I do not have a gaming setup except for my ROG Ally, and I absolutely love it and use it daily. I know that the ROG Ally is not the best fit for everyone, but if you have kids and you want to game along it is great.
Some people buy rog ally steam deck and legion go all 3 for no reason and they don’t even touch it they just show off . So one product not used better than 4 products not used
Most of your 'issues' with the ROG Ally isn't a fault of the device itself but Windows or other software like EA or user error. So what's the problem here with the Rog Ally specifically? Fan noise you can adjust your own fan curves in the Armoury Crate software. If you're wanting a portable console experience a Steam Deck is the way to go but that is severely underpowered and you'll have to experience Linux.
These “issues” aren’t exactly the reason why I regret buying the thing. I just simply don’t use it anymore basically. In other words, if I was to use this device more, I can put up with the issues I’ve stated. Idk, maybe someday this device will be useful again.
I humbly disagree with you. The Steam Deck isn't severely underpowered it's just not as powerful as the ROG Ally due to a slightly older chipset, but it's a very well supported chipset. It plays almost everything I want it to, maybe not at a full 60 or 90 fps on all games, but it plays at an very acceptable framrate for a mobile pc device. It's very well designed and optimized for battery life and playing on the go; so I don't expect it to replace my PlayStation or my Desktop PC in terms of performance. Steam OS is amazing, and a major selling point for me, so in my opinion you don't HAVE TO, you GET TO experience Linux! Don't get me wrong I like the ROG Ally and some of the competitors, but despite not being the most powerful device I truly believe it's the best device right now, and Windows is a huge part of the reason for that. One last thing to point out is that the Steam Deck and Linux community support is amazing and another thing that greatly increases the life of the device itself. The more people that use Linux the harder it is for Windows game developers to ignore its existence, and the next version going to be that much better.
@Lugnut2002 this is 100% true, I could never get sick of the steam deck, its just too amazing, windows it's what holds these handhelds back for me, the steam deck is the best and obvious choice, most people ik don't even know of the ally, but they love the steam deck, steam deck is superior in every way that matters
The way people ruin their own good points by exaggerating is hilarious "Severly underpowered" Absolutely nonsense. The Steam Deck has less power, that's fact. but has more than enough power to run Triple A titles up to around 2018 at very good frame rates and medium settings. "Have to deal with Linux" lol How about "Have to deal with the absolute chaotic mess that is Windows" an OS that was never built for handhelds.
I just sold my z1e. Had it since release. Very nice device but not using as it should. It's meant to be mobile. I only played it at home. I also have every console and my wife had a pc. I had no need for it.
True, this is exactly how I feel about my Ally right now. At home, it doesn’t get used at all. Outside of home, most likely not to be used either. On trips, sure, but that’s rare.
I recently got the ROG ally and I also got a xg mobile 3080 to pair it with. The cost was pretty steep, but was able to get it way cheaper than retail. It has replaced my desktop pc and outperforms it. Not a huge feat considering it was a 5 year old pc and mid tier at the time. With the dock, the ally is night and day and runs flawlessly. The versatility to take it on the go as well has been amazing.
Great video bro. I'll be honest I've felt similar to you with PC gaming at times. Every handheld PC gaming device has their Pros and Cons. I have played with the ROG several times and planned on getting one but decided to wait and see what issues it had, and after decided not to get it. I currently am gaming on PC and on the Steam Deck OLED. OLED is great where I do play some older titles, switch games, and some indies. I can play those on road trips with no issues and more demanding titles at home on PC. I still might pick up an ally in the future just to tinker with it once the price drops more but handheld PC gaming is definitely not for everyone. It's cool to see someone being real with themselves and what they want for their personal gaming needs. Maybe one day you'll be more into it.
I’m absolutely in love with my Ally, but I respect ur reasoning wasn’t “the Ally is trash and xyz other handheld clears”. Some people gaming styles just don’t match the Ally. Specifically if you prefer playing games at max power on ur PC or PS5. I have a PS5, but I’ve been playing it less and less due to my Ally. My Ally is essentially there for me to play any type of game anytime that may be in my backlog. Whether it’s a big AAA, Switch games, indies, or competitive games, I can play them all at the touch of a button
Agreed my Xbox series x is collecting dust theres just so much more power in the ally especially when connected to xg mobile only thing that sucks is the bugs n having to reset the device occasionally
I think we can use our Ally's as like a console with the tv. Like a super portable windows pc console which we can also use as a handheld when we want to like the switch.😊
I have SX and PS5 but my main computer is a Mac so I was looking for something that I could play windows games or MnK shooters that has no support for MnK on consoles and for that the Ally do the job just fine, I plug into the dock and all my peripherals are already connected to a hub with an USB switch so I can move from the Ally to my console with one click, it’s brilliant. But the best part of it is for emulation on the go, you can run using really low wattage and the battery last quite long and paired with a good power bank you can have a blast. Runs all the way to switch, ps3 and so on, plenty of power for it. I feel your issues but maybe your needs are more directed to a gaming laptop than a handheld, you will definitely have a better time with a laptop, but to be honest most of the problems you mentioned is related to windows in general, so although the laptop will be better in some areas, any issues based on windows will remain.
I have the Ally, Steam Deck, and Legion Go. The Legion Go is my favorite, followed by my Steam Deck. I use both according to specific use cases. I gave my nephew my Ally because I don't have a use case for it, as the Legion and Deck have each covered.
I love my legion go but I’m new to PC gaming I’m playing #MK1 invasions mode & it’s telling me to hold button 9/M to continue, I don’t know where that button is 😭😭😭
@@Mike_Jones281 thanks man. I do appreciate that. I heard on some videos some high pitch noise and that would drive me mad. If it is the same. Then it is perfect. Thank you
I also bought a new gaming laptop, but guess what I don't use it much for gaming. Why? I literally work 50 hrs a week in IT consulting and rest of the time I create content. The device isn't the issue, it's our life.
I feel the same with my Steam Deck buying it earlier this year..... it also doesn't help that I now have a new gaming laptop since I still prefer gaming on a bigger screen.
Lol, all of the pros were basically cons. Thanks for your honest review, I've been thinking about getting one, I expect I'd mostly use it in the house while streaming from my main PC and then on the occasional long journeys i take. But the more I think about it, the more I think it would be completely pointless to spend that much money on something that I can game for an hour on long journeys and use meters away from my PC. I do have a switch, which to be fair kept me pretty sane on the few long-haul 10 hour flights I was on this year. Red Dead Redemption and Doom, both at like 30fps, but the thing lasted a huge amount of my flight time. I know this would be a bad purchase, but 99% of reviews are positive, and you know for sure that most of these shills stuck that shit in a draw and haven't used it in months.
interesting take. I regtetted getting the Oled deck and returned it. the LCD deck i had since launch frustrated me more fhan not lately. the ally w the xg mobile has been a godsend for my gaming. it is defo more involved than the deck but stuff at least playable.
I use it 80% in handheld mode with the mobile 2023 and it works great for my couch setups. Unreal performance like 60 locked on remnant 2 on ultra. docked same thing on 1080p but on 4K need to dial it down a little to get stable 60FPS both on bg3 and remnant and work through DLSS. I have the 2023 one and I do love it. playing docked on the TV takes some setup to be able to navigate all just with a controller. It's the typical PC experience - takes some time to setup but then it works and is amazing.
That’s crazy that regretted buying the OLED deck the OLED screen looks amazing and the improvement they made from the original deck are a great addition they definitely made a decent mid gen refresh
not when I spend 700 bucks on it for what amounts to the same performance and limitations. While the OLED screen looks great obviously you get used to it quickly and the novelty wears off. the games I like to play just don't run well on either deck and my SD deck is now a DosBox basically which is fantastic with the track pad. Will see how the ally fares as a travel companion soon enough.
Not to be rude but, it sounds like to me you didn't do much research before purchasing the ally. When I was making the purchasing decision between an ally and a steamdeck, I decided to avoid the rog ally because I didn't want to have to do deal with the issues of a windows based handheld device, and instead opted for the much more stressfree and console like expereience of the steamdeck with the cost of performance. I bought the steamdeck knowing that it most likely wouldn't be able to play modern AAA games, but with those expectations set I fell in my love with my steamdeck for what it is, a device I can bring with me anywhere and play at least 90% of my steam gaming library stress free. To me it sounds like you regret buying the Ally because it wasn't wat you expected which is unfortunate, as I believe this area of gaming is amazing so i hope you haven't given up on it entirely. Great video btw, love the b-roll with the drone shots
No I didn’t. I literally bought it on launch day & I found out about the Ally a few days before launch. It’s not a bad device at all despite some of my “issues” I’ve. If only I used it more, I wouldn’t be regretting my purchase. Edit: major typo 😂
Most things are typical PC gaming shortcomings. The Fans are loud but my OG Steam Deck is worse. I love gaming on my Ally on the couch or anywhere in my house. I’m a tinkerer and quite enjoy windows now even though I’m a Mac and UNIX guy by heart.
I love my Ally. However, it's nice to see someone just being real and normal, and talking about their experience off the cuff. Fingerprint scanner works really well for me. But I can see why some people find it annoying.
I do appreciate Asus having the fingerprint scanner. Since this device is only used for gaming, I don’t mind having a security flaw. I should be “fine” if it ever goes missing.
Arent you afraid of this someday failling after 2 years warranty? Due to the biggest con of it being the ram is soldered onto the motherboard. I aint fan of in general newer consumer electronics when things like ram are soldered onto the motherboard
3.5 is same exact thing as 3 its only clocked 100mhz higher and runs a tiny but cooler its still using 780m graphics. The one to wait for is rdna 4 known as Strix point. That's the one that will be the major step up. Its supposed to be due out summer of 2024. The rumor is its comparable to a rtx 3060 in terms of performance.
Really great video. Just got my OLED deck and I'm really enjoying it. I rarely touched my LCD deck. I only play rpgs and indie games on it and I feel it really isn't made for AAA games. I was debating on possibly picking up an Ally or Legion Go after Christmas. Just curious, are you around the Allentown PA area?
I have the oled deck and the ally. The ally is more powerful but you get 60-75 mins out of a full charge. Oled deck is far more practical in so many places, I don’t think buying an ally after owning an oled deck makes much sense.
The main reason why I chosen the Ally over the Desk is because I’m able to play Xbox Game Pass Games. The thing is tho, I don’t play that many games from Game Pass😂😂. I think I might just buy the games I play from Game Pass. I get tired of having subscriptions sometimes.
seems about right lol im in my 30's and dont see my self ever stop gaming but i've seen plenty who once they hit past their 30's/40's, gaming starts to become less engaging it's how it is, nothing to feel ashamed for
I've decided to sell my ROG Ally since I don't use it anymore. Here's the follow up video I said I was going to make. This video will be available for viewing at 3:00am EST (December 4th) when it's done uploading. ua-cam.com/video/hZBmxl8dyY8/v-deo.html
Bruh.. 😑 change your title to: "NO longer a Gamer and not into handhelds" Don't just crap on one product , when infact you Don't also care for the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. The real reason is you lost passion for gaming. Which is okay if you no longer want to be a gamer and focus on other productive real things.
Bruh, I’m not shitting on the Ally. I regret buying it because I don’t even use it anymore basically. I can put up with the “issues” I’ve stated. If I was to use the Ally more, I wouldn’t mind keeping it around, but it’s just collecting dust at this point. No device is perfect & I’m willing to put with it. It just doesn’t have a purpose for me anymore.
@@SiGuy_YT here's another title : I'm Not a gamer no more, selling my Rog Ally" There issue solved. You can easily sale the Ally for $500 and let someone else enjoy it. Instead of letting such a great device collect dust.
@@SiGuy_YT tech value goes down quick through time my dude. You don't need it, just sale it and let someone else have fun with it. Just see it this way, It's a Win Win, for you and the buyer. You can use that extra money you get back on your PC. For a better mic, cam ect..
I feel like everyone is regreting buying tech these days because you are paying way more than the tech is actually worth. I mean in australia you will pay $1300 AUD for the ally and its just not worth it for what your getting.
@@SiGuy_YT Yeh understandable. I feel like when they can make a handheld where we reach at least 90frames on all games then it will be worth it and people will be going crazy for it.
@@SiGuy_YTI am planning to bring the ally for long flights like 16 hr flight and I don't think I'd be able to game on max power for at least 8 hrs just with a powerbank. I was hoping you tried it. Thank you
I feel this video in my soul. I have a really bad habit of buying products, which are mostly tech, that i think will make me happy. I got my rog ally like... 8 hours ago. The device is amazing. Its so cool to have windows 11 in a handheld. I got it all set up, fired up devil may cry 5 and started playing. My first thought was "Wow, this is so neat, this is so cool!" After about 45 minutes to an hour i then thought to myself "man this would be so cool if this was 4k 120 hz, at max settings, also my neck is kind of starting to hurt from looking down at this thing". I look at my high end pc, and my tv with exactly those specs, and back to my rog ally and lastly thought "*Sigh* why did i do this". Im going to see if i can return it, and try to learn a lesson from this.
Dude is sitting in a beanie, a hoodie, headphones and is complaining that a handheld device is not as powerful/good as a stationary PC 😅 Most of your cons are Windows related, not because the device is bad or something like that.
@@SiGuy_YT Dude you must be hot asf in this outfit 😂 Yeah I know, good device but it needs A LOT of patience and Windows is not making it easy. I love mine, but I do understand your opinion. Peace!
To each his/her own I guess, I love my Ally even if the battery is not great and the micro SD issue. I can play all my games and the updates didn't solve the issues but the experience makes it better. Don't like the SD due to underpower but maybe looking into adding an SD OLED for retro games. LGG is great but its too bulky for me and retro games don't look great in big screen and too many buttons. So again to each his own.
I wanted to try the Steam Deck OLED but feel like I won’t even use after the honeymoon phase lol. yeah, playing games on the go is not actually my style anymore I guess.
Bro, i am the opposite. After 6 Months i can tell you Rog Ally i forget about ps5 and laptop. You need configurr the fan with customize profile with Armony Create. Rog Ally is the best device I never buied. Much better the Ally i can play everywhere. I don't have the time to play on the desk. It is very limited
I agree with you but yes games on PC WILL NOT LOOK the same on the ROG I feel like it’s a great device for small demanding games that are easy to play without a mouse and keyboard I just got the LEGION GO and men I’m loving it I knew that it wouldn’t play games like my PC but if you have a list of small games like indies or low demanding games your all set I tweaked my LEGION GO and trust me I can get over 3 hours out this thing.
True, I know the Ally won’t play like my PC. That’s not the problem. The problem is that I really don’t use it anymore ever since I bought my PC last month. I do have some games that run great on the Ally, like Need 4 Speed. Honestly, I think I enjoy playing racing games on the Ally more than any other games.
Honestly I disagree. I got my ROG Ally few days ago and it's pretty impressive. Yeah trying to run xbox and steam games can be a pain in the ass. I can't figure out how to update armory ether and I already download it. but for emulation it's perfect. I can run on silent mode with full fps from upto xbox360 to nitendo switch. And honestly no I haven't messed with softwares settings much. But for me I got 4 hours of playing games and they ran beautiful. I highly recommend a emulation software like retrobat or emudeck and try it out. You can still get PC games running smoothly on there. Definitely tweak with it and take some time with it. Imma try cyberpunk on PC to see how smooth it can be. ANd the biggest tip i can give is to run emulators better, tweak each settings. Emulation is were to go with gaming. And free. 😊
I do appreciate what the Ally can do, however I just don’t use it anymore at this point in time. It’s a great device but I don’t use the poor thing anymore. That’s the core reason why I regret buying it. I’m on the verge of selling it but idk, I feel like I will want it again someday. We will see.
I like the Ally & all, but it’s just sitting around & I don’t even use it as much as I thought I would. I’m still debating if it’s best to sell it or keep it. Honestly, if I traveled more, maybe it would be a good fit. Update: Now the AMD XG Mobile is in stock for purchase literally after making this video, wth 😂
“I couldn’t play need for speed because I needed to be online with EA’s launcher” This is quite literally why I download a cracked copy of the game even after purchasing it because I hate having to connect online and if I forget at the airport to do offline mode or it doesn’t support it then I’m fucked, not to mention Windows is already a resource hogging OS which is what makes devices fan speeds sound like a jet and add to that all these launchers which is even more resource hogging and will drain battery faster too. It’s so annoying having to download cracked games for something I paid for because of these stupid lousy reasons but I guess that’s what it is right now with portable pc gaming
EA is definitely the worst launcher I’ve used. If I decide to keep it around, I might have to do that. As for fans, well I guess I just have to deal with it. It would be nice if the fans didn’t run when not needed. Some of Asus’s laptops actually turn their fans off after some time, the G14 2022 to be exact.
on the off chance you actually see this comment.... wanna sell your ally? i've been debating grabbing one, i have an lcd steamdeck and an oled steamdeck... kinda want the z1 extreme too.
yeah, I actually might sell. I’m still debating right now but I’ll make a decision soon. I’ll be making a follow up video today or tomorrow so I’ll let you know. Edit: typo
just sell it, is not for you because windows tinkering is too much for you and some issue is game related that have nothing to do with the ally that problem will still exist on laptop or desktop pc. stick with console like nintendo switch no more tinkering for you
“Windows Tinkering” is not even a problem for me. Did you even watch the video? I have no problem dealing with windows, but it can be annoying. The “problem” with me having the Ally is that I don’t even use it anymore. I don’t have a use for it anymore.

Never had any latency issues on any of my wireless headsets on the Rog ally z1 extreme variant
Im waiting for rdna 3.5 APU's. The fact we are getting a revision of rdna 3 proves AMD weren't happy with the chipset
Yes, I’m around the Allentown area.
My bad about the late reply, some comments don’t show up at all on my feed or very late notifications.
The main reason why I chosen the Ally over the Desk is because I’m able to play Xbox Game Pass Games. The thing is tho, I don’t play that many games from Game Pass😂😂. I think I might just buy the games I play from Game Pass.
I get tired of having subscriptions sometimes.
That’s why we buy something with 32GB or more of RAM when there is an APU involved.
For entry level gamers, I would say Steam Deck is very pick up and play.
Oh no it's not 😅 Linux is a nightmare
@@Hotcatfish1 don’t let the steam deck fanboys hear you saying that.
Definitely not. Gotta tweak all the proton stuff before playing
@@undisturbed809 haha I love my steam deck but it's a nightmare at the same time!
Interesting. So far I haven't made any changes other than add Decky and some boot animations. Seems like not everyone had that experience
You make high quality videos
I know exactly who this is😂😂
Lil bro is just getting old and is done with gaming 😂
probably true
seems about right lol
im in my 30's and dont see my self ever stop gaming
but i've seen plenty who once they hit past their 30's/40's, gaming starts to become less engaging
it's how it is, nothing to feel ashamed for
I've decided to sell my ROG Ally since I don't use it anymore. Here's the follow up video I said I was going to make.
This video will be available for viewing at 3:00am EST (December 4th) when it's done uploading.

Bruh.. 😑 change your title to: "NO longer a Gamer and not into handhelds"
Don't just crap on one product , when infact you Don't also care for the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.
@@SiGuy_YT here's another title : I'm Not a gamer no more, selling my Rog Ally"
There issue solved. You can easily sale the Ally for $500 and let someone else enjoy it. Instead of letting such a great device collect dust.
@@steverogers2524 well the thing is, I’m still debating if I want to sell it. Been thinking about it since October. We will see.
I mean in australia you will pay $1300 AUD for the ally and its just not worth it for what your getting.
damn that’s a lot. It’s not a bad product. I expected to use it more but I don’t use it at all anymore.
@@SiGuy_YT Yeh understandable. I feel like when they can make a handheld where we reach at least 90frames on all games then it will be worth it and people will be going crazy for it.
Have you tried plugging this on a plane's outlet and be able to play at max power?
Na, but my portable charger allows max power.
I mean that‘s exactly how I felt bout the ally when the Legion GO was announced lol
totally true dude, handhelds are just for trips with limited use that's why maybe Nintendo games are more suitable for that ....
Dude is sitting in a beanie, a hoodie, headphones and is complaining that a handheld device is not as powerful/good as a stationary PC 😅 Most of your cons are Windows related, not because the device is bad or something like that.
What’s wrong with the fit?😂 Jokes aside, the Ally is a great device, it’s just too bad I don’t use the poor thing anymore.
These issues you speak of are not ALL ally issues they’re windows issue
I love mine still emulating switch games has been awesome too
I agree with you but yes games on PC WILL NOT LOOK the same on the ROG I feel like it’s a great device for small demanding games that are easy to play without a mouse and keyboard I just got the LEGION GO and men I’m loving it I knew that it wouldn’t play games like my PC but if you have a list of small games like indies or low demanding games your all set I tweaked my LEGION GO and trust me I can get over 3 hours out this thing.
@@SiGuy_YT yeah racing games do look and run good an this handhelds that’s for sure.
Cool doesn’t mean I won’t use it much
I like the Ally & all, but it’s just sitting around & I don’t even use it as much as I thought I would.
I’m still debating if it’s best to sell it or keep it. Honestly, if I traveled more, maybe it would be a good fit.
Update: Now the AMD XG Mobile is in stock for purchase literally after making this video, wth 😂
lenovo legion go no delay with your airpods just micrefoon is trash with it
Damn that g14 sounds crazy
yeah, I bought a lot of them & they all had some problems.
I really wanted the G14 but the QC was not good.
Thinking of gettin one I got a 512 steam deck but I’m worried about that sd card shit
Steam deck doesn't have a sd card problem
@@abdealimerchant5708He meant that he was worried about the ROG Ally’s sd card problem. He was stating that he owned a 512gb Steam Deck.
Brother, If you look online they already fixed that issue in newer models
Just dont use it lol been having a joy with mine without touching it 👌🏿💯
Thanks guy I just ordered one right now!
on the off chance you actually see this comment.... wanna sell your ally? i've been debating grabbing one, i have an lcd steamdeck and an oled steamdeck... kinda want the z1 extreme too.
yeah, I actually might sell. I’m still debating right now but I’ll make a decision soon.
I’ll be making a follow up video today or tomorrow so I’ll let you know.
Edit: typo
@itsmessiahyo awesome! I'll keep an eye out for the vid.
Hello, I decided that I’m gonna sell this thing.
just sell it, is not for you because windows tinkering is too much for you and some issue is game related that have nothing to do with the ally that problem will still exist on laptop or desktop pc. stick with console like nintendo switch no more tinkering for you
“Windows Tinkering” is not even a problem for me. Did you even watch the video? I have no problem dealing with windows, but it can be annoying. The “problem” with me having the Ally is that I don’t even use it anymore. I don’t have a use for it anymore.
Its just me or the console is huge
well it’s smaller than the Steam Deck.
Dude sounds like an absolute casual
Is there anything wrong with that?
Windows is the reason to get this just use mouse and Keyboard
Me too regret
can i have yours please
its your fault not ally XD
make a script
Yeah, I will.
Wow such a time waste video lol
Lol
1st world probz.
