    History in Pi Minutes is a series where I look at some popular topics in Disney or Theme Park History and cover them in a bite size format.
    Views are my own and do not represent the Walt Disney Company or its values.
    Recently it was announced that a deal was struck between Disney and the BBC. Disney will help fund new episodes of Doctor Who, increasing the budget considerably, in exchange for Disney Plus becoming the home for Doctor Who outside of the UK while the BBC still retains full creative control. Starting with a series of new specials seeing the return of David Tennant in late 2023.
    It seems like a great deal for all parties involved. Interestingly, this is not the first time that Doctor Who and Disney have crossed paths
    To know that history, first we must travel back to the early days of Disneyland in the late 50s. The Doctor was actually planned to visit Disneyland in an episode, but that was deemed too expensive for the show so the episode was cut.
    Traveling forward in time to 1975, we look at Disney Time. A BBC program that would air on holidays where a celebrity host would present clips of Disney movies. For the Christmas episode of that year, Tom Baker hosted Disney Time in character as the Fourth Doctor with the ending leading directly into the premier of the 13th season.
    Continuing our time space odyssey,the biggest part of our story takes place in the 1980s
    Disney’s CEO Michael Eisner was seeking to expand Tomorrowland in Disneyland and thought a deal with a major Sci-Fi brand would be the best way to do it! At the time, not much was going on with the Doctor Who franchise, but it still had a passionate fanbase. This looked like a deal could be mutually beneficial, helping to revitalize both Tomorrowland and the Doctor Who IP.
    Disney’s plan was to buy Doctor Who from the BBC, build an exciting new ride in Disneyland, and use the opening ceremony of the ride to announce who would be playing the Next Doctor. Then they would go on to star in a new Doctor Who movie series made by Disney.
    For better or worse, this deal never happened so Michael Eisner had to settle for just making a deal with some Flash Gordon rip off film series for the new Tomorrowland attraction.
    Thanks to Disney Historian Jim Korkis, we know a bit about Disney’s plan for the Doctor Who ride if it had been built. Guests would enter in through the TARDIS which would use some clever effects to hide a showbuilding behind it giving the illusion that the tiny police box was bigger on the inside. Guests would then weave through the iconic control room before making their way to board their vehicles for a dark ride that would take them on an adventure through time and space!
    While the loss of a Doctor Who ride at Disneyland is sad, looking back it is probably for the best that the deal fell through, but it is fun to speculate about the alternate timeline where Disney has owned Doctor Who since the mid 80s. There were plans for a movie back then, but what past that? Would we have seen a soft reboot movie in the early 2010s? Possibly as one of those “Johnny Depp wears a funny hat and acts kooky” films that Disney loved back then.
    Would Sora, Donald, and goofy have fought alongside Doctor Who instead of Tron in Kingdom Hearts 2?
    If Disney and Lucasfilm never worked together on Star Tours establishing their bond early on, would George Lucas have sold Star Wars to Disney at all? Instead of Galaxy’s Edge, would we have gotten Galifrey’s Edge?
    It’s fun to speculate like this, but at the end of the day that alternate reality would’ve likely wound up in the same spot as our real one with the sci-fi series making its way to the Mouse’s Streaming Service. Meaning that whatever Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey stuff happens, The Doctor coming to Disney Plus might just be a Fixed Point in Time.

      @Ms.antithesis 12 is my favorite too! I think a lot of people sleep on him just because his first season wasn't the greatest. But he captures that manic ageless energy of being a teenager, an old man, an excitable kid, and a jaded adult all at once that I love to see in The Doctor!
      Blackpool is 100% a bucket list vacation destination for me. It looks incredible

      So, I had actually never heard of it before researching this video. Once I started going down the rabbit hole it seemed like the complicated production and debate over not just whether it was canon but whether or not it's even official seemed like too much to get into as just a brief mention haha
      Don't be surprised if I make a video just about K9 though! Even though I'm usually more focused on theme park stuff that history is fascinating

    Also never knew there was a planned episode actually in Disneyland. I did hear a throwaway line in the McCoy era where he and Mel are in a bus in space but never heard of that one!
    Great Episode overall! Take care and have a great day :D

      Details were pretty sketchy on the Disneyland episode (hence saying it was being worked on in the late 50s when the show didn't premier until the early 60s), and I would love to find out more!
      Sadly all the info I could really find that seemed certain was that they wanted one but it was too costly. Would've been amazing! I'd love to see them do it now though I'm sure with the Disney deal it would probably just come across like a commercial. I'd still like it though!

    If Disney bought Doctor Who and went back and forth between American & British Doctors, I’d 100% hope for Johnny Depp, in my opinion Jack Sparrow is just a drunk pirate version of The Doctor 😂

    • @PiTheThemeParkGuy
      @PiTheThemeParkGuy  Рік тому

      He really would've been perfect for a hypothetical alternate universe American Doctor Who movie made by Disney around 2010ish. Like you said, Jack Sparrow has the same kind of "weird and quirky but in a way where he's still clearly very dangerous yet also uses his goofiness to hide a painful past" vibe

    Technically the bbc retaining full creative control isn't really true. First off the BBC aren't even producing the show rn, bad wolf studios, a creatively independent subsidiary of sony, are producing it, and secondly Russel T. Davies' DWM interview did basically confirm it, but also with the caveat that Disney where apparently giving some creative input, something that's put off a lot of Who fans off of the deal, given the general quality, or lack their of, of things corporate Disney has creative control in. The interview didn't confirm to what degree the funding would increase, or to what degree Disney where giving notes. but it did confirm that the episode scripts where going through Disney, and that they where giving some degree of notes.
    it's semantics ik..

    • @PiTheThemeParkGuy
      @PiTheThemeParkGuy  Рік тому +2

      First off, I adore semantics. With the format I use of short video I often have to breeze past semantics or simplify things that aren't the main point. I genuinely love it when people expound upon things I mention in my videos giving their own thoughts and telling the rest of the story.
      Second off, yeahhhhh. I used the simplified, streamlined version of the story that was originally reported before some more details were learned in that interview and used some simplified language like just saying BBC just to get to the main point of the video. Although I may have simplified the details of the deal too far by not mentioning the uncertainty of how much creative control Disney will actually have because looking at my analytics I have decent drop off after I mention that which isn't common in my videos.
      Personally, I'm just excited for RTD, Tennant, and Donna back and for the shows new episodes to be more accessible to me. But I definitely get the concerns considering how hit or miss Disney+ content can be

      @Ms.antithesis I'm glad we're getting a new showrunner (well, an old one I guess haha). Chibnall had a lot of great ideas, but I don't think he had a great sense of what to do with the series and how to innovate it without losing what made it special. Hopefully Whittaker gets a chance to come back for a special sometime because I feel like she could've really shined under Moffat or RTD

    It's fun to look at Disney's history with Doctor Who, and imagine what they could have done with the property if they bought it outright in the 80's. As for who I'd cast as the Doctor if Disney made a Doctor Who movie, I think Graham Chapman would have been perfect. I think they should revive the idea for a Doctor Who attraction and use it as a replacement for Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, or to finally fill the space where Stitch's Great Escape was.
