Guy was in the Army for 9 years. What you get from most veterans that did well during thier military service. Military is a great way to start out if you don't want to go to collage.

Big part of it is that he’s got kids already. A lot of the guests are young people or older people that never got it together. Fortunately/Unfortunately having kids makes you *need* to get your money right

As a veteran, when I saw my bank account after basic training, I spent a lot. I've met dudes who lived paycheck to paycheck, then I met dudes who had nearly 6 figures from just saving. Military guys really are a huge spectrum.
Bingo. I was enlisted for 6 years and I knew people living in the dorms driving cars worth double their annual income, but I also knew E-9s that had skimped and saved for 20+ years and they're set for retirement by 45.
I was dual-military and our dumbasses fell into the first group haha real glad civilian life slapped us in the face in our 20s and we got our ish together
What did you spend during basic?
@@jvolstad Nothing during basic, I never had my phone or went to a store. So when I got done after 14 weeks, I had like nearly $5,000 in my account.
Very similar to the oil and gas guys. During booms you make crazy money. I mean i was pulling 1500 dollar day rate working for Qatar gas company. But it’s a hard life of 20 days on 20 days off. On the plus side I saw the world.
Yup left the military post deployment with $24k consumer debt 🥴 those who save SAVE those who dont are debt central. Doesnt help that drinking is “essential” and expensive.
Caleb, you should take someone who was on the show and take them grocery shopping and show them and us how to shop for food on a budget. It would be perfect content!

You’re ignoring that those aspiring actors and streamers are like 18-22 years old-this guy literally says that’s the exact age he did the same stuff. No need to insult the young people for making the same mistakes this guy made too. He’s just older and learned from it.
He admitted he blew through his money when he was young like a lot of ppl do. You just wanted to have a dig at ppl who have creative aspirations
And they should take note of this guy as he shows what happens 10yrs later after all the fun and debt is racked up. I wish I'd had access to these types of stories when I was in my 20's. I spent everything, barely saved & had a lot of debt. Much better at finances now but still saving for a house years later

Refreshing to have a guest on who takes ownership for their problems, attacks them, and creates a plan to reach their goal. I feel like everyone thats been on for the most part you know they’re not going to fix their situation but this guy definitely will.

This is amazing. This guy's view on not forcing kids to take care of parents, messing up early, and working on fixing stuff later. And acknowledging that it takes hard work AND luck/privilege to be able to fix it. I wish him all the best!!! Sometimes people think that 6 figures just solves everything. It takes a looong time to fix. And if you don't have family that taught you finances, you fall for dumb debt solutions etc.

Around the 6:00 mark and while he's made mistakes it's commendable he realized he couldn't pay for rent and got up and did something about it with the car detailing. No doubt he's a hard worker. Hope he can follow Caleb's plan and turn it around!

This is such a common problem.
I lived this in my early 20s and I’m still dealing with the consequences.
I’m in my 40s.
These guys come out from the military with ZERO financial knowledge. When you are in, ALL you bills are auto pay. Your rent is taken before you even see it in your account. And you are a giant target to EVERY credit card or financial institution out there. My now ex husband saw guys leave the service in debt up to their eyeballs because if you are in the military you will get approved period. They know you’re on autopay, and know you are probably making more $$ than ever in your life. There is NO education or push to save from anyone. These are 18-25 year old KIDS. There needs to be some sort of educational financial program for these soldiers when they join AND when they leave teaching proper saving and spending. I’ve seen SO many soldiers come out and just lose everything due to zero accountability and education and it’s heartbreaking.
Finances are a zero sum game. You need ignorance to pay for the wealth of the intelligent.
I can’t speak for everyone’s military experience, but we have financial training once a year and someone that’s a financial advisor is the speaker. I’ve never spoken to one because I’m comfortable allocating my money to different accounts for future expenses but we all have access to this. Just needs to be pushed out better I guess
True story. I left with over 75k in debt and a credit card with a 25k limit... the only thing I never got that I should have was a house. It took all the patience and effort in the world to claw myself outta that.
There’s literally free financial literacy courses for every service member or their families. Most branches also offer one-on-one financial guidance as well. If someone wants help, they can get help. But you can’t convince someone to help themselves.
We do have "training", the problem is its so boring, monotonous, dry and often presented at random while simuntainsly being shoe horned in other mandatory briefs that everyone just stops caring just to reach the end of the briefs.
What a delight this guy is...as everyone has noted, hardworking, smart, humble, no BS, teachable, good listener, has a plan...10/10! I hope he comes back in a year or two and we can all catch up with him and see the fruits of his labors. Keep it up, Thomas! We're all rooting for you.

The fact that Caleb has influenced so many people including myself in a positive manner and it’s beginning to show is an amazing development of content.
This has been my favorite episode in a long long binge. It's very frustrating watching folks who claim to want help but have a mentality to combat your advice/ plans. Granted, your plans can be very stringent and a hard pivot for someone who has had NO financial discipline, but too many people are just here for whatever fee/ publicity you might provide. It's infuriating. More like this dude! Mad respect!!!
107 a week for daycare is CHEAP
I knew he was probably Army. They were writing kids massive checks in 2005-2015 to join. Then he said he had telecommunication experience and I knew he was probably a 25 series. I used to work with guys like that. Smart, hard-working…best people I’ve ever known. And they’d often blow their entire bonus on a terrible car loan.
Luckily, the Army got a bit better trying to dissuade soldiers from doing that. But it still happens. I’m glad to see someone on the other end of that trying to do better. This guy’s going places - I have no doubt he’ll be in a better place soon.
This was so encouraging! I watch everything, but this guest is in my exact situation, except I make less. Early 30s, I'm super passionate about paying some debt off and saving for my kids and willing to do what I need. Thank you for having him on!

Ive been doing Ramsey's baby steps for 5 years. Family of 6. And we do the $1k. I can honestly say there hasn't been an emergency that cost over 1K that we've come across yet. There have been some medical issues but we're able to pay those off with time. It definitely lights a fire under you and makes you angry about living in debt. We have paid off 80k in 5 years.. making about $70k a year. Very challenging but possible

I'm also a veteran that works on building cell towers and I went through a bad financial phase after getting out. I make just over 110k a year and I'm watching this because I see the worth of my monthly income and I don't wanna ruin this moment. Climbing towers is a very lucrative career and what he said about being laid off on Friday and starting a new job on a Monday does not surprise me at all. I actually dropped out of college to use my GI Bill for this trade and it is honestly the best decision I've ever made.
Caleb, your upload schedule is so tight that it has cut my UA-cam browsing time in half. Hardest working man on UA-cam right now, we appreciate you.
This just helps prove that the lack of a college education doesn’t mean someone isn’t intelligent. This guy has a good head on his shoulders and is very well spoken. He messed up (as most of us do) in the past, but he learned from it and is doing his best to fix it. He has gained some great financial literacy so I have high hopes for his future. Really enjoyed this one Caleb, best of luck to him!

My dad had that "we dont talk to our kids about finances" attitude too and it was a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE disservice to me, looking back as an adult. I wish they'd been more open about money with me now that I'm older. Parents: teach your kids about responsible finances!
Climbing towers is one of the most physical demanding jobs. Sometimes you get shocked, burned, and very cold. Good for you sticking it out.

I am child of two parents that will never Be able to retire. It is incredibly stressful for me and my siblings having a financial burden that we cannot afford hanging over us.

one of my parents left the job market over a decade ago. Not necessarily to retire but to be a dependent ofmy other parent. My other parent can never retire, but still is supporting the other one

This conversation was great! One thing I wish they discussed is insurance. Particularly long term disability insurance. With the nature of his job, all that time in the car, after talking about his accident, and having a non-working spouse, I would hope he would have a solid LTD and term life. Especially with that income and two kiddos. He even mentioned that he doesn’t want his kids to feel responsible for him. He has a good plan, but what happens if life hits between now and then? Glad to see someone who is a few years older and past the mistakes of their 20’s.

Honestly, one of the best guest you've had. It was nice to see someone in a bad situation and already making steps to solve it before coming on your show. The in the middle of the financial journey type guest are a nice mix in with the ones starting at the bottom.
This was a great guest. He never gave excuses about his bad financial decisions and he was open to fixing his financial status.
I did a debt consolidation program in oct 2020 & just finished it last month & honestly it saved me $5k & now I’m rebuilding my credit & learned my lesson. It was hard making huge bi weekly payments but it really helped us

I’ve enjoyed this episode a lot, only think I’m looking for now is a similar episode but with someone who has a more average wage for the United States. Super happy this guy is able to get out of this hole but I’m interested in how this episode would have gone for someone making closer to 40-50k.
I didn’t hear anything about Life Insurance being discussed but I may have missed it. In my opinion, this is a necessity for someone with children and not to mention the high cost of a burial and burial plot. I had a coworker, who was a single mother of three, who didn’t have life insurance. We had a discussion about the topic and she decided to enroll in a plan through work. A few weeks later she was killed in an automobile accident. It happens too often.

I am a 100% disabled veteran. I completed Naval Pilot Training - (Navy spends about ‘$1M
producing ONE pilot ).
That FREE training allowed me to become a major Airline Captain spending 15 years flying to Hawaii

I have NO debt , passive lifetime spendable income

This audit is the most relatable for me and a lot of blue collar workers. I don’t mean to trash others, but the other audits don’t interview people with what I would define as a work ethic. This audit shows how important financial knowledge is. He makes really really good money and has for a majority of his life, yet still struggles with saving, living within his means etc. Almost everyone I’ve talked to about their job or money being tight thinks the only answer to their problems is to make more money. It can help, but often it only makes things worse because they develop ego, or think they’re fine. Very good episode

The stress of living in debt is so real. I was in 10k of credit card debt just a year ago and I already forget how often that used to keep me up at night. Paying it off it such a load off!

22 years old, blue collar. youre absolutely right. I see it daily. Im making just under minus the family and I can only imagine the "burden" it brings. Cant imagine if I had to take care of a family as well, id go under lol.
I'll give you some advice, dont marry a woman with kids, and definitely dont pay for her previous mistake (divorce).. save your money and focus on you. The father will add everything you need in life if you follow his order and you'll live a happy life..
@@JackWorkz it really depends on the woman and the kids. I’ve seen it done multiple times and I’ve seen it end multiple ways. Straight up refusing a woman because she has a kid is a great way to miss out on a good woman. Both my father and my best buddy have had success in marrying a divorced woman with kids. My poor uncle did not. It all depends.
@Winry Fair enough, but why take the risk? It's better advice to find a good woman and start your own family instead of taking on another man's family. The kids will grow up to resent their mother for taking them away from their father. She would be better off raising the kids to adulthood and then look to re marry.. just my opinion, of course.. children need their father's more than anything
I don’t want to get political, but it’s this wake up that people are talking about when they say having a family and taking on that responsibility is the best thing that can happen to many men and why the people who say marriage and kids are a scam are missing the boat.

50K per diem is taxable if expense reports are not submitted. This could ruin his financial future and life if he's not very sure it's tax exempt and gets audited. Imagine 3 years from now getting hit with $36000 in owed back taxes. That could derail the next 10 years+ of his life.
seriously, cause it's not just the taxes, but the penalties and interest of those three years.
I’m liking an commenting on every post talking about this bc I really hope this guy sees them as top comments and has an independent tax accountant verify his situation. IRS Audits go back 7 years and it’s no joke if you get hit with findings.
Not a CPA but this set off the alarm bells for sure. Compensation is taxable, whatever you label it. Why doesn’t every company use this loophole? Why stop at 50%?
