    Hey thank you for your time and advice, I really appreciate videos like these to educate me on underwater filming. Can I ask what color setting do you have the GoPro on and have you used the after market filters that attach to the GoPro? Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    • @HugoMattsson
      @HugoMattsson  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, I've basically kept it on auto. I think GoPro own setting gives a good and balanced saturation för underwater footage. slightly over-saturated but doesn't mind underwater. I've tried filters and the orange tint work well if you don't have a light with you

    • @toriless
      @toriless 2 роки тому

    Thanks a lot for the tips! I'll try these asap! do you think using red filter is also usefull? i've been using it since 2 months, but i've figured out that it only works in between 5 and 15mt.....so i guess it's just better to have a good powerfull light deeper than that.

    • @HugoMattsson
      @HugoMattsson  3 роки тому +2

      No worries, mate. hmm I have a red filter which I've been using on my deeper dives but I've realised that with a powerful light it doesn't make much difference, so red filter is mostly important if you dive without a dive light.

    reallly awesome video and absolutely helpful for me just starting on video UW. I am struggling a bit on the composition and white balance. I am a cave diver and I want to continue with the UW video in the caves. Sometimes I do have some cave mates to dive with but sometimes I don´t. Plus I want to do video to show my family and non diver friends all the wonders I see so I would like to do cool videos on 1st person view so they get the feeling of being there. My struggle now is on composition and light. Water in the caves is crystal clear, so no problems for viz, although I don´t want to bring millions of lumens in there as there are lots of formations that are super white and get over exposed and i also want to leave some areas really dark just to give the feeling there of mystery and show the cave passages available. But i really found out that many of my videos they just look like I am filming a bunch of rocks, that is why I would like to ask you if you have ever done some cave diving and have some tips for cave filming?

    • @HugoMattsson
      @HugoMattsson  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks man! really appreciate it. Cave diving, that sounds awesome! I've haven't got the opportunity to try it out yet tho.. haha. But I know what you mean, and I can imagine it's difficult to capture the "right mood & atmosphere". generally it's always better with too much rather than too little because you can always make it darker in post-production. So a wide light attached with your camera would be preferable. But you can also switch between clips with low light (maybe a torch) and these big epic shots of a cavern :) And if you're shooting first person view its nice to get the hands in so the viewer get the feeling that they're viewing it "from your eyes". Hope some of that was useful.

    • @mxscubabylily1213
      @mxscubabylily1213 3 роки тому

      @@HugoMattsson Thanks! I will try to bring more light and see what happens. I wish I have sort of a drone to attach the lights and make some nice shots controlling the lights placements from far away... but deffinitely I will try to get creative and see how it comes. Some caves are really difficult ones as rocks and formations are different colors and textures and whille some are good with lots of lights, some others get so bright that burn out the whole scene. Some other caves are so huge that my not even 3 big lights with wide beams are enough, but it will certainly have some dark areas. Thanks again for the tips and the video. And whenever you have a chance, you should try out cavern experience, maybe you get addicted to overhead environments and get certified as full cave diver. Here in Mexico where I live and work, we have the best and ideal places to get the best training. Be safe and see you around!

      @@HugoMattsson Cave diving is actually pretty advanced so no surprise about that.
      Wide dive light are hard to find, you can find hundred of 5 degree light models though, I had to go for an extra wide model and that was for only a 90 degree FOV camera since that re circular but the camera view is not.

I have a question about macro: The GoPro cams being wide angle, does this limit your ability to get close-up shots or can you get very close to small subjects and still get the camera to focus properly on them...? and if so, did you find being so close for close-ups has too big a penalty from blocking light away from the subject?

    Would you really recommend to let the iso (or other light options) on auto? Isn't that looking unprofessional? I heard the go pro tents to overlight stuff and it's better to set the max iso to a lower level and correct that in the post production 🤔

    • @HugoMattsson
      @HugoMattsson  3 роки тому

      Well, it's of course better to have as low ISO as you can, but since light conditions can vary so much during a dive. cave, shallow water, deep etc. and you can adjust during the dive it's better to let the camera work it's magic

      Problem is that your WB will change, but thats' also the good thing. because light and color change drastically under water. if you set it at one WB-setting, it might be totally wrong for the next scene and with the gopro housing you can't change unless you take it out

    Hey , thanks for these helpful tips . I’ve a question. Actually,I am a beginner with using a go pro ,so while trying to take a shots of fish underwater with a selfie stick by the go pro , all the fish run a way and the footage looks bad , so the question is ,Are fish afraid of a selfy stick because it looks like a hunting weapon?

    • @HugoMattsson
      @HugoMattsson  3 роки тому +1

      Hmm, some fish are just naturally shy but slow and steady motions improves the chance to not scare them away. I don't think a selfie stick would scare fish more than your actual body, haha

    • @toriless
      @toriless 2 роки тому

      @@HugoMattsson It is ANY motion, just float and not more much. I have had turtles swim under and past me a LOT. Just more as little as possible. I always tell people if the want to see turtle close just act like one and float, do not go towards them, which can also be a crime, just drift with the waves like they do. Let them approach you instead. I have lots of footage of them nibbling off rocks as I just float waiting for them to come by.
