I love the way the singer just babbles the words out, you can barely understand what he says, but that is the real essence of the song, the fluidity that runs with it.
you heard of Sigur Ros? They basically popularized the idea of lyrics not meaning a thing. Listen to the album ( ) by them and you'll feel so many different things...and then realize that there is no lyrics just made up words (Vonlandic).
13dirty666 At their time R.E.M. were doing it already, I remember reading in Micheal Stipe's bibliography that in the first few albums he was just choosing words that sounded nice with the music, not trying to make any sense out of the lyrics. I kind of agree with this approach, as personally I have to fall in love with the melody and harmony of a song before being pushed to understand the lyrics, that's probably why I love Alt-J a lot too... :D
I love how different this song is. Most songs are just about love, sex, drugs, society, being happy, nature, or anger at the system. But this song is about the portrait industry before cameras were invented. And Alt J's other songs too, they are so different. Matilda and Leon are biased on a movie and Fitzpleasure is biased on the chapter of a book. That is SO COOL! Them studying Art and English in university instead of music probably helped.
Tell me how you wanna be portrayed, now You can have it all, you know that you can have it all That I love you, yeah, I love you Donatello, Frida Kahlo, Holbein You can have it all, you know that you can have it all That I love you, yeah I love you Now paint me a picture And draw yourself drawing a piece of paper with pencil ‘Cause you can’t afford to misrepresent me I want an imitation of reality Gather all your kings and other things That you know my good You might tell me what, ‘cause Do you think that these are my good nature You establish my good nature Buy me aristocracy Now listen to me, yeah Your whores come and go to sit with me I wanna be seen in a hundred years As you see me now, so don’t hesitate Paint my portrait So paint me now You didn’t want to know, you didn’t want to see You threw it in the fire, you threw it in the fire And then you took my eyes, so I could never be The painter of your boy And then I go: King, for king, oh, king, bring the guillotine You didn’t want to know, you didn’t want to see You threw it in the fire, you threw it in the fire And then you took my eyes, so I could never be The painter of your boy And then I go: King, for king, oh, king, bring the guillotine Bring the guillotine
Its not on the album because this song was written when they were not 'Alt-J' , they were using the band name Films. Their original band name was Daljit Dhaliwal.
it's frustrating to know that you haven't discovered other pieces of their majestic work, isn't it? Thank you, youtube recommendations on the right of the page ^^
Because they had two names before and made an EP. They use to be called Films but they was another band called The Films so they changed to altj, so basicly all this Leon, Portait, Dancing in the Monlight etc songs are by Films :)
Jenny Strømsnes 353, Buffalo. Leon, Portrait and Dancing in the moonlight indeed are Films's. If u want it to be counted as Alt-J's songs so it's 5 songs. Is that "so many"? :)
if you think about it, 6 songs can actually make a big difference :) that's half an album. It's an entire emotional and mental journey if you're the kind of person that's easily stimulated by music.
I love the picture! It looks like someone who is very pleased that they just found and ate some delicious and perhaps tart, wild, red berries somewhere.
Fuck, I discovered the thinking of Basil Hallaward before reading The Portrait of Dorian Gray by reliving what this song says so many times. Its so damn cool
Someone, anyone that does well hearing out lyrics-- I've heard this in earphone and can still not decipher. If you can, or do your best, and comment them to me on my page... I'd be in your debt.

13dirty666 I though it was just a weird language. I was trying to decipher saeglopur.
thecodhduderules
lol saeglopur is in icelandic, they did not use hope-vonlandic in every song
Patrizio Erre ah ok, this is why i was confused. Although it still sounds like gibberish to me, they're voices change pitch so much

There is simply nothing else out there like Alt J
So much truth in this statement!
Up there with Radiohead and Sigur Ros for bands in their own categories
This is their best song. I can't believe it is not part of An Awesome Wave.
I love how different this song is. Most songs are just about love, sex, drugs, society, being happy, nature, or anger at the system. So check out Alt-J's "Taro" and - from the awesome movie "silver linings" - "Buffalo"
Have fun, eh!
Whoops... that was embarrasing
And when they make a song hinting at sex or love (Tesselate), the lyrics are still amazing.
this is not about '' the portrait industry before cameras were invented'' ....i'm late 3 years but still...
@@NIKA11 What is it about?
Where are all these songs coming from? Why can't I find them elsewhere? I NEED THESE SONGS THANK YOU ALT-J + UA-cam
"I am not the person to say that I am the one to say the rights to this are belong to me."
PRAISE JESUS FOR UNRELEASED ALT J GOOD LORD THANK YOU UA-cam YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Tell me how you wanna be portrayed, now
You can have it all, you know that you can have it all
That I love you, yeah, I love you
Donatello, Frida Kahlo, Holbein
You can have it all, you know that you can have it all
That I love you, yeah I love you
Now paint me a picture
And draw yourself drawing a piece of paper with pencil
‘Cause you can’t afford to misrepresent me
I want an imitation of reality
Gather all your kings and other things
That you know my good
You might tell me what, ‘cause
Do you think that these are my good nature
You establish my good nature
Buy me aristocracy
Now listen to me, yeah
Your whores come and go to sit with me
I wanna be seen in a hundred years
As you see me now, so don’t hesitate
Paint my portrait
So paint me now
You didn’t want to know, you didn’t want to see
You threw it in the fire, you threw it in the fire
And then you took my eyes, so I could never be
The painter of your boy
And then I go:
King, for king, oh, king, bring the guillotine
You didn’t want to know, you didn’t want to see
You threw it in the fire, you threw it in the fire
And then you took my eyes, so I could never be
The painter of your boy
And then I go:
King, for king, oh, king, bring the guillotine
Bring the guillotine
it's like alt-j had a baby with the strokes
Perfection for 2 minutes and 18 seconds
why can't I listen to this song on spotify? It's not on there anymore
Its not on the album because this song was written when they were not 'Alt-J' , they were using the band name Films. Their original band name was Daljit Dhaliwal.

Warm Foothills - but the only one I've found is the live footage from Reading Fest. It's quite good quality though other than the crowd cheering

There's also "Handmade"
is there anything else not on the album other than leon, portrait, and buffalo?
Why is this version's vocals so much more clearer?
***** I meant literally, their EPs version has really muffled vocals
diastel1996 because they were demos and this is the final version.
