I had a 1979 version. It had the fancy gauge package and fancy steering wheel. It had the optional 2.8 liter V6. Had a lot of fun in that car. Wish I had it back.
Had one just like this back in about 1979, bought it from a Ford/Mercury dealer I worked at for $150. They called it Pinto Cruising Wagon. While not fast, with a manual trans it was fun to drive.
I drooled all over the 1977 silver Pinto Cruising Wagon, complete with the tape stripe package and a ton of options. I bought the yellow with satin black 1976 Pinto Stallion instead. I loved my little Pinto.
A buddy of mine in Northern California got this BRAND NEW from his Mom back in '78. It was a stick and had lots of power, and 37 mpg! It was a blue one very nice car
@@331Grabber, mine has the German V6 they used in the Mustang 2s with a C-5 automatic and the old Ford 8" rear end with 4 lug axles , the one where the center section comes out like the Ford 9". Plus at one point or another, somebody put dual exhaust on it. I ditched those 13" mags (like yours) and put on a set of 15" American Racing wheels and tires that a friend of mine sold me off his 86 Mustang. I'm currently looking for a 3.8 SC out of a T-bird to drop in it.
@Ed Riggle Cool. My 75 Pinto has an 8" diff like yours. I got it out of a wrecked V6 Pinto. Mine now has a 2.3 Turbo and a 5-Speed. That German 2.8 V6 is a pretty good engine. Though performance parts are harder to find today. My friend had a 2.8 in his 70s Capri with a 4-Speed and all the goodies like headers, 4bbl intake, hot cam, ect. The thing was a screamer but got V8 gas mileage :) A T-Bird SC 3.8 would be a great engine for a Pinto IMO. My other friend has a 91 5-Speed SC and it's pretty heavily modified. Fun car. Can't beat the blower sound at WOT.

It's cool, not ugly. The Pinto wagons during some years of the seventies were among the best-selling cars in the country, and this one with the Cruiser package was echoing the "Good Time" vans that were so popular during that decade. A really cool find.

I had one of those in the 90' . Was a 1976, 2.3L shift. I keep it fo 11 years with no complaint, that looks solid. Is a very good car. I hope you enjoy it as I did with mine.Thanks.
I call bullshit ! I have a work van that I drive six days a week. I work for myself doing remodeling, so some jobs maybe close to where I live and some are farther. I ve had this van for a little more than five years. I even bought it used an it still doesn't have 200,000 miles on it !!! Either you drove that thing 24/7 or you are full of you know what
I'm not kidding, it had 220,000 when I sold it. I took good care of it. Oil every 3,000. Odometer only went to 99999, but when I bought it said 20,000. But the clutch pedal was worn to the metal on one corner, so I assume 120,000.

I have a 1972 Pinto woodgrain wagon I have been driving for 18 years. 2.0L/4 speed. Probably the most reliable car I've ever owned. Not as nice as that one. It has the original Appliance 5 slotted aluminum wheels that were optional back then. Having trouble finding tires for it. I'm going to get it repainted and the woodgrain vinyl replaced. Plates say "72 WOODY"
That's my car! It ended up having a blown head gasket. I took it all apart, got the head resurfaced for $100, put it all back together and it runs like a champ now. The mechanical fuel pump that was on it worked fine after fixing the head gasket. I just an ordered electric fuel injection setup for it. It's slow going, but its getting new parts here and there. Also the hood latch wasn't broke, it just needed to be shut kind of hard.
I had a 77... Those panel are aftermarket. the stock panel wagon doesn't have windows cut out under the outer panel. Outer panels were welded on. Cool car
I had a 73 California wagon, that I traded my BMX bike for, it's was black, with a 289, with a blown head gasket. The deal was made and I called my Dad to come tow it home, we had a fresh 302 sitting in the back yard, got it home and got to work. Was a fun car.

This definitely cool & would be even cooler with a period correct 302 or 351 V-8 swap while still having a manual transmission. Although i saw a lot of these growing up in the 1980s,I saw less & less of them into the 1990s.

I had the 77 one. With mustang v4. The color was a burnt copper brown. The back hatch was replaced with a solid hatch with NO glass and the portholes were added to match the sides ones... if you paid 700.. it's great deal..
Change out the 5mph bumpers , grill, and headlights with a older model. Paint it green with a cross bone skull and call it the poison pinto. That was my favorite hot wheels when i was a little kid in the 80s.

There isn't anything "cool" about a Pinto. Back in the '70s, Pintos were considered "little old lady' cars. If you were a dude and drove a Pinto, you didn't brag about it. The only place where these were 'cool' was on the west coast. Kids used them as surf board wagons.
I had to find a picture of an original new one to figure out what was going on there on the sides. The exterior panels are missing. I'd weld the contact points between the body and side panels to smooth it out, repaint it some less offensive color and drop a new 310 hp 2.3L in the front and laugh my ass off watching the douche bags in the rearview mirror wondering what the hell just happened! :-)
I've had several pintos throughout my life. And would love to have another one. Unfortunately I live in ohio and if you find something here it's usually rusty
The design of the car is good, don’t get me wrong. It’s the flaw with the rear. The fuel tank was right in front of a very weak bumper. It was known for exploding after getting rear ended even lightly. The funny part was that the commercial said that the experience would be warm. If the fuel tank exploded, it’d be a hot experience.I think the car should get back on the road in the future with this problem fixed

77 -80 is when the California cruiser was made,great deal at 700 bucks worth about 2-3k as it sits. I have a 77 cal cruiser,put a 2.3 litter turbo motor outfit a mustang ir 87-88 t-bird turno motor gear and easy 250 to 300 hp car will run 12s. these are rare and bad ads. oh by the way I've owned around 12 pintos or so i lost count I know them well still have my cal cruiser

I always thought they were kinda cool. I just bought one, a 1978 cruising wagon, its gonna be a project car and hopefully a daily driver for short distances. They're old, so not much you can do wrong, so lets have fun restoring them OUR way.
That was my favorite pinto. I paid $600 in 1986 at a dealership. I'd say you got ripped off or the reason you're wearing those glasses are because your high. I stuck some rims from a Pantera on mine. The bad news was it was from Canada and I lived in Texas so it had no AC.
$700, you stole this classic. The nice thing about the 77 --80 models concerning the bumpers is that they were extruded and stamped aluminum. Very light in contrast to the 74-76 model years. This is the Crusi'n Wagon model. Too bad the interior is so trashed. The trunk model cars were the lightest at just under 2,000 lbs and that would have been a 71 or 72. Love these and the wagon was a great choice for a V8 installation. That's what I did with mine.

In a rear end collision, the filler tube would rupture and spray fuel onto the hot exhaust pipe and muffler. Once the design flaw was known, it would have cost about five dollars per unit to fix. Ford calculated that it was cheaper to pay off a few million dollar lawsuits. Because, it wasn't just Pinto. It was also Mustang II, Maverick and several other cars. Pinto just got all the press because it was so common.

I like it right down to the color. I had one just like it that I put a race built supercharged 2.3 motor in. Thing was a rocket at 1,800 pounds.

I had a 78 orange one too. You're lucky. Mine had orange plaid interior as well. Mine was 2.8 V6 auto. Only the 4 cyl came in 4 speed (or auto)

I hate the loss of rearward/sideward visibility. One of the best features of the regular Pinto wagon was superb visibility from the driver's seat.

I picked up a set of factory exhaust manifolds from a 302 Mustang 2 in case I decide to put a small block in mine.
