Chris Jeffries and Mike from Turn Leftist discuss how the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Western banks have debt-trapped Kenya, leading to widespread protests. The IMF's austerity measures, privatization, and deregulation policies have disproportionately affected the poorest segments of society, causing significant economic hardship and social unrest. Jeffries challenges the common perception that China is the only country engaging in debt trap diplomacy in Africa and defends African leaders who resist Western colonialism. The speaker also discusses the contentious relationship between the IMF and countries like Argentina, Ukraine, and Kenya, and the economic hardships and social unrest caused by the IMF's austerity measures. Jeffries argues that in countries where right-wing ideologies and gun ownership are prevalent, there is a higher likelihood of fascist forces prevailing, and expresses skepticism towards international development initiatives backed by the IMF. Mike also critiques the historical involvement of Western powers in conflicts around the world, arguing that their interventions were not always driven by humanitarian concerns or defensive measures.

Actually China is doing that itself - last year was the lowest investment of China in Africa in 2 decades. There are many reasons for that: 1) China is unlikely to lend more money to African Nations while they are struggling to pay back existing loans. 2) China has defaulted on debt it owes America. 3) China has big financial problems at home and 4) with the realignment of interests with Russia, China can get most of it's critical materials from Russia and doesn't need Africa as much.

Just returned from Kenya last Tuesday. We noted that many young and middle aged Kenyan men are just sitting around along the roads in almost all the towns and villages we pass by. We asked our Maasai driver who told us that those people are waiting for jobs and most of these jobs are only the day and not long term. Kenyans are English educated and many of them are graduates and are driving Uber Bolt to earn a living. Our driver for our Nairobi day tour, a young lady was very informative and she came from Mombasa to work driving tourists and locals around. She is a graduate and said Kenyan parents saves and forego many things just so that their children gets a better education. The financial bill was very unpopular as it increases tax and removing food subsidies for the children in schools when many children go to school because they get to have a meal and we can understand why the Kenyans demonstrated. I wish the Kenyans a better government and a better life.

      I'm Kenyan,old as independent Kenya ,now 61.
We Kenyans and our leaders are to largely blame for not being independent in mind and in doing our things.
I hope you saw the massive unutilised land in Kenya, which should be the food basket for half of the world but nothing happens.
The young men you saw standing on roadsides expect white color jobs, very few want to think for themselves and be creative.
The few farm produces especially the easily perishables hardly reach the end users. There are no proper handling ,storage and processing of those produces.Mangoes, avocados and others decay in large quantities.
Why can't our young men use their education to transform that sector!
We got hardwood but still import chairs from china etc.
Our rivers are dirty and contaminated. What openings can come if the waters were clean and properly maintained!
As long as we remain a consumer population without much engagement on manufacture,we shall lose the battle.
Our founding president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta advised Kenyans "Turudi mashambani" to return to the Farms, but instead we left the farms to towns.
We are now more trapped in the debts ,we may succumb.
The western education may not be working well for independent African countries.

You might have missed the underlying cause for that: In 1880 the population of the land mass that would become Kenya was estimated at about 1 million people with an average life-span of only 25 years. Urbanisation and westernisation transformed Kenya and the population is now 55 million with an average lifespan of 65 years! I think the average age of Kenyans is in the low 20s. Jobs and an economy that provides them has always been the end-goal hampered primarily by corruption and bad management. Having said that Kenya is by far (in my biased opinion) the most promising and blessed country in Africa.

So why then despite Chinese loans only comprising 17% of total national debt is the repayment of those loans the 2nd largest item of expenditure in the government budget. That is the definition of crippling - and your tangible infrastructure benefit (railway) was heavily dependant on its' extended use. Both Tanzania and Uganda pulled out of it because they saw what was happening to Kenya and didn't want to be lumped with crippling debt. Chinese loans occur primarily during the Kenyatta (Uhuru) years - the National Dept at the start of that period of governance was 1.5T KSh and the end of that period it is 9T KSh and Kenya was then in the position of having to (loan to) pay back just interest alone on that debt of 3B KSh per day.

In France's case, I don't think it is about Africa owing them because the countries they deal with are required to deposit at least 50%, maybe more, of their revenue with France's Treasury. That money is then loaned back to them with interest. French companies also get first dibs at any contracts, such as mining, with those countries. So France was basically killing African leaders who did not want to continue such a colonial relationship.

For instance, in Kenya, the auditor general has pointed out that since 2010, the government has borrowed KSH 1.1 trillion, which cannot be accounted for, yet the loans were secured for projects. The problem with us Africans is we do not face our devils (the politicians) but rather blame individuals who have nothing to do with our self-governance.

China's loans to African countries typically come with fewer conditions compared to those from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF often requires borrowing nations to implement market liberalization and austerity measures, which can be politically and socially challenging[3]. In contrast, Chinese loans are generally more flexible and focus on infrastructure projects without demanding significant economic policy changes[3][4]. This makes Chinese loans more attractive to some African governments, especially those looking to avoid the stringent conditions imposed by traditional Western lenders[2].

The country is so expansive now, even for Brazilians, it has become expensive to visit, I cant imagine for Argentinians.
This is the IMF deal with Milei: urgent cuts, no matter what.
I mean, It was obvious Argentine government had to prioritize and cut money expending, but the way it is being done is CRIMINAL.
You guys from USA and Europe, look for local News channels, the western mainstream media is not showing the Famine the lower class in Argentina is sinking into, not only hunger, but lots of people can't afford to continue medical treatment as health subsidies were abruptly cut.
One of the BIGGEST joys of Brazilians is that we paid EVERYTHING we owe to these exploiters, and one of the things that could ruin a politician's career in the last decades.. is to propose, even remotely, to take 1 dollar loan from IMF 😂

It’s never too late. Thank God we are among few who have found out and dared to oppose a wrong. In the future we should have an economist who knows how world politics is all about and understand how to build without dumping the whole country to the wolves. Love 🇰🇪 my country

You fail to mention how the country got into debt. Did imf approach them or did the leadership of the country approach imf?

I’m 52 hoping to end the rat race by 60 with above $1M. I know money is a liability to be exchanged for assets with real value like real estate (properties for rent) stocks (dividends) bonds (interest) But, what is it with bitcoin? I hear a lot about it and I'd love to diversify my portfolio.

The key is diversification. Personally, I delegate my investing to an advisor, cos my job doesn't permit the time to perform market analysis myself. Thankfully, my once ago stagnant portfolio has now 5X in barely 4 years, summing up almost 7 figure as of today.

Lesson of the video: don’t borrow money you don’t have.

    • @HomelessRomantic
      @HomelessRomantic  День тому

Saying "don't borrow money you don't have" is an oversimplification of the complex dynamics surrounding IMF lending practices. Here's why:
      1. Last resort lender: The IMF acts as a lender of last resort for countries in financial distress. These nations often have no other options for obtaining loans, making the "don't borrow" advice impractical.
      2. Structural issues: Countries seeking IMF assistance typically face deep-rooted economic problems. The loans are meant to address structural failures that led to the crisis, not just provide temporary relief.
      3. Conditionality: IMF loans come with strict conditions, including structural adjustment programs. These often require significant economic reforms, which can be politically and socially challenging to implement.
      4. Sovereignty concerns: Critics argue that IMF conditions can infringe on a country's economic sovereignty, forcing them to adopt policies that may not be in their best long-term interests.
      5. Debt cycle: Some argue that IMF loans and conditions can trap countries in a cycle of debt and dependency, as the required reforms may not always lead to sustainable economic growth.
      6. Changing creditor landscape: The rise of alternative lenders, like China, has complicated the global lending environment, making it harder for countries to avoid potentially predatory loans.
      7. Complex financial instruments: Modern debt instruments are increasingly complex, making it difficult for countries to fully understand the implications of their borrowing.
