Judging from the post most seem to be in favour of the F3, I prefer the Tascam, sounds more full with the right amount of everything whiles the F3 adds more highs, something am very sensitive to and easily fatigues my ears. Am a Tascam guy cause I prefer their sounds!
ME 2!👍...Also, bein' a Tascam Girl 4 MANY decades, I find it hard to believe the ZOOM (which hasn't been around anywhere NEAR as long as Tascam -BTW), could even come CLOSE to the X8 -especially when comparing the two's GUIs: MAJOR Game Changer -The ZOOM doesn't even make it into the ballpark!🙄... And besides, if I wanted more highs -I'd just take care of THAT in post with EQ or a High-Pass filter!😒
I'm glad to have met you. I'm also a Japanese person living in Osaka, and like you, I'm a video creator. All the places you visited are places I often go for walks on a daily basis. And I also bought F3.
Finally, finally, the comparison between F3 and X8 has come. Appreciate! I like to travel in Japan either! Lucky both of you, Libby and Marcel! Hope you were in safe and happiness in Osaka!
Another very entertaining video, Marcel. I cannot really tell the two recorders apart, especially as you were not recording simultaneously, so they were not the exact same sounds. The F3 may have an edge though. Sounded crisper and more detailed. I currently enjoy the X8 as I found one with a great bargain (cheaper than the F3), and as I find it more versatile for my own needs (I don't only do field recording but all sorts of stuff with it). I was thinking about the F6, but for almost third the price, the X8, with all its limitations, will do for now.
Really amazing video as usual. Definitely prefer the F3. With the hydrophone I heard slightly more detail like the "click clack" of the train tracks at the end. I also thought the F3 was clearer and better on the other samples too. I enjoyed that a lot. Thanks Marcel, and Libby of course for her great filming. All the best. Simon.
Wonder if the difference is in the microphones? Wonderful comparison , but thinking the recordings would be more impacted by the difference in the microphones than the preamps?
WOW. Awesome test... I think F3 is mutch better on audio qualitty. Tascam is so beatifull and has incorporated mics, but F3 have best results. Thanks for your work.
About the EMI/RFI at around 4:49: With the Korg CM300 and the X8 I sometimes experience similar on ports where input gain is set to "high". On inputs with "low gain" setting, I cannot hear it. Maybe your input/track 5 is set to "high gain".
Oh yes you need the change the gain but it also depends on what sounds you like to record. Loud sounds is no issue but the quieter is is, the harder is to get good audio. Also the self noise is higher.
Good afternoon, thank you very much for a very detailed review. Please tell me, is it possible to connect the Sennheiser, Me2, MKE2 lavalier microphones to Zoom F3, via the 3.5 jack? The characteristics of the Sennheiser lavalier microphones indicate a 7.5 volt power supply. In the Zoom F3 recorder, +24/48 volts are supplied to the microphone. If you choose +24 volts, will it not spoil the microphone from overvoltage? I'm not good at this, please tell me
Looking for the first recorder for nature sounds which you recommend for the money.? In this video I more like x8 more clean sound so x6 maiby the same mh
Hi. Great video! Which one, or others similar, would you think to be preferable for recording a handpan instrument at a budget no higher than $400 USD? Thank you.
I like the way on the zoom you record in mono but can change the file format to stereo there and then. I have to say I'm partial to the Tascam, 'though.
After watching the full video they both sounds great. I might need to listen to bandcamp versions because the UA-cam compression might be sounding off the sound.
I want to be able to do video with my iPhone 12 and use the Tascam for the audio. What adapter do I need? Is it the Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter or something else?
Thank you! Oh you mean the adapter? The contact microphone is quarter inch but the Zoom doesn’t come with a Dual XLR port. Its only a adapter in order to use it with.
I need something like this but with some weatherproofing! My Zoom F3 was bricked with only a few drops of water... Some functions to program it in advance (timer) and auto-start (only record when there is sound) would be perfect...
Thanks for all your great videos! I am about to buy the Zoom F3, and I wondered what you would recommend recording stereo sounds, nature, ambiences etc. I would be looking more on the budget end, but am flexible. I just want clear recordings and low noise. Thanks :)
Hi Alex, thank you so much for watching. Hmm the Mic Boosters Clippies are a good start. We made a video with them inside a dummy head. Lom's Usi Pro are probably not available right now. But everything adds up if you want good wind protection. Did you watch the video about the 1000 budget? The 8022 is a wonderful microphone. Line Audio has a nice pair too.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks I did watch the video about the 8022 and I was interested in that also. I'm really looking to step up from my Zoom h1 for general stereo recordings, kind of all rounder mics. What would be the advantage of the 8022 vs the clippers for example? I guess as the two capsules are extremely close in the 8022 its more limited to get a wide stereo field? And sorry to ask one more thing, but I also wanted a pair of pencil condensers, to use for simple recordings of live music with the F3, but also that would be useful in my studio, for recording instruments. Would you have any recommendations for this? I often see the Rode Nt5s and Oktavia Mk012s come up, would these be ones you'd choose or anything else? I will stop bothering you after this :) Thanks again
@@AlexDelfont Hi Alex, we just bought a new Earthworks Microphone. The QTC50 is a beast but they have cheaper options as well. They look amazing and sound amazing. Check them out. People love Octavia microphones and I'm sure you can't go wrong with them. The advantages are that you can get a propper wind protection for it and it's a robust microphones with a wonderful sound quality. You can record very loud sounds with it too. You can also use it for a camera or even use it with the H1n since it has its own battery supply. So you could switch between XLR or 3.5 easily. The Clippys are omnis so you get a lot of ambiences with it but you would also figure out the right spacing. So you need to purchase a spacer. Rode has one but you can find cheaper ones too. It's really up to you what you want but the 8022 is just a wonderful allrounder microphone with an XY configuration.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks very much for all the info. Yeah the 8022 and its more expensive big brother looks great, but not the most portable solution. It would be nice to have one and they are reasonably priced, but I think something like the Clippies for very portable stuff too. Do you not get something like the Clippies or Lom Usi pros but in a single sort of unit, already in xy position, similar to the built in mics on many other recorders. Or maybe this is what you meant by the spacers, I will have to look into it :)
@@AlexDelfont Hi Alex, the clippys are omnidirectional microphones, so an XY position isn’t really something I would do with these microphones. Check out a post about different microphone polar patterns. Thats very important to learn so you understand what your microphone is capable of and what it actually records. DPA has a post about it but a couple YT videos are available too.
I am happy that Zoom F3 seems to be winning here because I just ordered one (on its way!) Amazing video and thanks a lot for doing all this work. One question: What kind of adapter are you using for the Zoom F3 to record with the contact mic? Is it an impedance matcher? Ta
Great content but I would have preferred the same sound samples using a splitter cable since this way it is crazy hard to compare since different trains/directions, different speeds of opening the curtain etc.
How do you process the 32 bit float audio? like what DAW do you use? Do you add compression, normalizing or any other digital enhancements to the clips?
Hi Dan! Almost all DAW's can process 32 bit recordings without any extra work. I use Audition, Reaper and Ableton to process my files. Audition for basic sound effects and ambience recordings, Reaper for Ambisonic, DMS for precut and finishing in Audition. Ableton for Sound Design. Sometimes I do normalize the recordings in Audition. It's super easy. We released a video about how I'm editing sound effects etc.
@@FreeToUseSounds cool thanks for the reply! I'm trying to make my binaural recordings channel better but it's difficult to learn how to do everything in production work for a good video. I think I have decent gear to get started it's easy to work with it on its own, just learning how to use everything together is the hardest part.

As far as can be judged from a youtube video, I think the F3 has a better tonal balance. The highs are coming through better and are better defined. Hoping for a good black friday deal somewhere for the F3. More Japan-episodes on the way? Great place!
Thank you so much for watching and yes! We just published a new video! :) I don't think there is a BL deal for these devices. The demand is too high and the supply is low. :(
This MKH 8040 mic is over a grand . Surely this makes a big difference? But saying this both audio recorders sound virtually identical. Great video though.
How I want to make a comparsion between nature sound and manmade sounds and wants to record my sound samples. besides zoom F3 what other gears and software for analysis I need. Thank you
I enjoy both recorders, but the F3 is the winner with better Preamps-- the F3 was one of the smartest things Zoom has done to make 32bit recording widely accessible (read- Affordable) to all!!
The videos you upload are great. Thanks to that, I also have a hobby of recording sound. Please introduce yourself. Tripods, cables and attachments thank you always
There both good unites and at the end of the day it all will depend on what you want to do as a recordist with one or the other on location recording digital audio.
Great video! 🎧 The Zoom F3 is the winner for me, much cleaner. I'd recommend getting the BTA-1 for Bluetooth control. It's a game changer for controlling the F3 (Android & iOS) and will work with your F6 (iOS only 🙁).
Thank you so much for watching. Ah I'm loosing these small parts in a heart beat. I wish something like this could be already within the machine. Just like with the Sound Devices.
H3 has more depth to the sound. TASCAM is out there, too - that said, the main appeal to me is the form factor. You can pull it out of your pants and start recording immediately anywhere. I definitely would have both if I could afford them. :)
I noticed the same frequency limitation on my F3 when recording at 192 KHz. Using the same microphone on my Zoom F6 (Sennheiser MKH 8020) it goes past 75KHz and slowly tapers off unlike the steep cutoff on the F3. Kind of disappointing. BTW, were you able to get a Sanken CO-100K? Cheers from Tokyo.
I feel like the tascam sounds alot like my dr-40x, whereas the f3 sounds a lot clearer and more natural. The menu on the f3 seems a bit finnicky though.
I only use my F3 with the app. As it should, given the larger screen of a phone, it's much more user friendly. Also, while making stealthy recordings I'm just another dude scrolling my phone.
@D R Yes, you need the BTA-1 adapter, or at least I don't know about any possibility to use a cable. The benefits for using the adapter weigh much more than its price, which is about 39 € at the moment, so for me it's a no brainer.
Very nice and interesting, thank you. So Tascam on X8 has solved the problem only the latest ones and on the previous ones it cannot or does not want to intervene. If so, I will never buy Tascam again.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Maybe I should write TASCAM and ask if they can replace the unit I have. I'm in the land of Tascam but my hopes aren't high.
Both are great, with the 2 dollar contact mic, i do like more the Zoom F3. Really good recorders for content creators. Is always a pleasure to see a video from you guys, have a good one!
I liked the sound of the F3 more as well, but I noticed it’s missing a lot of the high end. But the high end on the Tascam sounds warbly and thin. Might have to look into Sound Devices 😅
I’m pretty happy with the Tascam x6. But I use it for game sound design whenever the libraries fall short. Great unit, easy to use and decent sound quality.
@@FreeToUseSounds I hope so too. I didn't have any issues with sound quality out of my Tascam using XLR microphones. I am now using the F6 with a pair of nano microphones from Immersive Sound. Have you heard of them? It's looks like a small business out of France. They are INCREDIBLE and very inexpensive (less than $100 for the pair). They are perfect for stealth recording on a budget.
This was great to listen to and watch. I'm gonna say that the Zoom F3 had the edge. I'd really like to get one of them because I'm tired of carrying the F6 only to use two channels.
Thank you so much for watching! I honestly don't like the fact that I can't adjust the gain at all. Taking away this function might be not the best. Especially when I started out I learned a lot how to set gain by just listening. The F3 takes it away.
@@FreeToUseSounds Ah, interesting. I didn't realise the F3 had no gain controls. That said, I've had recordings ruined on my F6 when the gain control has moved in my pouch. The knobs are really quite flimsy. And when using the DPA mics with those big clunky adapters, I've had crackling sounds too. I wondered whether a smaller device like the F3 would make it less error-prone.
@@RandumbTech shame they're so hard to get a hold of these days! 😅 ordered my F6 back in June and im still waiting for it to arrive. Everywhere is the same though, clearly an in demand piece of kit!

How I want to make a comparsion between nature sound and manmade sounds and wants to record my sound samples. besides zoom F3 what other gears and software for analysis I need. Thank you
Liked the F3 better in the lows but the X8 better in the highs
So getting both then :)
What camera was this shot on? The video quality is gorgeous!
Thank you so much for watching. For this we used the Sony A7iv with a 16-35 mm Gmaster lens.
@@FreeToUseSounds That's a prime setup indeed. Inspiring production quality on all fronts, thank you for the passionate work :)
@@Rm3327films Thank you so much! Even there is so much new stuff coming out every year now, we stick with this setup for now.
Hmm close one but I think I’m gonna have to go with the zoom F3...arigato for sharing 😁
Good choice :)
Sorry for the newb question; why would there be a hum only on one channel? Does that mean there is a problem with the device??
Hi! Oh what hum?
I enjoy both recorders, but the F3 is the winner with better Preamps-- the F3 was one of the smartest things Zoom has done to make 32bit recording widely accessible (read- Affordable) to all!!
Thats for sure Michael! I hope they make a H1n 32 bit version. This would be the next hit.
Does the zoom f3 have better preamps than the zoom h6?
The videos you upload are great.
Thanks to that, I also have a hobby of recording sound.
Please introduce yourself. Tripods, cables and attachments
thank you always
There both good unites and at the end of the day it all will depend on what you want to do as a recordist with one or the other on location recording digital audio.
That's right Anthony.
What's the best lavalier microphone you've ever used?
DPA 4060 is the best I ever used but Sanken has some pretty good lav's too.
@@FreeToUseSounds Do you use DPA often? How long have you been using it? How about its durability?
@@ciekaweurzadzenia I have them since the beginning of 2018 and still use them.
@@FreeToUseSounds Great, I'm also considering buying a DPA
Which recorder do you like to use more often for XLR mics? Tascam X8 or small Zoom F3?
Who is the photographer? I love your video! two recorder awesome! But I prefer zoom!
Lets see! I am in front of the camera. Now who do you think is behind? We're two people.
14:49 what app is that so I can check my device?
Hi! Oh that's Adobe Audition. But you could also use RX. If you're looking for a free application, I think Audacity has a spectrogram as well.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you!
What filter did you use for this video?
We don’t use filters…
@@FreeToUseSounds really well it must be the lense then what kind did you use?
Where did you bought the XLR adaptor?
Hi! In a music shop.
@@FreeToUseSounds what's the name of that?
@@basiliusrenalabimanyupalum4119it’s a no name brand
Great video! 🎧 The Zoom F3 is the winner for me, much cleaner.
I'd recommend getting the BTA-1 for Bluetooth control. It's a game changer for controlling the F3 (Android & iOS) and will work with your F6 (iOS only 🙁).
Thank you so much for watching. Ah I'm loosing these small parts in a heart beat. I wish something like this could be already within the machine. Just like with the Sound Devices.
Sir please make a video of field recording with Holland lark m1
Hi Vishwa, we won't make videos about such devices, sorry.
H3 has more depth to the sound.
TASCAM is out there, too - that said, the main appeal to me is the form factor. You can pull it out of your pants and start recording immediately anywhere.
I definitely would have both if I could afford them. :)
That’s true. I like that too that I can start recording right away.
Hmm, that’s interesting indeed. I tried really everything to get ANY Sanken but nothing :(. I just bought a QTC 50 from Earthworks.
What gear you use to record your voice in your vlogs?
This is the Rode Wireless Go 2. Yesterday the lav cable broke :(
I feel like the tascam sounds alot like my dr-40x, whereas the f3 sounds a lot clearer and more natural. The menu on the f3 seems a bit finnicky though.
They really pushed the recorder to its limits in size. That's for sure :)
Hey Marcel and Libby, I feel the Zoom F3 was much better the sounds were better and more crisp. Looks like fun! Greg
Hi Greg! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We already brainstorm about our next video :)
@fabimesizae Oh, so if I buy a new X8, the ultrasound problem is solved?
Do you know if the box has a production number that indicate newer batch?
@@shapelesscube I don't know that. You better reach out to the Tascam support and ask about that.
@@FreeToUseSounds I'll do that. . .
Thanks for a great and informative video, as always! :D
@@shapelesscube Please let us know how it goes. I hope they will respond.
Both are great, with the 2 dollar contact mic, i do like more the Zoom F3.
Really good recorders for content creators.
Is always a pleasure to see a video from you guys, have a good one!
Thank you Eduardo!
Why can I only display the frequency range on izotope to 20khz
Probably because you have your recorder selected on 44.1 or 48khz right?
F3 sounds better? Yes, but it’s also definitely louder! And louder is perceived as better sounding. Hmm.. 🧐
Amazing
Osaka sounds great!!!
It sure does and we can't wait to come back :)
F3 sounds much better to my ears. I had the X8 but sold it because it was a little too big and the built in mics were not great.
I hope I can exchange my unit to a newer one.
They are perfect for stealth recording on a budget.
so nerdig und gleichzeitig herzlich. Herrlich!
Ha Ha! Danke Dir :)
Zoom sounded cleaner to me for the door sound
F3 for sure.
f3 ftw
🥳🥳
Oh I would say you should give it a go for these reasons. I hope the F3 is available again.
The F6 also has the ability to receive Timecode via 3.5mm which makes a big difference if u need that feature (I do).
@@RandumbTech shame they're so hard to get a hold of these days! 😅 ordered my F6 back in June and im still waiting for it to arrive. Everywhere is the same though, clearly an in demand piece of kit!
Passionate
TASACAm sounded cleaner with the contact mic....
You mean the contact microphone?
@@FreeToUseSounds Yes I mean the Contact Mic.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: I'm also a proud owner of the Tascam X8!😏
So glad you mentioned that! We truly appreciate you sharing this valuable information with us.
f3 is so good
Zoom F3
🥳🥳🥳🥳

seems the F3 has a little more punch than the Tascam
zoom f3 is better.
