Myofascial pain syndrome is a common chronic pain disorder that can affect various parts of the body. Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by presence of hyperirritable spots located in skeletal muscle called trigger points. A trigger point can be felt as a band or a nodule of muscle with harder than normal consistency. Palpation of trigger points may elicit pain in a different area of the body. This is called referred pain. Referred pain makes diagnosis difficult as the pain mimics symptoms of more well-known common conditions. For example, trigger point related pain in the head and neck region may manifest as tension headache, temporomandibular joint pain, eye pain, or tinnitus.
Symptoms of myofascial pain syndrome include regional, persistent pain, commonly associated with limited range of motion of the affected muscle. The pain is most frequently found in the head, neck, shoulders, extremities, and lower back.
Trigger points are developed as a result of muscle injury. This can be acute trauma caused by sport injury, accident, or chronic muscle overuse brought by repetitive occupational activities, emotional stress or poor posture. A trigger point is composed of many contraction knots where individual muscle fibers contract and cannot relax. These fibers make the muscle shorter and constitute a taut band -- a group of tense muscle fibers extending from the trigger point to muscle attachment. The sustained contraction of muscle sarcomeres compresses local blood supply, resulting in energy shortage of the area. This metabolic crisis activates pain receptors, generating a regional pain pattern that follows a specific nerve passage. The pain patterns are therefore consistent and are well documented for various muscles.
Treatment of myofascial pain syndrome aims to release trigger points and return the affected muscle to original length and strength. Common treatment options include:
    - Manual therapy, such as massage, involves application of certain amount of pressure to release trigger points. The outcome of manual therapy strongly depends on the skill level of the therapist.
    - The Spray and Stretch technique makes use of a vapor coolant to quickly decrease skin temperature while passively stretching the target muscle. A sudden drop in skin temperature provides a pain relief effect, allowing the muscle to fully stretch, and thus releasing the trigger points.
    - Trigger point injections with saline, local anesthetics or steroids are well accepted as effective treatments for myofascial trigger points.
    - Dry needling -- insertion of a needle without injecting any solution - is reported to be as effective as injections.

I bought a book on Trigger points. Got sick of doctors saying nothing is wrong. Fixed the pain myself. Look for a good book on trigger points. I advise before you do to at least try once with a therapist to get rid of the knots in your body and that gives you an idea where the knots have been, as sometimes they'll appear again in the same place, especially if you go to gym like I do, and using heavy weights. Since I did that, I am always able to get rid of the knots myself. Don't let anyone especially doctors say nothing is wrong. Your body is in pain, it's telling you and so you need a solution not some pep talk or motivation.

      I completely agree with you!
I've been a Reiki Master healer since 2000 and have helped so many people completely recover from something the Dr's had them scheduled for surgery to "repair". They are completely taking advantage of people as well as setting them up for post surgical pain, some for for the rest of their lives.
In 22 year's I've only seen a few people that couldn'tt recover because a rotator cuff was torn or a blown out knee or hip and suggested they consider surgery with a great Dr. because there's no coming back it's so bad. Even the Physical therapist haven't been trained properly because they're trying to help people who shouldn't have had their bodies cut to begin with.
You'd think before going that extreme route they might suggest trying someone skilled in massage if they truly cared about human wellness.
I use both massage/Reiki energy to work on people with fantastic success. I also understand we sometimes need the skill of a very good Dr or surgeon, but much more often it's an unnecessary way for Dr's to make money. Very good Dr's are getting harder to find these days unfortunately and rare treasures when we do! ✌❤ Blessings to you 🙏

I suffer as well from this I believe. I have middle back and shoulder blade pain from overuse of my arms. Also a screwed up neck from numerous car accidents and a horseback riding incident. The pain just recently started shooting up the side of my neck into my jaw. No fun. I am praying for everyone(including myself🙏🏻) for healing. God sees our pain. Praying we all get the help we need, a miracle or for that blessed hope to arrive and take us out of this world so full of pain. God be with us all.

@@marcomarco3487 I would suggest going to a good chiropractor and getting an X-ray to see if you have some ribs dislocated. He said this can happen with severe coughing. (I had Covid pneumonia pretty bad) The one I go to told me I had quite a few out and that can cause a lot of issues with breathing and many people go to the ER when they could have just gotten a good adjustment. The video mentioned posture, too. I recently discovered I have anterior pelvic tilt which can translate to really bad posture (emphasizes hip flexor and lower back muscles). If you have poor posture it can escalate to upper back pain and tension headaches. Posterior pelvic tilt engages your abs and glutes and, therefore, relieves the pain in your lower back and hip flexors.
Watching a video on anterior pelvic tilt (along with some THC 😉) can really alleviate the pain.

Also I would like everyone to know that I got help from a special type of physical therapist who does something that's called strain counterstrain. It's a relatively new field and they can go in and release the contracted fascia manually. It is not travell trigger point work. It is something completely different. It's absolutely amazing if you have any serious problem with fascia you should look up a specialist in the strain counterstrain field and see them.

This is very clearly explained in a way that anyone can understand it very much appreciate that. But it doesn't speak to the fact that myofascial pain can be caused by an illness such as Lyme disease which you acquire from a Lyme tick also known as a deer mouse tick also known as a deer tick. It's actually the white foot a deer mouse that carries these diseases and these ticks can be as tiny as a pepper flake. And you may or may not get a bull's-eye rash. You could get around rash or a kidney-shaped rash without an outer ring and never have any clue what in the world caused it. Also if a person were to develop a serious internal infection in their kidneys or intestines someplace inside the body where it was becoming presepsis or sepsis. Some people's immune system will do its best to lock down and trap the infection all over the body in pockets. It's excruciatingly painful and it's very crippling.

Dry needling is an effective, non-pharmacological treatment of MTrPs which has approached acceptance as the “standard of practice” for deactivating active MTrPs. It may be performed using either a superficial or deep dry needling technique. Elicitation of one or more local twitch responses (LTRs) is a goal of dry needling and often benefits those with pain secondary to MTrPs. Though the mechanism of an LTR is unknown, studies suggest a biochemical component. Five minutes after the induction of a single LTR, our group found a dramatic change in the biochemical milieu of the upper trapezius muscle. Within minutes of the LTR, the initially elevated levels of SP and CGRP within the active MTrP drastically decreased to levels approaching that of normal uninvolved muscle tissue. The reduction of these
biochemicals in the local muscle area may be due to a small, localized increase in blood flow and/or nociceptor and mechanistic changes associated with an augmented inflammatory
response[17, 18]. Though not designed as a treatment intervention, the results of these studies are provocative in that the substances analyzed are known to be associated with sensitization, persistent pain, and spinal facilitation. In an animal model, it appears that dry needling may, in fact, activate the descending inhibitory pain system and cause local deactivation of the MTrP[35].

Acupuncture...dry needling is an acupuncture technique. It is within theoretical and technical approaches within acupuncture models. Over 90% of trigger points correspond to known acupuncture points. If you choose to have DN done, please make sure the practitioner is properly trained! Most PT's, DC's, DO's, and even MD's have minimal training. Seriously consider a board certified Acupuncturist who regularly utilizes this particular technique - it IS a specialized technique and not all Acupuncturists use it, BUT they DO have much more knowledge and experience in needling the body than most of the practitioners previously listed. And incorporating meridian theory along with DN will improve the outcome. PT's and LMTs are a great addition to the approach, as all have something unique to offer.

if it really if muscle pain, you can treat this your self with a firm rubber ball, and a wall. You can fix the knots yourself by rolling the ball into your sore area. I have the ball between my shoulders and back and the wall and just move side to side, to get rid of the pain. It has worked wonders

I've had the dry needling. Needles are inserted all over and an electric charge is applied to them, causing the muscle to contract/relax. Much like in biology class when they did it with a dead frog, causing the frog muscles to contract/relax. The insertion of the acupuncture needles does not hurt at all and actually feels good. Only inserted at the tips. Dry needling is highly effective but rarely offered anywhere. The only drawback to it is that it is no more lasting 'cure' than anything else is. And it is required to be done in a hospital room, so you get charged for the hospital room cost by the greedy.

@B. L. I'm so sorry. Yes, i've heard many such stories of people being much worse after surgery. I always tell people to go to a chiropractor first, and not just one, since some are just as lousy as any doctor. A sports chiro is best. Also exercise trainers often know a great deal about how a body works and how one part of thekinetic chain affects another. You must be so exhausted, asa i'm guessing you don't sleep much. Just know that you are not alone.

This is so interesting! I never thought that there would be a syndrome for what I have been experiencing ever since being 16 years old. I found few years ago a physiotherapist that did myofascial treatment and trigger points and so far it has been the only thing that has helped the headaches, back issues in several places. My therapist always wonders what I have done to my back after 4-6 weeks I have visited him and myofascia is always very glued to mt muscles. I do exercises but unfortunately it doesn't fix the problem.

My # therapist specializes with Nerves she knows all about them all the miles of them and has studied all over the world! It took me five years to find her, and they were trying to tell me my first opinion that I had to tendinitis then it was an impingement on the nerves. She has a special way of pulling back the layers of the onion to then there for a get in there and manipulate these triggerpoints with a tool after I have done my stretches! And first you need to heat your body and then you have to cool it down when you’re all done with ice packs I do this every day without fail now that I am in therapy, and it may take me over a year to figure or to get this all calmed down because there’s too many nerves involved!
