Samyang 135mm f/2.0 ED UMC Lens for Sony E Mount: Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- I've been a Sony E mount convert for almost two years now and this new lens from Samyang really helps fill out the lens lineup offering a fast, long prime that is sharp, focuses close, and with the focus peaking feature of the Sony cameras, it's easy to get sharp quickly. I think this is a great addition to my 35/55 Zeiss, and when there is no/lo light, it will be nice to be able to reach for an E Mount prime rather than have to fool with adapters, etc... Last, the great surprise is how close if focuses!!! You could use it for intermediate macro work. the shot of my son's face (closeup) was at minimum focus. A great change from the 85 which had very poor close focus capability!

Great review BTW.
Runze Liu i rotfled so hard
I'm so glad that I am not the only one who laughed at that. XD
Got mine a few weeks ago, and I have to say, this is probably one of the best lenses I've ever shot with, at least optically. I also find it much easier to focus than the 85mm 1.4 for some reason. Thanks for your video, it helped me decide whether or not to get it.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video, Patrick!
and the careful Thumbnail selection.
***** I know, I know.. I'm a vimeo guy from way back and I'm still trying to figure out how to use youtube well ;)
The Focus Peaking makes manual lenses so easy to use. 1 of the main reason I got a A6000 so I can use old lenses in manual mode with an adapter. I don't know why Nikon and Canon don't have these amazing simple features.
+Alex Jakobs I think EVF also helps. With canon and nikon DSLRs, you're just looking at the mirror which itself is a stop or so darker due to loss of light. So you never truly see the real image that will be taken. Having focus peaking in EVF is the best feature.
I never use focus peaking anymore, I only use focus magnification !
@@DIYGuy85 I never use focus peaking anymore, I only use focus magnification !
Thanks for your honest review. Just received mine yesterday.
Hope you enjoy it!
I like the fact that you said that you can fix the "yellow" in the post. That is something that people need to understand, the camera/lenses doesn't have to shoot perfectly in terms of color... in post you can change the Lift, the Gamma, the Gain, the Offset, Shadow, Midtones, Highlights, Temperature, Tint, Saturation, Contrast, Hue, Luminance and so on... Final look is worked in the Post... ALWAYS. Thanks for your vide Patrick
thanks KJ. Every photo needs adjustment & video is no exception!
wow, the shoots of your son are so lovely!
with this review, I bought this lens. no regrets. beautiful portraits. this is a very specialized lens for me. it requires a lot of patience and it will pay off.
WOW...Patrick this is awesome. Ive been a Sony convert myself for a couple of years also. Ive been looking for a lenses to shoot my sons Wedding in april. Was looking at renting the f4 but can"t get it in time. I may have to make a purchase soon. I really don"t mind the manual focus either being an old guy myself. Thanks so much for your revue...now just have to break the news to the wife i want another lense.
Thanks, Patrick! Good looking review! Good job!
Loved the eye detail. I've got a Canon 70-200 f2.8 and I have to say the Rokinon deserves a chance.
Well done Patrick I own the 85mm 1.4 and thinking of getting the 135mm 2.0 great review.
thanks, and even if I'm correct about the 85 not being as fast as advertised, it's sure sharper than the other lenses I tested at the time. I could not tell the difference between the Zeiss and Samyang when I changed the files to grey-scale. Only the color rendition of the Samyang tipped me off as to which one it was.
Patrick Murphy-Racey it is as fast its just the t stop which is smaller than other 85 1.4s
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I'm strongly considering this lens, although I *do* own the Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 and I am pretty happy with that. Seeing as I have the FE55mm, I was thinking of trading the 85mm for the 135mm. (mainly for portraits) Not sure I want to give up the 85mm though.....
It's ironic how you say you're happy with this lens because it's a native e-mount and it's not a lens with an adapter, but this lens isn't even made for the 18mm flange mount of the emount system. It was made ground up for DSLRS and they've literally stuck on an adapter on the end to be able to mount it on an emount body.
+BoxxyFan What is your source? I don't really see the adapter or anything that looks like it at the end of it.
Great review. Real Madrid's fans everywhere...
Fantastic lens
Don't know if you put an annotation because I'm viewing this on my phone, but with the crop factor on an a6000 would be 202mm f/3.0 right? Not f/2.0?
HaiDHaiYena No!!!
It's more than two years on from this video now and still no native E mount AF 135mm f2.0 or less. The Batis at f2.8 hasn't tempted me away from my Samyang yet because its IQ is extremely impressive and probably on par with both the Zeiss and the Sigma 135mm f1.8 Art + MC-11 - but at over four times less expensive ...
I think Zeiss is smoking crack asking $2k for a 2.8 lens in that focal length. I bought the MC11/135mm f/1.8 ART combo and really like it. the EyeAF works pretty well but not as good as with native FE glass. I too will buy whatever Sony makes, whenever they make it... Hoping it will be a GM135mm f/1.8 or f/2- fingers crossed :)
I have the rokinon 24mm t1.5 on Sony a7s now I need a telephoto lens, great review
Really good laid back video. I love the outdoors...... Samyang and Rokinon have really stepped up their game I'm looking to try this lens out on a D3.. Like the Adesa Jacket are you a dealer too? Bought a lot of RV's from Adesa.
Now it is time to review the Samyang 135mm 1.8 AF 🙂
You'll have to go elsewhere for that review.. I'm sticking with my GM version :)
@@PMRTV Me too, but others may like to save some dollars and weight. Please poke to Sony that they should make a 1.4x teleconverter for the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM ! Thank you very much.
@@cameraprepper7938 oh man, I keep telling them about the need for the 1.4X for 135GM!!!! I also keep asking them to make a 1.3X and 1.7X
@@PMRTV Great, that will be very cool, 1.3x and1.7x teleconverters, but I will though be more than happy with just the 1.4x :)
Great review, Pat! You've got me interested. I'm still weighing this one with the Samyang 85mm, though, for my A7, or even a6000. Manual focus? That's all that was available in the late 60's and early 70's on my Minolta SRT101 and Nikon F4... ;-)
Great review. You do realize, the 'E mount versions' are just EF mount lenses with converters attached? Its cheaper to just get an adapter and use EF mount lenses, and of course there's no optical difference.
i have been rooting for a zeiss 135 1.8ZA but i am not on another spending spree after my a7s2 purchase three months ago...been also rooting for a half the price canon f2 for canon mount via my sigma adapter but then i saw this samyang...one reviewer says since it is a manual lens, focusing is much different than a lens with AF feature...more fluid focusing...i started photography with an all manual lens back in the 1990s and manual focusing is not new to me...this is the last review that i will read and watch...coz il hit the stores and buy the lens right away! thanks for sharing.
I think you should use it IBIS if possible. It is not easy to shoot a lens like this handheld on APSC without any stabilization.
Have this lens, love this lens!
patrick- Im so confused. If this sony E mount, wouldn't the pics be 10mp on crop mode on my sony a7ii? I just purchased this lens for it and am wondering if you could explain how some e mount work with fe mount and how some don't
+manuel ortiz E mount lenses could be E or FE style. E is made for APS-C sensors only. FE are made for Full frame sensors but can be used on APS-C sensors as well. This lens seems to be FE
E mount is the general term for the mount. Both aps-c and full frame lenses work with all e mount cameras. Lenses made for the smaller APS-c sensors will not cover the whole full frame sensor with an image but of course the full frame lenses will work on the smaller sensors just fine.
love the passion!
Thanks Patrick !
Hi Patrick, quick question for you! Does this lens make sense on the Sony A6000 too or it's more of a Full Frame lens?
I know it becomes a 202mm on that camera so I was wondering if that means there's even more background compression or whatever.
Also, if I'm searching for that focal length(loved 135mm for portraits on Canon more than my 70-300!) would this make more sense over a, let's say, 90mm f2 or f2.8(if they make this) which becomes exactly a 135mm equivalent on the Sony A6000?
Hi,Patrick! You know i have rokinon 85-1.4 and of course,it's not so long as 135 but the same fast as you said. And it's a great lens.Do you have comparison between 85 and 135? Thanks!
Patrick how would you say this lens compares vs the Rokinon 100mm Macro?
Hi Patrick, are you able to do a huge favour? I'm trying to work out the length of this lens and also the 85mm if you have it? When I look at the specs online it doesn't seem like they include the sony e length. It has an 'inbuilt' adapter. For example, the 85 is advertised at just over 100m, but the sony e version is definitely longer than that yet can't find that info anywhere. Thanks!
On APC it's gonna be an F/3 , the crop factor affect's the DOP too
It will be an f/3 as far as equivalent depth of field is concerned compared to a full frame. For exposure purposes, its still an f/2... just to clear that up a bit
No it does not. At least not directly. Only when you change the distance to the subject or change the focal length to get the same things in the picture as on a full frame, THEN you'll change DOF. That is what many people completely mix up.
Oh and for exposure its also F2.0 (or ~T2.0).
The crop is just a crop. That is the easiest way t think about it. You get exactly the look of a 135mm f/2 lens on a full frame but the image is then cropped bu the APS-C sensor. When you talk about it being an 200mm equivalent that only has to do with the field of view left after the crop, it otherwise still looks like a 135mm f/2 lens. It will not have the depth of field of a 200mm f/2 because all you are changing is the cropping. So instead of doing a bunch of conversions you could just consider it a 135mm f2 lens that you then crop.
Oh, and if you were trying to figure out the depth of field equivalent as if it was a 200mm lens then you cannot simply multiply by the same crop factor. Put in a few numbers into a depth of field calculator and you will see what I mean. In this instance, a 135mm f2 lens has the equivalent depth of field of a 200mm at f4.5 actually.
Thanks for review. I've been considering this, I have the 85 1.4 and find that it can amaze me. Do you think the IQ is even better from the 135?
Samyang 75 & 85mm, Sigma and Sony 85mm primes, what do you mean no primes over 55mm?
LOL, check the date on this video Chris :)
@@PMRTV apologies, yes 2015, I only noticed this lens in E-mount recently while looking at the new AF version on its way. Yes E-mount line was very small back then even from Sony as it was still fresh off the ground and the SRT? line of A-mount was starting to be phased Out.
do you recommend for shooting video?
What do you mean by "the 35 is not a true 1.4?" Are you referring to light transmission? If so, that's t-stops; the f-value is 1.4, as it's just a ratio of focal length to aperture size. 35mm focal length, f/1.4 means the aperture is 25mm wide option.
years ago I tested an EF mount 85mm f/1.4 against the Canon 85L, and the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4. The Samyang was much darker wide open with the same camera body as I was testing. I believe that lens might be closer to an f/1.6 or 1.5, but it did not let in as much light as the others set to 1.4.
Oh ok, you're referring to light transmission. It's not really correct to say it's not a true f/x lens, because f-value is just focal length/aperture size, and therefore, it is a true f/1.4 lens.
Light transmission varies based on a number of factors such as coatings for example. The light transmission you're referring to is measured in t-stops.
If you look at the link below, comparing the Canon 85mm f/1.2, the Samyang 85mm and the Zeiss, you'll see that the Canon has a light transmission of about 1.4 Tstops, the Samsung 1.7 Tstops and the Zeiss 1.6 Tstops. www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/EF85mm-f-1.2L-II-USM-versus-85mm-f-1.4-Aspherical-IF-Canon-versus-Carl-Zeiss-Planar-T-85mm-f-1.4-ZE-Canon___270_0_363_0_329_0
+AdventuristoSupremo I was just about to clarify this but glad you did it to avoid confusion
Nice video, im considering to buy this lens to use on my a7ii !!! One question: what is the brand / model of the strap that you are using ? Thanks !
ok ... i know this is an old video , is this lens full frame ?
Thank's for your honest review! I've been looking for a FE lens that is a F2 on the telephoto land.. and appreciate Samyang making all these beautiful lenses, I have the same camera ( a7 mark ii ) and been shooting with a lot of manual lenses and not afraid ...Specially when you get body stabilization on the camera body..Do you have any account where we can take a look at your pic samples?
BTW aren't you exited about the SEL35F14Z? that lens look's awesome
I have the 24-70 zeiss/ the 55 1.8 and really considering buying the 35mm zeiss.. however the price is stoping me for now, I'm wonder If you will be able to get it and test it?
Thank you again for this review
Great video patrick. Im new to the A7 and photography all together. I have the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 and i just bought a metabones adapter for real cheap cause im thinking about the canon 135mm f2. How does this compare to the canon? {i know the canon has AF). Should i sell my adapter or keep it for other canon lenses and just get this Samyang?
Have noticed a rattling of loose parts inside? I've ordered 3 so far and they all have it. It sounds like loose bearings or aperture leaves.
Thx for sharing. Love the Rokinon 14 & 24 lens will buy this for my A7Rll. Note music can be lowered or removed as it does not enhance the video ( I'm also a video producer 😊)
+TJ Boarman you are acting like a child by your response.Grow up.
tell me sir what did you do to contribute to this post other than posting a smart ass comment? Childish on the contrary, I posted my opinion just like you. The only difference is a matter of perception vs reality. You're still a ......."
simply by your comments I see what you really are with nothing to contribute
Wouldn't this be a F2.8 on a crop sensor as exposure basis? Crop sensors don't let in light much as a FF sensor due to the physical size right?
Great video! I have a question, is there a lens collar you can get for this lens?
Hello and thank you for the review. I´m looking for a lens like this to shoot sports in an amateur setting. What I´m interested in is the possibility of a metabones speedboster ultra and the EF Version of this lens on an A6000.
The e mount Version seems to be just an DSLR Lens with a spaceholder to make up for the missing mirror and the variant with the speedbooster has a light advantage.
What are the drawbacks?
correction plz 1:35 ....u said it will be 200mm f2.0 in crop....when it comes to crop calculation.....u also have to multiply the focal with crop factor as well as aperture..... so....this lens will provide equivalent to 200mm f3....
Wrong!!!
Hey Pat, How would you describe the colors compared to the Canon 135 L ?
I wondered how it will behave in a GX8 with 2x crop it 270 mm 2.0. a prime like that cost more than $4000 for a full frame so I will try and see.
hello, have you tried another lenses like yongnuo, for example?
thanks
Now the big question would be, how does it compare to the A-mount Zeiss 135 F1.8?
this was already covered in a review and the Samyang did great against the venerable f/1.8. But, without AF... If Sony/Zeiss updates their 135 and adds SSM motor, I'll be getting one immediately btw ;)
I tried to find but do you have review of 85mm 1.4
Focus peaking is working?
Really nice review. You just cost me $550 :) Thanks for sharing.
LOL, you are welcome!!!
so it means u can mount this lens on the sony a7 series without using an adapter while samyang states that fits sony E mount?
Peter Cheung ? All a7 use E mount.
Could I ask which camera strap this is?
Thanks you =)
so their shortcut was building the adapter in the lens...sad. it actually should be shorter :P because one of the first things you say is that "its a big beast, as it should be".
i hope we'll see manufacturers work with the short flange distance, not around it
it's called physics. Wait for Zeiss to make a complicated design that'll cost 2-3 times as much.
Again with the mythical explanation with physics
I'm leaning towards 4 times as much
I'm guessing you already ordered the 135 1.8 Sony lens that just came out :D
Thank you Patrick, Very helpful review, like you I have been looking for such a fast portrait lens I usually use Zeiss glass and was a bit reluctant with a lower spec lens, but from your review I feel a lot better and to say nothing off the savings.
Jerry Creaney D.O.P
Can it fit for Nikon crop sensor camera like D7000?
+Fazle Rabbi Khan Sure, but i wouldnt use it with a Nikon. I own the 85 1.4 and use it with my apsc sony a65. with focus peaking and magnification, no problem, but with only magnification on the lcd, this is only for very slow photography. Plus its not stabilized (sony a65 internal stabilization...sorry :b( . so that would be a long, not stabilized lens that you can only focus properly while looking at the screen, with magnification, which doesnt help holding it steady.
Understood
Can anybody say how much this lens cost?
f2.0 vs f4.0 isn't that only a 1stop difference?
no, f/2 to f/2.8 is one stop, then f/2.8 to f/4 is another = 2
Can I use it on a Sony A7?
Yes
i wish it had auto focus
thanks
a 200mm prime would be nice 2.8 or faster
how far do u have to stand away from a subject? let's say a whole person?
it's not a great close focusing lens like the Sony 135mm f/1.8, but you can get much closer than a head to toe full length portrait. It will focus to 2.62 feet, so not bad at all!
The amount of errors in this video is uncanny
Its not so sharp.
You're joking right?
Sigma Octantis SEL50 is sharper. Sony 85 GM is sharper. This is just average sharpness.
Ok, i looked one more time and im taking it back. It is sharp and CA is really impressive.
