  • In preparation for Hurstwic's Fire Festival in July at Eiríksstaðir, we have conducted a number of preliminary experiments. At the festival, we will use experimental archaeology to investigate the common Viking-age battle tactic of attacking an opponent by setting fire to his longhouse.
The nuances of this kind of attack are described in this video:

This progress report discusses our second test burn and what we learned from that experiment. We built a replica of the door and framing elements around the door for a Viking-age turfhouse to test how easily the fire moves from the kindling on the outside, through the door, and into the interior framing elements of the house.
This burn was conducted before our more detailed tests, with a more accurate representation of the framing elements, summarized in an earlier video:

The Fire Festival is a festival of experimental archaeology, which will be held at the center of experimental archaeology in Iceland: the reconstructed Viking-age turfhouse at Eiríksstaðir on July 5-7, 2024. More information is on the webpage for the festival.

Given the fact that germans and Danes lived side by side for centuries from the dark ages to the 1800s, it seems highly likely that kampfringen and glima are probably the same system or there is a high degree of overlap, especially with unarmed techniques.
