I just recently finished the books, and I got through the bittersweet ending. I also recall that Hissrich said that "Season 3 will be the closest to the books yet". Which is complete bollocks, because they can't really do time of contempt with the way the pieces of the story are currently layed out. Ciri would never trust Yennefer again after the events of season 2, and they've completely bypassed their time together in Melitele's temple which is where the two develop a Mother-daughter relationship. Because we saw Cahir capturing Ciri, his plot goes out the window of being just a naïve captain hoping to save his neck. Geralt would probably not trust Yennefer again after that mistake, and Codringher and Fen are already dead. All of the plot points of the book have been resolved, or otherwise bungled such that they are unusable. The only thing that could happen is the Coup on Thanedd, and Geralt's encounter with Vilgefortz. Which only happens if Geralt forgives Yennefer for essentially running off with Ciri and stealing her for her own gain.
Case in point, nothing (or at least very little of it) that the show has done has kept in line to the books. That's not all bad, and I will give credit where credit is due. The only problem I have is that its so far removed from the source material that it isn't even the same story. They should say that out of the gate. Heck, I'm halfway tempted to use the post from Hissrich as an excuse to write an essay about all of the ways Season 3 will either deviate from the books, or they took so much backlash, that they decided to stick strictly to it (Which they can't do)
The Netflix writers have pinned themselves here, and it doesn't seem likely that season 3 will do well, and ergo I don't suspect there will be a season 4. But you never know.
As a post script, I'd like to be wrong about this. I'd like it to be good, and I'm not just being negative for the sake of it. There are some good things about the show, Cavill's portrayal of Geralt being the most consistent one of them. For me, this show feels a lot like the Hobbit movies, where they added so much that the main story really just gets muddled down. Except here the main story is almost non-existant.

I wish they had acknowledged and respected how much the fan base appreciates Cavill and his approach. If they wanted a hit and rabid loyal fans, all they needed to do was take note and follow his lead to the promised land. What a tragic fumble. It seems like the producers and writers were just so impressed with their own "creativity" that they didn't have the attention span or capacity to recognize the value and appeal of the source material. No respect, bad effect. I hope that the huge profits that they've lost with their arrogant fumbling will provide the motivation for them to try to rethink everything. So much potential. I hate to see it end like this, just watching it slowly swirl down the toilet.

I am utterly disappointed even if my hopes were not high. All I wanted was a solid story that give us the chance to sympathise with some of characters and a nice portrayal of the ancient elven and dwarven civilisation.
All of this could have been an interesting opportunity for them to be as inclusive as they want and it wouldn’t have been a problem. A good storytelling does wonders.
I seriously doubt that the third season could make any justice and I believe that the things will only go worse from here on.. For me The Witcher series from Netflix ended with S2E1 and this is how I would like to remember the show. 😢

I do think it had some potential. I liked the misfit heroes we followed. The antagonists though were poorly written and were making strange decisions. If you cut all that stuff and focused more on the 7, I think it would have been way better. The only thing I liked about the empress is that she had some awesome makeup that I loved to look at instead of pay attention to what she would say (because nothing any of the antagonists say adds anything to the story lol). Idk why the Netflix shows love to try to explain everything. Half ass explaining a cosmic event like the conjunction takes away the mystery and what makes the world feel real. When you tell stories, you don’t need to have an explanation for everything - you also don’t need to know what the antagonists are always up to… this is one of the Netflix shows’ biggest flaw imo. Poorly attempted over explaining, and thus adding fluff that takes away from the storytelling. Kudos to those makeup artists & the actors.

Plus elven architecture and clothing is significantly different than humans and show doesn't show it that way (maybe they have there reasons IDK).. elven armor is more Mongolian type, they kinda didn't apply that elvish touch to the show. This show just reaffirmed my faith that the Show runners at Netflix believe action is more important to the viewed than good story telling.
I liked the fact that they tried to tell the “whole main story” in this season, but it was so rushed that it felt like I was watching the series on 1.5x speed even at regular pace.
Oh and small footnote, the trial of grasses has a 30% survival rate. And this is after having centuries to practice and perfect it.
You’re telling me a rag tooth band of misfits got it right in the first shot and the only side effect was that he couldn’t control it? I mean possible maybe but highly improbable if you ask me.. so this story is likely not the actual origin story of Witchers but rather some sensationalist version of it.

I've always considered that the true heart of The Witcher as a franchise is, and always will be, the simple concept of "The story of this ONE witcher in particular named Geralt of Rivia, the sorceress Yennefer and the child of destiny Ciri, the company they keep around them and the way they manage situations outside their control even against all odds."
I think that the original Witcher lore and world works so well because the worldbuilding was specifically designed to serve that particular concept and characters, not the other way around.
I don't think that The Witcher franchise needs to explain a lot of things in order to work, particularly things about the past could stay as ambiguous as they are and i bet not many people are gonna have a problem with it, i'm even willing to say the people who are confused and want more answers about the backstrory of the world feel this way particulary because recent Witcher media don't know when to stop trying to put patches on the plot and past events.
Maybe it's just me but the moment this show was announced as "Set 1,200 years before the birth of Geralt of Riv-" i immediately lost interest and i had to force myself to watch it just to have a fair opinion, the more they get away from the familiarity of the stablished characters and world the more they're likely to screw everything up. (The Vesimir anime being an understandable exception, since it's familiar enough)
My guess is that the reason Netflix is so obssessed with talking about the "origins" of everything is because they wanna hook the audience with this naive idea of "You like this thing, right? Well lucky you!! I have an explanation on how it started, that's appealing, right? If you like this thing so much surely you wanna know everything about it's origins right? The more characters and plot points from the source material we link to this cool thing we made the better you'll like it, right? We can take this thing you like and make you like it more!"
They're completely missing the point on what made the original story so appealing, but that's just my stinky opinion.

Initially when the Henry Cavil drama popped up i wanted Herny to come back as Geralt, but honestly now i wish he doesn't, not for Henry of course, but because that way Netflix's work on The Witcher will be a step closer to collapse on itself.
I think i've hit my breaking point too and now i don't really mind that much about what netflix does next, for all i care they could make a Witcher multiverse with 20 more prequels and new characters that somehow link everything together, in the end i highly doubt their work will ever be considered more canon than the games will lol (The games aren't canon as far as i'm concerned, but they sure feel like it)

I knew you wouldn't stay out of it! Thank you for this fair review and for not concentrating on things EVERYONE is talking about. I liked this one even better than the 2nd season tbh.
About making witchers. Well, this first one they obviously messed up. The celestial siblings were making it up as they went, mostly experimenting and improvising, it seems. They wrote little down and only the sister made it to the end of the season. In any case, I doubt she would be overly enthusiastic to pass this knowledge along, especially to humans. So the actual dh'oine makers of the real witchers (who can still be Alzur and Malaspina, by the way, they came by these ships apparently), have perhaps only bits of info, but enough time to perfect the procedure.
And Vesemir with Triss could be just plain wrong, they never actually tested their method and never made anything, the knowledge is lost and obscure by their time.
I'm grasping at straws here, trying to tie this whole "universe" together, when the show-runners don't give two fucks about consistency. But it's still explainable without too much of a stretch, unlike other things which are lost to logic forever..

Be it a movie, show, game, sport, school, whatever - it always has the same trends and earmarks, always, NO exceptions, it ALWAYS follows the same course. The Witcher was/is no different. The sooner the people burn those parasites at the stake the better.

Let's talk about the elephant in the room, Netflix is trying so hard to emphasize the "woke" qualities of the characters at the cost of creating a completely empty and meaningless TV series.
Netflix decided that the "woke" audiences would be more profitable than people who actually want to see a properly written show, and now we see the results.
As you said, I'm not even mad, I just don't care about it anymore, even if I played TW3 more than any other games and I'm a huge fan of the saga.

Why do they have to buy our beloved IPs to do their preaching then? I don't agree with you, I agree with Gary over at Nerdrotic, that they are intentionally doing this to OUR lores bc it destroys them. They could probably go find a bunch of fantasy or sci-fi novels (that none of us would ever read) that already has all their diversity and inclusion (but no meaningful story or character arcs) but they just keep crapping on our things. I hate the Left...we really shit the bed when we let them take over every aspect of our civilization beginning with indoctrination in schools and universities, in the media, and the internet.

@@allhopeabandon7831 nha, I think they want the cake and eat it too. they want a good novel with a lot of fans so they have a good starting base, then they want to extend the audience to people who were not interested in that product. However, by doing so they lose the original fans who end up with a product that is very different from the original, and at the same time they also lose the "new audience" because they have created a boring story with boring characters.

Lauren & friends has truly become their own worst enemies, the ultimate evil like no other in this whole series. Smh...
Tbh, I hope Henry Cavill is dare enough to do a collab works with CDPR, like in some kind of new secret Witcher project, just to spite even more on this cabal of madness...
Just imagine if Henry become a VA for a new Witcher character or maybe even a character in Cyberpunk world (like maybe Morgan Blackhand??!). If CDPR could afford Keanu Reeves & Idris Elba, they might as well as go with the most obvious hype train choice like Henry Cavill.

About the first witcher and the elder blood, for me it seemed like they hadn't really figured the right ingredients out in Blood Origin since Fjall seemed to be going insane/feral or dying towards the end. So maybe the flower contains some elder blood and thus does work to a certain extent but pure elder blood is needed to complete a stable and successful mutation.
The thing about having children with Fjall is that he and Éile had sex before he was "mutated" too. You know, the scene with the intense thunder where Éile wakes up in the woods alone.

The thing is that they only showed them kissing in that earlier scene and she woke up fully dressed, then they proceeded to actually show them having sex, so it would be natural to assume that the conception happened in the 2nd scene.

I'm not sure this is a Netflix specific issue. You see this happening to so many IPs, unrelated to Netflix itself. On the other side, Netflix also has Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This happens in the video game world too, as seen with the latest Saints Row.
I believe the fault lies in the hands of egomaniac and incompetent showrunners\writers that seem to want to write their own fan fictions instead of respecting what they're adapting\continuing. Whenever criticize, they would immediately hide behind the criticism of "toxic fans" (which yes, there are some) while ignoring everything else. Meanwhile, they piggy-back on a renown name like The Witcher to spearhead their initial popularity and public interest.
