With Miao yin giving -50% cost to upkeep and harmony giving reload speed reductions. Cathay peasants can pump out insane damage on the defensive. Hell even the jade warrior archers are basically just and upgrade to unit health and toughness. But they have less projectiles. Basically Cathay archers can get pretty insane in the right scenario
It is best not to lead them to the meat grinder. Their effectiveness will improve as long as to keep them alive while fighting the enemy that will increase their kills and experiences. They’re affordable, and important support ground units with volleys of arrows, cheaper artillery team than the Field Trebuchets, and be able to counter enemy Tier 1-2 flying units.
They’re the worst if you look at their stats and nothing else. But if you consider their cost-effectiveness and their role within their factions both of these units are actually more than servicable.

That's what happens when you treat your peasants as an army unit and give them actual reasons for their faith rather than treating them as lowly scum that's only good for dying. Cathay is supposed to have like the most well-organised army among human nations, with every unit having its role so you gotta make sure even temporary militia units are equipped well enough to fulfill their role.

To be fair we have to consider what faction they belong to, they are brettonias only archer units which by default makes them good, especially since they are dirt cheap and have good range for their quality. Pitting two units against each other like this is just not a likely scenario to ever happen.

I remember seeing my grail knights loose to some savage boar big uns and thinking: « what’s the point? » worse infantry, bad artillery, average cavalry average heroes. I legitimately got into an argument with someone over stats regarding worst units. One of my buddies played Lizardmen but said skinks suck; I told him that skinks are cheaper than most units, have a lower cost up keep, have excellent ambush and mobility stats, and if you run them right Skinks are line breakers. He said I was wrong; I told him, next time you run a battle, try actually flanking enemies with skinks and watch how fast they fall apart. If you level them up enough with their buffs they deploy outside the standard deployment zone, that's ALL skink variants. Don't underestimate Bretonian Peasant units; if they get buffs and bonuses they can be murderous and dangerous, especially if they just need to hold a line long enough for a flanking attack by knights and foot soldiers.
According to TOW Bretonnia should have armed squire as higher tier ranged unit, so there would probably be a round 2 between armed squire and Jade crossbowmen.
Whats sad is that Peasant Archers, specially with Pox Upgrade, are actually *really* good archers..... as long as a breeze isn't coming at them. they certainly out dps Peasants and may be even jade crossbows.
Part of it is what basis you're comparing on. Unit for unit? Cost for cost? Upkeep for upkeep? I'd wager that equivalent-upkeep comparisons of Peasant Bowmen would actually have them do pretty well against most other archers.
I know medieval 2 is older, and it looks more dated, but I still prefer the combat in that, to this. Medieval just feels like there's more weight amd realism. It feels like people are getting ripped apart by arrows, this feels like they're throwing paper balls at each other. The units feel a lot less alive too. Idk, I'm not sure what they did, but it's worse.
Don’t forget Cathayan peasant archers will also get harmony bonuses in most typical situations. I’m honestly surprised Brettonia lost this without harmony but I guess the leadership speaks for itself
Thats Stuff people could tell you already beforehand, because the Cathay Unit is Bigger, which means more Arrows which means more Damage Output. Aside from that, there is a certain degree of Randomness to TW Games...so only let 1 Unit Fight is not a Big enought Sample Size, you should use 10 vs 10 or so and see how it ends up in 1v1 Fights.

The blood effects are embarrassing. They went from 'sensible' to 'justifying DLC'.
I think they're on higher or max settings in the video. You can turn them down to be small splats, or turn them up to huge spurts.

I'd argue Empire Archers or Goblin Archers are worse mostly because of their low range. Bretonnian Archers are a staple and an auto include.

Before creating the final video, I run the battles multiple times over and over. Bretonnia peasant bowman actually ouput higher damage per volley.
