Chris Poland guitar tone and soloing is instantly recognizable due to him being so unique. He is my favorite of all the Megadeth guitarists over the years.
Wasn't he more of a Jazz player?

@@daveg4236 yep, had several years of jazz in LA and a few years in NY where he, and Megadeth drummer Gar Samuelson started playing music together. Chris helped Dave become a better lead player and Dave helped Chris discover Metal riff construction, and song writing. I think Chris and Kiko are my favorites, but Marty is close behind. Chris is just so smooth, harmonically and melodically tasteful, and has a sense of dynamics that most don't. Kiko is just so good at playing anything, also very tasteful (it's clear that he is listening to the music of the band and what he is playing with a critical, thoughtful, ear at all times), he's phenomenally skilled and very talented, he is a great songwriter to collaborate Dave.
How I describe Kiko could be used to describe newest drummer Dirk Verbeuren. He is probably the drummer who best combines speed, quickness, power, (understanding when to use any, all, or none of those, so YES, Dirk is VERY tasteful), he uses subtleties in complex or simple parts, uses originality and creativity when it fits the song (not his ego), treats the creation of his drum parts for a song as a composition that may develop and build in each part, or from part to part, or as the song progresses, listening to the other instruments, listening to the vocals and lyrics, and is thoughtful in what he is adding to the song. It not just a big drum solo for him, it's about the song first and foremost, but that's what makes what he's doing more interesting and impressive than almost every drum solo I've ever heard.
I haven't been this eager to hear a new Megadeth album since after Rust ...

That's cool they were recording opposite hours in the studio with Dwight Yoakam.
What a great interview. He actually asks questions that long time fans would want to ask if they had the opportunity. I wish this interview went even longer! Is there any pictures or camcorder footage from this studio session? I'd kill to see Chris Poland recording his solos.
One of the best metal albums ever, certainly one of the high watermarks of the classic thrash era. The power and tightness of his album is phenomenal, and the duel guitar shredding of Mustain and Poland is second to none. Everything is great about this album. The other big thrash album of that year was obvious Metallica's Puppets, but I always liked Peace Sells a bit more. I always prefered the sound of raging Marshalls to Boogies. And there is no comparison between Poland and Hammett, or Samuelson and Ulrich.
Same! I liked Metallica’s tones a LOT better on Ride with the Marshalls than their later stuff with the Boogies.
@@primeDecomposition same here. RTL sounds much more alive and raw yet refined. Master sounds dull and compressed imo - but at that time the Mesa Boogie metal sound was fresh and new
I always wondered if James was jealous with Dave having Gar and Chris. I love master but peace sells is a much better record.

Ultimate masterpiece! No filler even the cover is badass with great Poland fills. That album is so insanely different and thrashy as f!
This record was one of those confluence of events that resulted in a record that could never be repeated again. The sound, the players, the attitude and skill, the times . It all hit at just the right moment and exploded.
This is awesome definitely my favorite megadeth album. Definitely one of my favorite albums period. And yes Chris Poland is my favorite megadeth guitarist. What a badass!!!
The KIMB-Peace Sells lineup is my absolute favorite era of Megadeth. Don’t get me wrong, the “classic” lineup was great, as well. But, that first real lineup just takes the cake. The amount of talent and intensity that Chris and Gar brought to the table really up’d the ante for both Daves’ already considerable skill. The end result was, for me, the benchmark for speed metal. It was the ultimate lineup, and no other band within the subgenre compares.

The guitars on this album are super clean. I’m surprised how many great albums were recorded in a short period of time back then. The small amount of money spent on these great albums is also amazing.

I’m a simple man, I see a 40 min inside the album and by god you son a bitch I’m in.
While its hard to pick, this may just be my favorite Megadeth record. Every single track is flawless, and those cymbals man... Gar is something else, he makes drumming a language in its own right!
Poland is equally impressive... And one can see that Dave is just putting everything on the line and throwing some superb solos himself.
Their current lineup is very promising, and with a hair of growth they could accomplish just about anything. I really believe they can match the Rust in Peace lineup in terms of quality and raw expression (Dave just knows how to pick them, all his bandmates are superbly talented) but as far as this lineup is concerned ... I'm not so sure. Kiko is certainly one of my favorite guitarists but the Poland Samuelson tag team is hard to match.
Rather than lament the implosion this band as such had, I just marvel at what they accomplished. I think Megadeth did great stuff, but Poland is no slouch himself, Metallopolis is very good and Ohm is ... A force to be reckoned with (Nick Menza was their drummer at some point, RIP - no pun intended AT ALL)
And their jazz stuff is also floating on the interwebs ... All of this stuff is incredible.
Not as fond as Garr's post Megadeth output tho, I think like Mitch Mitchels, he had far more potential and could have done lots more with his gifts. Luckily there are snapshots of their unique visions, and said legacy lives on.
BTW Jr is a beast, was a beast and will be a beast. Not to put down other players, but for me Megadeth is only fully formed when there are 2 Daves on board. What a hell of a band !

Interesting hearing about Joe Perry's guitar and that this guy owned it at one time. I think Joe got it back from Slash way later on. At least I think it's the same guitar Joe talks about in a Sixx Sense episode.

I picked up the Peace Sell's cassette in '86 while I was overseas (Okinawa, South Korea, Japan) and always had it in my Walkman. Locals were always interested in what kind of music we were listening to and everyone loved Peace Sell's. It would take a while to get my cassette player back sometimes because everyone wanted to hear the songs.
love that album! saw the tour....and bought it soon after. Blew me away. Still my favorite Megadeth disc.

Grew up wishing I was older like most did around '79 when it was rock, new wave, punk, and thankfully the death of disco. However in retrospect to have lived in the 80's (12 - 22 yrs old) I wouldn't trade a damn thing. Witnessed the birth and amazing growth of thrash metal and now at almost 54 still listening to the same stuff my parents said I'd eventually grow out of. Long live thrash
I wondered if Poland used a Rockman. That sound is so distinctive, even plugged into an amp. I used to plug a Rockman Soloist into a Peavey Bandit 65 when I was in high school... 🤣
Yes mustaine said that the PSBWB sound was Marshall’s and Rockmans
On the album Chris used a fender twin with a rockman but on the road jcm800 with a rockman rack unit

Phenomenal interview and thank you for posting. Very cool to hear Randy's perspective on the making of this tremendous album. I remember buying this on cassette when it was first released and being blown away. Still holds up strong to this day.

I've wondered about the details in the recording of this album which is still my favorite by Megadeth. Great interview thanks for sharing this with us metal heads! Well if Randy wants to remix the record maybe we will see a 40th Anniversary edition with the remix if it comes to fruition.

I love these "pull back the curtain" interviews. Great stuff . One of my Desert "Devil's" Island discs ! Gar- Fucked up and still got his tracks done in 3 days. Read that again, 3 days ! Savage !!!! LOL- Drugs didn't affect the recordings other than waiting around for them to score and then recording would start-up- LOL. Yup no affect on the recording- LOL ! Flaming Youth indeed !!! "Peace Sells" meant more to JR than anyone else. My least favorite song off the album. "Good Mourning/Black Friday" was THE song off this record, period ! HELL YES. Remix those first 3 albums at least. FIB have to figure out a way to amplify these updates to a bigger audience. You are getting a fraction of folks that would be interested in your content. Just saying.

I was amused by the "drugs didn't affect the recording" stuff, too. Yeah, right... you're damn lucky those fellas found some smack or you'd never have recorded anything LMAO. He eventually admits he was drinking and doing meth the whole time... so then it makes sense he would make excuses for the drugs.
It's a fantastic interview regardless. I enjoyed how he kept saying they didn't have any special gear, just the same stuff everyone else was using at the time. It was the players and the songs that made the difference. He must have been a good producer/engineer too, because it's one of the few metal records from that time where you can really hear each instrument. That's more difficult than most people think.
I met Chris when he performed in St.louis in the mid 80's. I really wasn't into circle jerks /punk but xtill enjoyed myself. A friend of mine put up the cash, sold the tickets and paid all the bands. I loved peace sells, and when we were hanging out talking about Mustaine, Chris gave me a Dave Mustaine pick. I had some killer skunk at the time. Chris got really buzzed off it and cracked me up when he called the weed "giggle smoke". I laughed my ass off. Never heard that term before. Good time. Really nice dude 🎸🎸🎸

Best Album ever!
I played in a band where the other guys smoked weed a lot. But, we got another drummer, and he was into heavy drugs, so one night when we played a show, he brought cocaine, and they all did it before the show. Not one of them could play worth a squat the whole show. I was terribly disappointed in them all. It sucks that so many musicians were hooked on drugs back then.
Playing music sucks on coke or speed, it’s just nervous energy being channeled and you cannot swing or fall into a “pocket”. Being a drummer. Guitarists tend to play too fast…… you get the idea. WEED- now just about every record ever made in rock-jazz was done stoned as hell. Liked your story man.

It’s unbelievable that Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica were so young and released great albums every two years for many years. You would think young kids on tour and partying all the time would be completely irresponsible. I remember thinking years ago, now these bands are older and have money and so many years in between albums and they just aren’t as good.
To think that they were on heroin and played so fast... If they were sober it might have been too fast to hear!
Peace Sells is a classic and still sounds great to this day. It's a quantum leap above the poor production on the 1st album. My top 5 Megadeth albums are as follows:
1. Endgame
2. Peace Sells
3. United Abominations
4. Rust In Peace
5. Dystopia

Both bands would visit each other’s shows so it’s believable
Lars Ulrich confessed he listened to Peace Sells a lot when it released and still does and Dave, James and Lars already started to hang out again sometimes at that point around 86.
Tuning wise, this álbum is slighty below 440 db, guess it was due to recording technology of those days. It would be nice to know about. That means the band played faster than on the récord.
The tuning is around 427-432hz
nah, they intentionally tuned down just slightly because dave was (kinda understandably) paranoid of people stealing his riffs like what happened with kill em all
So long story short, drugs are not that bad :P
Mustaine was strung out on that tour so bad they cancelled right in the middle of the Australian leg because he ran out of heroin and had to go back to LA to re-up.
Dave forgets this and only blames others.

I think Mustaine has always had issues with his lead guitar players. I get it. He worked really hard but could never play like those guys. Im sure it's frustrating.
Idk, the last solo on Wake Up Dead I would put up there with anything Friedman or Poland ever came up with and that was Mustaine playing that. It’s better than ANYTHING Kirk Hammett EVER came up with for Metallica. Mustaine’s playing shits all over Hammett, if he coulda stayed in Metallica, him and Hetfield would of been the Dream Team of metal, god only knows how epic their writing would of become. Or maybe Mustaine would of stiffled Hetfield, who knows…
@@primeDecomposition i think Dave is a quality pro and better than most. He writes complicated riffs and is a solid metal rhythm player. I just never thought he had the fluid speed of his lead players.

Speed comes from relaxation. When you’re tense it slows you down personally noticed

Such a cheap budget compared to the other guys...those Ratt records were like 150 000 each or something?
I've heard quotes from the band that they had spent close to $1 million on a record. They may have been exaggerating however.
To me the riffs and the solos on Wake Up Dead alone crush, absolutely CRUSH anything Metallica ever came up with; it’s like JV vs Varsity squad. Metallica just had the better vocals and would always have more mass appeal; but I think any true musician will recognize the musicianship has always been way WAY higher with Megadeth. Like orders of magnitude.
Lars fucking blows as a drummer, Kirk & Newstead where average, merely average players at best with virtually zero writing contributions.
MagadetH is Dave, Dave Jr, Chris & Gar. The End.
15:05... Dave was gonna take his band to the top??? As far as I remembered, that never happened. Granted, Megadeth are awesome and experienced success, they NEVER were "at the top". Metallica owned the 80's, Pantera owned the 90's, and who gives a shit after that.🤷🏻♂️

I think megadeth ruled during 1990-1998 because every album was just great. In the 80s they were second place. But I bet if they came out before Metallica they would be ruling the 80s. The 80s came really close with both bands
