the fan. If it was smart enough to know the fan was out on one speed, it would fail the AC preventatively on that same speed, not the others that work ok. So there is still some "dumb" resistor based electronics going on, not so dumb I can understand them though!
Nice fix. I have black V6 ST Chia. It's not a terrible car. It Handles well. Just constantly fixing the problems pervious owner didn't fix. This was one of those things. Along with seat motors.
