    This _is_ a gorgeous movement. First time I saw a Panerai movement. Good work. I'm glad I found your channel.
    Oh, btw, if I may relate an anecdote:
    I've also heard the old chestnut that if one is starting in watchmaking, one should begin with pocket watches. I did not do that either. I had no pocket watches available at the time.
    I started with what was plentiful and on-hand...vintage ladies' watches. Old vintage ladies Bulovas and Elgins were common, and even an Omega or two. Not only were they on eBay for a few bucks, but family and friends had old ones lying around they gave me. And, if I screwed up, no big deal...and I screwed up!🤪🤪
    Yes, they're teeny-weeny, but if you cut your teeth on them, then a standard size watch or pocket watch won't appear as intimidating.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  10 місяців тому

      It must be very uncomfortable being you walking around with huge balls 😂😂 You must have them for starting out on ladies watches. They are ridiculously small to work on!! Many thanks for finding the channel and the comment.

    Epoxy is your friend but it does need to set up over night. You can drill and tap this stuff once it's set. I just fixed the Heads Up Display bracket on the Corvette with this stuff. In the U.S. the go to brand is JB Weld. Been around for decades. You did a nice job on the prep. That will make a big difference to help insure a permanent repair.

  • @khronosbest9448
    @khronosbest9448 10 місяців тому +1

    Nice one Matt ! Insofar as the dial shearing the feet...i wouldnt be surprised if the shear mass of that dial is just too much for those feet to bear.
    Seems like with a sharp enough jolt the dial just might snap those tiny feet right off.
    Maybe Panerai already knows this is a problem.Might help if you gave them a call and related this situation.
    As always thank you for your time and effort to show us how its done. 🍻

  • @andyyoung3233
    @andyyoung3233 10 місяців тому +3

    Oh yeah the dial feet thing that will keep happening because the dial is to heavy for the standard feet it needs thicker feet and open out the holes on the chasse do this in oil then mill the back of the dial and turn down some stock bar on lathe so you have wider feet keeping the bottom wide like a drawing pin shape if you get that I'm not explaining this very well but basically it's a design issue heaver dial with out thicker feet. Andy.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  10 місяців тому +1

      That's plan B. It really is a bad design having a dial that unnecessarily thick. It's brass 100% so why so thick?!?
      As I can easily see the watch again that would be the plan. mill it down and use those genric feet with the spaces on the bottom.

    Great video as allways, many thanks.
    My suggestion would be to support the juwel of the center wheel while pressing the cannon pinion on it. Sometimes this needs a liitle bit too much pressure and then the risk of pushing this juwel out of it´s correct position becomes very likely.
    Therefore i do this job directly after having mounted the plate which holds the center wheel in place, obviously requiring the turn over of the plate for an addional time, but believe me it´s worth it. Reudjusting the juwel takes much more time.

    Humble opinion:
    Strangely: I really wonder if the dial has ever been re-attached? Your watch has a 6498-2 which is a variant of the 6498-1, the 6498-2 is usually COSC & high beat compared to the 6498-1 (much slower).The 6498-1 has NEVER had a problem with their dial feet whatsoever & the high beat should not be the problem. If the problem persists the clearance between the dial and canon pinions should be watched attentively(the original feets could have been bent(non intentionally) and cause havoc! 😱☠️👿🫣
    Beautiful work as usual on your part 👌❤️👍
    Like you said nice finish on that movement: 👌❤️👍
    Have nice day my friend! 👍

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  10 місяців тому

      I spoke with my friend about it and if really warming towards the dial got replaced. I just see no evidence of a repair. I just hope for him they didn't swap a T Swiss T with a L Swiss L lolol
      Clearance was good, I just think its too thinner dial feet on a very very thick dial.

  • @Ba_Yegu
    @Ba_Yegu 9 місяців тому +1

    Holy Super Fresh Cow! I've here the Technical Drawing of ETA 6498 original dial and it says the standard thickness as 0.43mm! That's the thickness and thus weight the dial feet are designed to withstand.
    Why did Panerai sacrifice the structure strength only for looks?

    Thank you for sharing this on UA-cam. While I love your enthusiasm for watches, your gushing about this one is not really justified. Just because Panerai had three of the bridges decorated and some screws blued, the overall impression of the movement is not good: tool marks and unrefined edges as well as a lousy service on the dial screws speak for themselves. Their watches today are much, much worse, admittedly, but this one was extremely expensive and is just a manually wound (no seconds) time-telling watch.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  10 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment, It is true that I gush a little over older Panerai's. I just really love how this case aged. Plus it belongs to someone I know. I agree about the dial feet issue but I'm really warming to it being over the thickness of the dial. I'm surprised others haven't had this issue.
      Don't watch any of my Enicar videos as the gushing levels would be too much to handle lol. I highly collect that brand so have a natural bias 😂
