Soo good to see this! So useful video! I just bought my camera and I’m going to do snorkel this week. By the way which configuration do u use to have that video quality?
Hi Dana, great that you are going snorkelling! Make sure the battery compartment is closed properly and the battery is fully charged. When you've finished, rinse in freshwater or gently under a tap. Make sure the camera and your hands are dry before you open anything. It's a great camera - you'll love it - I do. I use 2.7K linear, medium sharpness and color protune. But I do then do some post production to bump up colours - if you don't want to do that then better use GoPro color and maybe high sharpness.
Do you use an underwater housing with your Go Pro 7 when snorkelling? - I'd be interested to know how many people do and if the audio is totally blocked. I actually like the eerie underwater sounds you get without a housing.
That’s a good question Mel. The GoPro footage during the snorkelling excursion was straight out of the camera. The audio of me talking was using a lavalier mic plugged into a Zoom H1, filmed on a RX100v and synced in post. Going back to the GoPro audio - I think it picks up ambient sound very well. I know vloggers would mostly use an external mic when they are talking as they feel any camera’s internal mic isn’t good enough, but for normal outdoor sounds I think it’s fine - in fact I’m quite impressed with it. Hope that helps. Just to complicate matters a little - there may well be a GoPro 8 coming out in the next 6 weeks or so - could be even better; or it may drive down the price of the 7 😀. Either way, good news for you.
I bought the GoPro in a shop 2 hours before I took the snorkelling trip. I didn’t want to mess about with extra housing for the snorkelling as I was shooting above water first and I wanted to record sound both above and below the water. I simply decided to trust the spec & performance of the GoPro - I was careful to make sure hatches properly closed, rinsed off in fresh water afterwards and fully dried before opening the hatches. Everything worked perfectly although I would understand anyone who doesn’t trust the waterproofing and doesn’t mind not getting sound - and also when you buy a housing - what are the optical properties like? Just my thoughts and preferences.
My GoPro 7 Black lasted all of 5 minutes this month snorkeling in Hawaii. Never went deeper than 1 meter and after about five minutes it just went black. When I got back on the boat I opened all the compartments and water came out. I did what I could to let it dry out but it is dead.
Just make sure all the compartments are nicely closed, then rinse gently under a tap/faucet at home afterwards to make sure the exterior is nice and clean. Dry off gently with a cloth. I love the audio it records underwater. Have a great fishing session at the weekend. Cheers, Paul
You’re welcome. Make sure all doors are clean and properly closed. Only open them after you’ve rinsed the camera off in fresh water and dried it. Have a good time.
Hi Joanna, glad you liked the footage - I had only bought the GoPro the previous day and was delighted to be able to simply jump into the water with it.

Mang Oe Channel yes, best sound is without a housing. Make sure the battery cover etc is closed properly before submerging in water - and rinse the camera in clean, fresh water afterwards - then dry before opening the cover to change the battery. Good luck!
Dear Paul.. I've been tested my gopro with use housing.. The sound can receive by gopro but not so clear enough.. If we take for a cinematic video it doesn't have any matter.. But for vlogging, the sound receive very low and not clear.. And my suggest, we must put a rubber to lodge a gopro inside housing, cause a little bit tremor can make a bump sound..
