In spite of the high winds and steep terrain, I show you how to find Quartz in the woods for the Flint And Steel technique. Hey Mr West. My name is Sebastian an I’m from south Germany. Thank you for inspire me. I’ve ignited fires from ferro rod, flint and steel and even fire rolls (hardest, even it looks so easy when you do it) in the last few weeks. It is so much fun. The last thing I wanted to try is igniting a fire with the bow drill. 🔥
Hi David! Being easily found throughout the Eastern woodlands, quartz makes for a fine alternative for working with steel. I know it is a challenge going up and down that hill, so thank you for making the effort to do this demonstration.
You've got it all together brother Dave. You know that looks like good copperhead country. Probably not much of a danger to you now but I'm sure you keep your eyes out for them when the weather warms up
This was good to watch. Recently made myself a steel from an old file as per your teachings and i use quartz exclusively as it easily found down here in Australia.
Hello again Mr. West. It's been awhile since I have commented, but a few months ago I made a slimline charred material tin made from the tops of two Copenhagen snuff cans. No cost as you can find them laying around or in the trash. Slim enough to use as everyday pocket carry. I have used it several times to see how viable it is. Thought you or someone else reading this might try it. Works with material or punk. Punk is very thin and will crumble but still works! Keep up the good info sir!
Good golly I thought we had pretty Rose Quartz in Montana & maybe it was just the camera but it almost looked lavender to me at first. Ya know if teachers were like you , Dave .. I bet they’d have fully engaged students. I know I am - although I’m gunna be 43 in a few days, it’s just never endingly fascinating. Thanks for creating such cool videos! 🫶
We have lots of deer, turkey, coyotes, a black bear, foxes, squirrels, etc. Come to think of it someone saw my cat Tybee rub up against a doe last year.
David that is a beautiful rose quarts you found..one knee. Haha. How about no knee that works yet we still hobble along in the woods. Why? It's relaxing..stay safe. Oh need to make some more char cloth..
I’m thankful for the good left knee and the amount of mobility I still have in the other. The bad knee’s given way several times in the last 10 years. I only hit the ground a couple of times per year anymore. Lol! BTW, I ‘m not going to need this body too much longer. This world is not my home. I’m just a passin’ through

See my bow drill playlist.
Cool how you lit the entire piece of char cloth, and it almost ignited when you blew on it. Beautiful.
Thank you!

Yes, lots and lots of them around here. Thanks friend!
If you want a container of flint- how do I contact you via email?
What did you have in mind?
I will get a pic of it and see if you're interested. Just out of Church- so tomorrow.
I'd rather not, but thank you.

I like seeing you don't taking a risk of catching fire in the woods. David you're great! And the Technik is so easy! Have a good time!
Thanks friend!
I always learn something from you. Thanks.
So nice of you!

Pretty rock for sure!
Nice video. Couldn’t help but notice the buck rub behind your right shoulder when you started working the rose quartz.🦌

Cool!! I've been in Greenville all weekend!! Love it - thanks for your channel!
Good demonstration David, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Cool thank you for the video. Just started playing with flint (well quartz is more common in my country) and steel.
It's a great technique!
Beautiful stuff
It really is!
Thank you very much for sharing Mr west great video 👍👌🔥
Thanks Joe!
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl very welcome Mr west
Great video David❤️💚👍🇬🇧
So nice of you!
You should do some standing up bow drilling experiments, no kneeling. For people with two bad knees.
Search my channel , standing bow drill.
You are pretty amazing. You said quartz can be dredged up by tree roots. How did you know that? You can also identify different types of rocks.
Thank you!
I have alot of Flint-Burlington Chert, would you like some?
Online, it looks like some good hard Chert for flint and steel. Have you used it for Flint and Steel?
Different kinds quartz in the south east for sure. I live in Georgia and I’ve noticed if it’s grainy don’t waste your time. Is that true for you?
Mostly grainy with some big crystals within is all we have. I can make a lot of the grainy stuff work.
I don’t have any luck at all in central Florida finding flint/chert/quartz.
I buy great chert from Logical Provisions.
I am waiting for a fractured femur to heal before I can have my knee replaced. When are you going to have yours done?
I'm scared from all the medical incompetence I've seen over the years.

We already have a well known local surgeon that everybody wants for that surgery. He's had great success.
I was expecting a snake in that slow motion part.
Lol!
