  • With the model and construction being the same on all Ridge wallets, many speculate that the Ridge wallet material is driving the price you pay. We look at the cost of the material, weigh the material of the wallets and take one apart to understand the value of the material to the cost. ‪@RidgeWalletYT‬

    Ridge wallets are well constructed, what experience have you had with them?

    • @OneTalaw

      walletopia. The Ridge wallet is a nice idea, with an OK design. I’ve had mine for almost five years now (rotating between wallets). Although credit cards slide and virtually disappear within the Ridge wallet, selecting a particular card you still have to take them all out select the card you want, place all the cards back. The same thing applies to carrying cash, you have to remove it all, select what you want and then put it all back. Both the features are a bit of a pain but this is the price you pay for such a small designed wallet.

      i work in quite a warm/hot environment, and got annoyed with my leatherwallets becoming soaked in sweat and feeling wet for hours later. i've got the carbon fiber, because i'm a motorsport aficionado and like the design and material. i have no problem with getting the right card out, but i too find it quite annoying that i have to take all the cash out o get the right bill. it helped me save up quite some money in coins, i keep them lose in my pocket and just toss them in a glass at the end of the day.

    I’ve had the Titanium and carbon fibre versions and ended up selling them both. I enjoyed using them at the start, however, when removing cards, when you poke them up, then sometimes trying to remove one would result it a few popping up and out too much = me juggling cards in the shop queue 😂 So overall I got bored very quickly and got rid. Thx Mark for the prices. It is very surprising how little cost there is in terms of the raw materials involved. 👍🏻🙂

      Thanks Richard and I agree. I found that when trying to pull cards out, the front and back were easy, but if you tried to pinch them up, they would often just pop out, so you ended up taking the entire stack out anyway just to reorganize.

    You also have to take the raw material, and include the outside process, or plating that goes into the raw metal to get the different finishes in the product. You can’t justify the cost on raw material alone. You need to consider raw material processing (Cad plating, anodizing, etc.), which can increase the price of the material greatly, plus labor. Just my opinion.
    I have owned my Carbon Fiber Ridge Wallet for 3 years now and counting, and I have yet to replace any parts. I love it! Very durable and worth the price. I have over 12 cards in mine, and it’s still in great shape.

    • @walletopia

      Hi Danny, yes, you’re right, those processes will increase the cost. I didn’t venture into that as that costing can have a lot of swing in it. However they are vanity pricing (which I don’t look down on as it’s what they feel the market can bear). They do produce a high quality wallet, good to hear it’s performed so well for you!!

If you compare the knock off and the original material to material there will not much difference in terms of material price. At most 50% high price for the original. And a better finishing will give the vibe of being premium. That's all. But if you are satisfied to to use the original and think it doesn't matter how much that cost then it's absolutely no one else's business to question your spending.
      But at the end if you compare material to material including a cost of better finish in that case if Ridge wallet is 100$ and a Knock off is 12$ the actual cost of a Ridge wallet will be 20$ and rest of the 80$ you are just giving them for marketing. Titanium destroys your drill bits its a mother of a material to work with. I'm assuming the cost of titanium version is in the amount of tooling required. Aluminium much more forgiving... Can't say much about carbon fibre I've never worked with it. Love the review and the comparisons not many reviews go that far 👍🏻👊🏻

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  3 роки тому +2

      Great insight and yes, the manufacturing beyond the material cost would be different due to the difficulty of the materials.

  • @mattsoup4121
    @mattsoup4121 4 роки тому +6

    Raw material is generally the smallest factor in manufacturing. Machining titanium is quite difficult and eats through tooling (which is expensive) and takes longer per part. Carbon fiber is expensive to work with because sanding and cutting it generates hazardous dusts that need cleaned from the air and it takes different tooling than metal materials.
    Is there some price "modification" here? More than likely, but raw material price has basically nothing to do with manufacturing cost on small consumer products.

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Charles, thanks for the comment. Yes, in most cases, the finished product from raw material contributes to the overall cost with labor being most significant. I didn't include that due to the variability, very much in line with what you mentioned. What I didn't mention, that is obvious when you think about it, is that the final components from those materials are not complex, they're actually drop dead simple to manufacture, so the pre-assembly cost would still be low, especially since Ridge wallets are made in China.

    • @mattsoup4121
      @mattsoup4121 4 роки тому +5

      @@walletopia Those plates being as thin as they are is actually a big problem for manufacturing because will have heat build up problems and some other issues. Chinese products are cheap because the usually lack quality control but you can get high quality Chinese parts and they end up costing as much as parts made in the US.
      I've worked a good bit in manufacturing and it's a lot more complex than you'd think. Material handling equipment, machining, and finishing aren't as simple as most people would expect. Something as simple as an axle pinion in your car requires about $6 million in tooling and it isn't even that precise and it certainly isn't meant to look pretty.
      By having several different manufacturing lines for each variety and working in some lower volume and harder to work with parts their costs will go up a good bit.
      Again, they're definitely adding some "premium cost", but I would totally buy that the CF and titanium plates cost 30-60% more to manufacture.

Once you've gone through that, then I would suggest going over to our explore site at explore.walletopia.info where you can use filter's to drill down on the type of wallet with some suggestions.

    Should compare the raw material by volume instead of weight cuz three materials have different density

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  4 роки тому +2

      Interesting, but density calculates the intrinsic values of the material components (mass and volume, which includes height, width, and length), while weight relies on gravity, and the mass of the object. So while the volume would be different based on density (carbon fiber would be less dense), does that make it more valuable? Since markets place value on material based on weight, that's what gives us the commerce value against price to make a value comparison.
      That said, it's a whole different comparison if we look at durability, that would be interesting.

  • @cam70ds

    For costs you should include not just the materials. If you are talking raw then sure the cost is a bit off. But there are the metal finishes, straps, hardware, plastics and the RFID deterrent. None of these are free either. These should all be included in a comprehensive review IMHO.

The wallet on europe site version, it is grade 2 titanium and not 5. 2. On each of the 3 boxes that came, it shows Made in China. 3. The wallet got in my hands later than it was supossed to arrive. Not to mention i paid more than Americans do for it. I emailed them asking why in America is grade 5, but on all other site versions for Europe, England and Canada it is advertised as grade 2 titanium. They simply said it's a mistake, but they didn't fix it. So i have doubts that this shit is even made of titanium as long as it is made in china and as long as they have differences on site. I didnt even unseal it, ill send it back they way it came.

      Factor in every step from schooling to the end product and you’ll see that the 70-80% estimate is waaaay off. Eventually once material orders and factory production, marketing and shipping is steady the profit will increase but for any business once you have success you grow and that costs more money. Not to mention designing new products. I doubt the creators are actual cash in hand millionaires anytime soon. Titanium may be the hardest metal but is known to scratch very easily and thus a anti scratch coating is generally used. Does this wallet have that coating? When selling a wallet aesthetics plays a huge factor and how resilient over time is more important to me than repeating the same thing over again.

      @@walletopia I dont get how comparing the cost of manufacturing without as you said not accounting for other miscellaneous costs helps in any way. The comparison was limited to the cost of the material and if it justified the price. Perceptions abound that carbon fiber, for example, somehow makes something more expensive. So basically I need to buy a wallet to accomodate the lack of flexibility of this scratch prone product? I only use three credit cards. What about a provision for a tether? You'd think they could design some modularity beyond a choice of a strap and a clip. They have to charge so much because they"re made one at a time with an anemic product flow. They're in it for the quick money not to reinvest in a real factory. The Chinese can easily knock these off cheaper, because they can easily run these through a non dedicated line, yet rearrange manufacturing sequencing this item with real existing machinery in place.
