Possibly the largest living thing in the Universe. Definately on Earth. I've been to General Sherman, It is truly like walking with earthly god's. All should take a trip to Sequoia N.P. Its worth it.
This tree has approx.119 log truck loads of logs calculated at 5,280 board feet per load - enough wood to lay a 1"x12" board 119 miles, or 630,000 board feet of lumber (average Ponderosa Pine tree - 24" dia. has about 500 board feet) so this tree equals in volumne about 1200 average pine trees. Value of 630,000 bd ft of lumber if you take a value of $5.oo per board foot would be $ 3,150,000.oo True Value of this tree is priceless !!!
REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) - Researchers have confirmed that a redwood named Hyperion in a remote Northern California forest is the world's tallest tree. Steve Sillett, a forestry professor at Humboldt State University, recently climbed Hyperion and measured it at 379.1 feet, one foot taller than previously thought. Hyperion, which grows in Redwood National Park, edged aside the previous record holder, a 370.5-foot redwood called Stratosphere Giant in nearby Humboldt State Park.
A coast redwood was found in 2014 with enough points to almost tie General Sherman on the national registry if it were also nominated. It has a few more points left to gain, but will need a climbing team. The trunk is wider than General Sherman. Search redwoods + year of discovery
Points has nothing to do with volume. Points is girth in inches at 4.5 feet plus height in feet plus 1/4 the crown in feet. Volume is how big the actual tree is. General Sherman is 58,000 cubic feet and there are a dozen Big Trees over 40,000 but there is no coast redwood over 30,000. No way any coast redwood compares to Sherman in volume.
This tree is in Sequoia National Park in Central California, east of Visalia. The giant Sequoias only grow along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Check out the video of the General Grant tree, also in Kings Canyon National Park. It is the second largest tree in the world. There are taller trees in California, just barely, but none as big in volume as the General Sherman. If you get a chance to see these trees, make a trip north (100 miles) to Yosemite National Park.
I believe it is more than 2200 years old, you would have to take a wood sample ( a pencil like core that is bored out )exactly thru the heart and if it was taken 3' above surface ,the tree could have been supressed when it was a sapling-I have seen 1' diameter saplings that were 100 years old.Unless you hit exact center at a few inches above the surface of where it sprouted, you would loose a lot of accuracy. -
I think its older than 2200 years- several years ago I found an old wood trunk ,here in California ,made out of Redwood one board is about 1048 years old , I counted the rings with a magnifying glass ,and a point of a needle !! This board is about 23" across - so how old was the tree it was cut out of ??
Destorys things my friend... A couple Amatures went near my house cutting down a three, And they did it wrong 2 Times!, They didnt cut of the branches, Etc, MY HOLE BACKYARD, was destoryed, And a couple braches did destoy my window, Thank god that i got money to repair it from them.
@SuperTechyBoy Just because a tree is older, doesn't mean it's automatically going to be bigger. There's trees over 4 thousand years old that aren't very big.
why would you want to cut that buitiful tree down??? it's been growing there for 2,200 years! and besides, if you tryed cutting it down, it would take forever. it's not worth taking down anyway.
the dyerville giant is the tallest and most volumous tree ever. They never took the true measurements when it was at it`s largest.Although there are some people of knowledge who knew of perhaps even larger trees in it`s era and area!Come hiking with me some time, you will be amazed...Big Jim
Why did they name a beautiful tree after a war "hero"? When i was young they didnt have a fence around the tree. I have a pic of us standing next to it.
I think there are bigger trees than that one. Some African baobab trees have bigger circumference (also fig trees in Borneo and elsewhere) and the world's tallest tree is located in the Muir forest in northern California.
@freakusa752 Sequoia National Park has been extensively documented. Del Norte county not so. I think it was the tallest tree in the world the hyperion tree in Del Norte was discovered in 1998 that's just a few seconds ago in the grand scheme of things. The conditions are right these tree's are much older and less touched by man kinds foot prints. These are were the true old growth timbers lay!!
2005kanda, You are wrong about the tallest tree, and tallest does not = largest anyway. 1.Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens): 115.56 m (379.1 ft), Redwood National Park, California, United States 2.Australian Mountain-ash (Eucalyptus regnans): 99.6 m (326.8 ft), south of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 3.Coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii): 99.4 m (326.1 ft), Brummit Creek, Coos County, Oregon, United States
@graciemaemarie11 This tree is Beautiful and Majestic, but it is not immortal and if you notice my final assessment of this tree was PRICELESS ,that means beyond the price of money, etc. My calculations are only to give you an idea of its unbelievable immenseness.I have seen this tree in person and love it . As for immortality and eternity we people have available an opportunity that trees do not-but not enough space for a dissertation on that.
Magnificent Nature beautiful Sequoias impressionnant

They say this thing is over 2,000 years old! I could not imagine what it has seen or been through.
This tree is in Sequoia National Park in Central California, east of Visalia. The giant Sequoias only grow along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. @rootsxrocks
You are correct. Way back in 1967 National geographic Magazine had an article about the tallest known Redwood. It stood 367' tall.
Its called the Stratosphere Giant, its about 100 ft taller but the General Sherman has a wider base
once i get my passport, im going straight here.
I'm not going to argue about who has the bigger tree - because regardless, that is one BIG tree!

THEY SHOULD HAVE NAMED THIS TREE AFTER A BETTER MAN.
Destorys things my friend... A couple Amatures went near my house cutting down a three, And they did it wrong 2 Times!, They didnt cut of the branches, Etc, MY HOLE BACKYARD, was destoryed, And a couple braches did destoy my window, Thank god that i got money to repair it from them.
i herd the tallest tree stands at 275 feets its a giant sequoia named general sherman in sequoia national park CA
Tane Mahuta in New Zealand is older and has a thicker trunk. Look it up.
Actually the biggest one is a California Redwood found by National Geographic and it reached a height of 375 feet tall....now thats what i call big
Ikea could make some nice furniture out of that
Next time the oppertunity to say "ive got wood" comes up, i'm using this video as a reference :p
Bah!! I have three pot plants on my dining room table that are all bigger than that!
Comes back as IKEA
I bet those trees think there having a mockery made of them being encaged with a wooden fence...
@SuperTechyBoy Just because a tree is older, doesn't mean it's automatically going to be bigger. There's trees over 4 thousand years old that aren't very big.

that is...... AMAZING
amazing! but you need over 70 inches chainsaw to make blocks !
2200 years old!! holy ass nuts!

i totally want to make a treehouse on that
There were many trees logged with more wood in them. This tree was a bit of a distraction piece.
I wonder how much trouble you would get in if you just cut it down.
There were probably bigger in BC before all those loggers came and cut em down. good that this one was saved.
wow that's amazing. One of the oldest living things on planet. Before Jesus.
cool !! i want some in my Garden
Why did they name a beautiful tree after a war "hero"? When i was young they didnt have a fence around the tree. I have a pic of us standing next to it.
the Tallest Tree ever recorded was douglas fir, and still hold the record
that wood make the best tree house EVER!!!!!!
now all we need is the biggest saw on the planet
@acorntechnique Up until you realize it took over 2000 years to get that big.
I think there are bigger trees than that one. Some African baobab trees have bigger circumference (also fig trees in Borneo and elsewhere) and the world's tallest tree is located in the Muir forest in northern California.
@shootdagerbil yes it is it is near santa cruz california
I wonder if there is tree's off the beaten path that are this big like that no one has found lol

Tallest and biggest are two seperate titles, sequoia is the biggest HxD ratio
the redwoods are the tallest.
DAMN NATURE, YOU SCARY!
`The lost monarch is the biggest tree by volume!
2005kanda, You are wrong about the tallest tree, and tallest does not = largest anyway.

I'd bet all my money and say that some place out in del norte county there is a larger tree 150% sure there is undiscovered
@LittelBlueMen7 "only a theory" is an "argument" that ignorant people use. You know what else is "just a theory"? The theory of gravity.
i bet there are even bigger trees hidden in the amazon
there is a video on here somewhere of a guy climbing it...
@gabepinnick i dont know where did you get idea about natives, I'm speaking about all humans, including myself.
Correction "rhusselbury" hyperion is the tallest tree not the biggest okay ? tallest is different than biggest.
2200 years old... jesus granddad planted that tree.
@Traxxas1992

where is there one taller?
@eponeto for everything else, there's mastercard.
52,500 cubic feet...thats like 410 cords of wood right??

@shootdagerbil It's going to be very hard cutting a tree with a circumference of 10+ feet.
when i go there i will jump over the fence and touch that tree
Make a nice coffee table
notice said 2200 years old - so about 190 years before christ
