I have both and thought I'd only keep the one I like more, but so far I still have both. If I had to choose one though I think I would choose the Sigma -- much smaller and lighter, slightly wider is overall more useful, a bit less cost, and I've also found the autofocus to be more reliable. The Viltrox just has the odd focus hiccup here and there and isn't bad but I do notice it. As for f/1.2 vs 1.4, there's almost no difference in light let in. Going from 1.4 to 1.2 on the Viltrox only ever so slightly brightens the center of the image but the corners might even get darker instead due to vignetting. Having said all that, there's something very pleasing about the Viltrox images. It does have more potential for bokeh and 40mm equivalent has a more interesting look to me (though it's only a slight crop from 35mm equivalent anyways). They're different enough to be able to enjoy both, especially since the Viltrox really is quite big and heavy. Also I dislike the aperture ring -- I'm not going to relearn muscle memory of controls for the one lens that has it, so it's just another moisture ingress point / accidental settings change waiting to happen. I want to try that Viltrox 75mm 1.2 next.
@@justinburley8659 560g is heavy for a standard prime, even for full-frame. Sony 35mm f1.8 is just 280g; 35mm f1.4 GM is 524g and amazing; Sony 40mm f2.5 is just 173g. All three are full-frame even. Having said that I'd be tempted to consider the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 to be equivalent to a G-master lens. It's still nice to use in-hand but the Sigma 23 1.4 and 56 1.4 together are 620g so it makes a difference if you're travelling, hiking, or on the go.
@ The image quality is incredible with the Viltrox Pro 27 f1.2. It has more of a Sony G (or even GM) look, smoother bokeh than the Sigma and I think a more pleasing look. There is some vignetting at f1.2 though -- when you stop from 1.4 to 1.2, only the center area gets a touch brighter. I wouldn't buy it just for f1.2 brightness over the Sigma f1.4. I'm very tempted to get the 75mm as well since people seem to like that one as much or more. It's equivalent to a 113mm f1.8 on full frame so it'd make a great portrait lens.
I have both lenses and like them both. However my go to out of the two is the Viltrox. I like having the confidence of the extra gaskets as I am often shooting the rain. In fact my two favourite lenses are now the 27mm and the Viltrox 75mm.
You shooting in the UK too? Is that why you need the extra gaskets! 🤣 if so absolutely relatable mate and thanks for sharing your thoughts great combo of lenses 🙌😃
I bought the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 several weeks ago when it was on sale. I love the girth of it then when I got the bottom bracket for my a6700 it just came altogether ergonomically. Optically, I'm just blown away with the sharpness of this lens and how it has that 3D pop if you compose your subject well against the background.
How can we do some single person portraits in this lens?, I personally not good enough to study about lens power. Yet I already search it on many references but still got a question to ask
Very well put together comparison video, as always Curtis! I don't know about you but I'm so sorry that 5-6 years ago there were not as many fantastic lens aps-c available as there are now! My opinion is that the aps-c category has improved a lot! There used to be a much bigger contrast between an aps-c and a FF, but nowadays...keep it up! 🔥🔥🔥
I had issues with chromatic aberrations when shooting against sun reflections with the Sigma 23mm, green fringing to be specific. So I switched to the Viltrox 27mm and I liked it better. The rendering and character in the images from the Viltrox 27mm are amazing!
Great video. As I am getting older and appreciate not lugging around so much stuff (I used to have a big camera bag with 2 bodies and too many lenses) I would go for the Sigma. Lightness is why I went for an APSC system in the first place and I am not convinced I get on with M4T cameras.
I have been loving shooting with the 24mm GM on my Sony ZV-E10II, 35mm focal length for the win! Great video and thoughts. Love what Viltrox is doing for sure.
Of those two, I would use the Sigma 23mm 1.4, but do remember that there also are full frame Lenses you can use on APSC cameras ! I use fx my Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 T* in APSC mode on my full frame Cameras sometimes.
Good comparison! Personally I'd go with the Sigma, partly because of the size and weight in addition to just being the right focal length - but also the price difference is HUGE in Denmark. The Viltrox is about 110£ more expensive than the Sigma!
Nice comparison! Would you say the Sony 24 GM is the better choice in every category (but price)? I shoot on an a6700 and really love the 35mm focal length equivalent. I shoot as many Videos as photos so AF performance and focus breathing are important to me.
The Sony 24mm 1.4 GM are the best performing 24mm Lens no matter of brand or format, I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM Lens and I am very happy with the image quality, the best you can get on a 60 megapixels Camera. I sometimes use the 24mm in APSC mode with excellent results !
Really impressive the performance of the latest Viltrox lenses! I'd say competition stimulates business, but it remains to be seen if especially Sigma is going to counter Viltrox, also in regards of their new small F1.7 lenses... I own the Sigma 23mm and like it a lot, and I'd like to see more APS-C lenses from them...
That wouldn’t be a fair comparison, the sigma 30mm is over 8 years and the Viltrox will be a fair better lens in that comparison. Hope that answers your question mate 😃
The Viltrox is almost a dream lens for me (almost because it’s still affordable). It’s the main lens I want for the Canon RF system, but for now I have to go with the Canon 24mm f/1.4 II until the lens gets adapted. I’m not necessarily jealous of Sony user’s lens options because I know the reasons why I chose Canon, but damn do I want the Viltrox lens! Sony and Fujifilm users are experiencing the best Viltrox has to offer rn!
Canon shot themselves in the foot by not releasing RF mount sooner, now they need to keep it closed for a while more but they would probably be better off starting RF mount sooner and being able to open it up sooner.
@ They aren’t the only ones to do this. Sony did it when they started their mirrorless mount. Nikon still doesn’t allow all the third parties to make lenses on their mount either. It’s a normal business practice
Optically, the Viltrox is a little better by a very small margin. However, the Sigma is smaller and lighter, and for those reasons, I plan to get the Sigma.
@alexeipg huh, that's a pity. No dealbreaker by any means, but would have been nice to have. Especially since fuji shooters tend to like more functionality on their lenses anyways
@@yamazaru8236 yep and on the flipside as a Sony owner one of the reasons I chose this lens is that it’s one of the few apsc specific e mount lenses with all these controls.

Sigma 35mm FF equivalent is so nice to have and that's a good focal length specially for video most of the movie will shoot on 35mm

There's just something special about the images I take with the viltrox that gives a FF 3D pop to them. I sold the sigma 30mm.

Me and my dyslexia LOL
If the 23mm sigma acts as your 35mm than what does the 30mm sigma do lol.
Because of the crop factor, the Sigma 23mm is effectively 34.5mm, whereas the Sigma 30mm is effectively 45mm (acts as a 50mm).
