  • Decades ago, cave divers realized that in case of a catastrophic failure or an out of gas scenario they had to travel through possible restrictions and further than in openwater.
It became the norm to practice S drills before any dive.
Aside of practicing for an OOG emergency, divers would also practice touch contact, light management and positioning but were also checking if all regulators were functional and the longhose (was) available and deployable before the actual dive.
The S drill mimics reality, it is good way to prepare divers to respond efficiently to an unfortunate event such as running out of gas.
Apart from the way and sequence how to perform these S drills you can also observe the 2 divers using a repertoire of finkicks including the helicopter turn and the backkick, necessary to perform this skill properly.
Things like changing the light from one hand to the other, switching regs without losing neutral buoyancy, clipping off regulators, positioning yourself adequately and team awareness are all being practiced during this skill.
We decided to put this video online in order to give sidemount divers detailed information about how to perform and practice an S drill.
We hope that this will contribute towards making SM divers even more aware, skilled and reliable divers.
MOVEMENTS AND POSITIONING IN THIS VIDEO ARE EXAGGERATED IN ORDER TO SHOW BOTH DIVERS ON YOUR SCREEN, SHOW THE ROUTING OF THE HOSES AND TO SHOW YOU THE IMPORTANCE OF A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH OF THIS SKILL.
We have 2 divers in which one diver acts as the RECEIVER and the second one as the DONOR.
Each diver should practice the skill being a receiver and a donor
In order to memorize each part and sequence the S drills are divided in :
3 phases and in this video 4 exit strategies.
The exit strategies are based on the type of environment and amount of gas available.
Phase 1 is the actual emergency - STARTS with OOG signalling and ENDS with the OK signal
phase 2 is the evaluation - STARTS with deploying the longhose ENDS with a directional signal
Phase 3 is the exit - STARTS with 2 divers positioning ENDS with the 2 divers exiting.
4 exits with a donor on the left, on the right, single file and an ascent face to face.
NOTE : We can also observe the divers exiting single file in SM configuration, There are still divers out there that insist that a single file exit on a 2 meter longhose on sidemount is not possible.
Another myth in the diving community seems to be that it is very difficult and dangerous to use a helmet due to the fact the longhose might get stuck behind the helmet.
We performed these S dills many times and until the day of today we have not encountered this problem.
S drills are not easy, they are a challenge but good fun to practice.
    We enjoyed it ;-)

This upload is years old but still gold. I just got my sidemount cert and the s drill is definitely an important skill to master. Thank you for this 🙏🏾

Great demonstration of this procedure from different angles. I personally use two long hoses, so it doesn’t matter which tank I donate from, but always donate the reg I’m breathing from regardless, because that’s the exact reg a real out of air diver will go for. Other than that, this is the same methodology I teach in my own sidemount courses. It’s nice to have a demo to show beforehand. ☺️👍🏻

Great skill demo guys. Loved the "wrong" way touch at the end. Very clear execution for the skills, and presents very well on the video. Keep that up and you will have a multi lingo teaching aid in the class room.

Hi Tomasz. Great demo as usual.I'm just back from a brilliant week diving in Scotland. I used the X deep cell over my Diamond cell with great success and wasnt restricted during the wreck dives. Cheers. Mike

hey, thanks for this video, it helps me in training. But my instructor feels strange when I doing s drill with him, on the details of touch signal to his arm after choosing exit direction. He told me that I am confuse about cave diving 0 viz OOA exit skill to open water OOA exit skill. In open water environment viz is clear two divers should swim side by side using eye and hand contact when exit instead of touch signal. Can you please help me by explain? Thanks

    Perfect fast answer!
I dive it just like u said it.
Normally you should be able to unclip it as you said it need a but practice of course.
I changed it (attaching an O-ring on the hose) because i had a critical situation. It was under control but I thought this solution would be smarter for the future for me because you never no (cold fingers or stress)

hi tomasz, first of all nice Video. good Details.
good visibility and nice dive Destination.
I would like to see these drill also with unclipping the Long hose while breathing out of the left tank (neckbungee)
that would be the only Thing to add on this very nice and informationell Video.
thanks you and all other "actors/divers/cameras" for taking the time to do this Video.
    best wishes from Germany

Dennis Röckrath First of all thanks for your comment. In an emergency you do not need to unclip the long hose. the boltsnap should be attached to the longhose with an oring and plastic cable strap so that you can break the oring with ease. For obvious reasons while practising I always unclip it. The lack of the part you are asking for in the vid is caused by this video already being too long.
