Chernobyl contaminated the soil in Europe about 100 times that of the U.S.A. The soil here is contaminated by Fukushima in the northwest, California, Oregon and Washington. The west coast of Canada and the whole northern border with the U.S. are still receiving fallout from Fukushima. You may want to look at some maps that will show you where the contamination is least. And get a Geiger counter for good measure.

Bil ~ what about container growing, like in XL whiskey barrels. Then you can control the soil. Is fallout still coming from rain clouds too?
