❓ F3 or X8?! Which one are you getting?
P.S. This video was colored with my presets, get them here: whoismatt.com/luts
Just ordered the F3.
just order the F3
bought F3💪
I can't decide. I would use it for live concerts. Both have their pro and cons. I think the X8 has a more traditional view when looking at your levels. F3 is simpler and you can use a larger storage, but you'll also need microphones for field recording. F3 is definitely better for stealth. The tascam has since dropped in price making it only a fifty dollar difference. Who do you think has better Dac. Does the tascam microphones snap off like the new H6 essential? Can I use the on board microphones with external microphones simultaneously? Which device do you feel is sturdier?
Most excellent comparison Matt. Thank you to both you and Sweetwater for making this happen. Peter.
Excellent video Matt! I picked up the X8 and I am pretty happy with it so far. I am combining it with the Rode Wireless Go II. These wireless mics have internal recording and this way I have a backup recording.
I use the Tentacle Sync Track-E recorders when I need to monitor wireless (Via Bluetooth). So that might be an excellent alternative product for anyone who wants to avoid the limitation you mentioned on 10:56. Anyway, I hope Tascam and Zoom will just enable this feature; I don't understand why they don't do that.
Another company holds a patent in the US for the ability to monitor live wireless feed on recorders. Tentacle Sync sells two versions of their recorders and the US version doesn't allow live monitoring with Bluetooth either.
Awesome Matt! Thank you, I've been hanging out for this one 😁
I already have the F3 on order. The X8 is neat but the small size of the F3 is amazing... batteries or power adapter and can be used as an audio interface and has an out line so I can record direct to camera while also recording... as far as I understand anyways it seems like a no brainer for those wanting a compact option on the go. I'm kind of annoyed with my Vocaster Two purchase if this is as useful as this seems it could be... I'll know soon when my order comes in and update to the March 16, 2022 firmware.
Thanks Matt. I knew I needed to buy a recorder and thankful your beard has done all the research for me.
Excellent video. You do a great job.
Does the Zoom F3 also receive power through the USB-C cable when plugged into your laptop, tablet or a portable charger?
Thank you for this extremely useful and well made video.
I already have the F6 so for now I'm holding off, but I think the Zoom makes the most sense for wedding filmmakers.
Excellent info thanks!
Great video, although it would have been great if you had let us know about the quality of the mics on the X8
My H4ns have been work horses over the years but so glad to say goodbye to slow start up times.
It took aaaaaaggggeeessss 😂😂 reception would be half over by the time it turned on
Hi Matt! What do you say about Zoom R4 MultiTrak Recorder? Will it be suitable for a wedding videographer? I consider it as an alternative Zoom F3.
FYI - Unfortunately F3 with BTA do not support the timecode Tentacle Sync E. they have agreement with Ultra Sync Blue but not with Tentacle Sync E
Great comparison vid brother!
Thanks man!
Which would be a good upgrade to my zoom h4n ? 😀🙏🏽
after watching all these video's on the tascam x8 and zoom f3 i think the zoom f6 is worth the extra money
Hi. Great video! Which one, or others similar, would you think to be preferable for recording a handpan instrument at a budget no higher than $400 USD? Thank you.
how does the x8 compare to the f3 noise floor? I've heard the noise floor is better on the f3 which is a big factor for doing ambient recordings
Any indications on how much memory it would take to record one hour of audio using 32 bit float at the highest bitrate?
Thanks! Does the x8 make it possible to transmit data via Bluetooth? Or just the ability to see on the phone screen?
Been waiting for this!!
Hi
I have a wedding work coming soon usually I use tascam dr 10L . I can’t buy f3 as not available before May. Which will be good and easy use
Your overwiew is brilliant. What I think is lacking would be how you are thinking a weddingphotographer/videomaker are using the different inputs abd/or are you thinking that the couple are waring the F3 with a lavallier mic or what ? or with any other portable wirefree device in to any of them. I am not clear about if the F3 can output 24 bit to the camera while recording in 32 bit.
Hey Matt, thanks for the review. I've been waiting for someone to make this comparison. The X8 looks really great on paper, but almost every other review of it people seem to be frustrated by the screen and there seem to be a lot of bugs with it. Have you had any issues with the X8 so far?
Haven’t had any issues yet personally
Moore ... to what device does the timecode work, with radio or bluetooth or was it with a connection input from ex. UltraSyncOne or was ir with any Bluetooth Device ?
Amazing should i get this for capturing motorcycle exhaust sounds and while riding? Which mic should i place under the seat since doesn’t have a capsule?
My wife buys from Sweetwater all the time (she's a musician), and they have been the most professional retail outlet we've ever known. Seems you're getting much better battery life from the X8 than other reviewers. Good to know that's possible. As far as the difference in sound, the Tascam has a richer, more 'melodious' sound than the Zoom, although I know Zoom pre-amps are usually quieter. Personally, I prefer the Tascam sound, as a noise floor can always be eliminated with a simple gate.
What does she play?
Rented the X8 two times. Each time it presented a new problems. Glitchy software, I/0 problems, inaccurate battery life display. Bought an F3 and it just does the job. Yes it’s limited, but I’ll be purchasing a second as recorders in multiple locations works best for me as opposed to getting the F6.
This might be a dumb question but if I pass through audio through x8 into camera will that recording attached to video be 32 bit and if I do pass through audio will I have a recoding on x8 and audio file attached to video. Thanks for the great videos.
When AA batteries are installed and I connect to a smartphone via USB C, does it consume AA batteries or smartphone batteries?
Does it have settings which battery takes priority when USB C cable is connected?
Hi Matt! Thank you so much for this comparison. I've only been filming weddings for a year now. Might be a silly question but which mics would you recommend buying to plug into the F3 as wireless mics? thank you!
Hey Karina! I really don’t recommend wireless mics as they often have too many signal issues. If you had to go wireless though I would look at a Sennheiser AVX
@@whoismatt do you recommend just plugging into the DJ board and having a mic on a stand during a ceremony? Sorry if this is in one of your other videos - been looking at a lot of them today!
Is the timecode a Firmware update for the F3? I thought I heard Curtis Judd said it the F3 really didn't have true timecoding.
i do want to ask matt, the X8 can it be able to monitor by distance?
I love the idea of the set it and forget it F3 32-bit but what software is required to mix it down to 24-bit for use in my NLE?
In the specifications of the Rode VXLR Pro adapter, I read that the plug-in power supply is 4 Volts when the phantom power supply is 24 Volts and 48 Volts. It turns out that the Rode VXLR PRO adapter, connected to the Zoom F3 audio recorder, converts a phantom power supply of 12-48 Volts to a voltage of 4 Volts and transmits it to the Rode Lavalier Go lavalier microphone. Does this mean that in such cases it will not matter whether I set up a phantom power supply of 24 Volts or 48 Volts in the settings of the Zoom F3 audio recorder? After all, the adapter will still convert to 4 Volts, which is necessary for a lapel microphone? Most importantly, will the adapter prevent the Rode Lavalier Go Lavalier microphone from breaking (burning) due to high voltage? One point is unclear to me. They write that first you need to attach a lapel microphone to the Zoom F3 audio recorder, and then install 48 Volt phantom power in the Zoom F3 settings. Otherwise, the lavalier microphone will burn out. And doesn't the Rode VXLR Pro adapter convert 48 Volts to 4 Volts, despite the fact that before or after connecting the lapel microphone, I installed phantom power in the Zoom F3 audio recorder?
Thanks for the video. You mention that the F3 includes timecode internally without needing additional gear. Does it just run off of the assigned date / clock setting? Does the timecode show up properly when you bring a file into your NLE software? thanks!
no, you need to get the Bluetooth adapter, about $20.
Thanks matt!!
Bluetooth adapter selling here are included, just brought it few days ago.
I really was looking forward for this video. But I also wanted more out of the F3. I’ve learned that in the filmaking industry if you don’t buy right you’ll buy twice. I’ll save some more money for the Tascam. Quick question how good are the built in mic’s of the x8?
They’re good mics. Keep in mind they aren’t super directional so they won’t work as well as a shotgun mic
My F3 arrived the other day. I tested it out this weekend by putting it about 1 ft away from my lawmower. When I brought it into resolve nothing was peaked. I laughed so hard. This works. I'm not 100% on the quiet levels yet though. I brought up one recording and there was a steady amount of noise. Could be self noise in the mic though. The 32-bit works though for sure. I can imagine using it for concerts and loud music and not having a problem at all in the edit.
😂 the magic is real
Flying Jackalope - do you know the file size of 32-bit recording? what is the file size for 30 minutes or an hour of recording on 32-bit? thanks!
@@TheAwesomeSam No idea. I would imagine there are some super specs out there somewhere. Curtis Jude did a review and they get pretty nerdy usually so he might have that data.
Is those recorder can use the "rode videomic ntg" since its a 1/8"plug ?
Thank you for this video. Question about the zoom f3. I want to use it as a dslr camera interface. Running my mic into the f3 then use the 3mm jack output directly into my camera to record both video and audio together. Does this allow me 32bit float with the line out 3mm jack to camera? If so, how do I set it as I don't see anything about this anywhere online. I only see volume line level adjustments. In other worlds, can I still get 32 bit float directly into my camera? Thank you
I believe you can't. If you're running hot with the F3, more than likely the camera audio will clip then. Unless the camera has 32 bit audio to begin with
Can the F3 or x8 allow you to name your audio files?
Hello Matt, How comes you stopped doing bts of some weddings you've covered?
I have the f6 but going to buy a f3 for the size. Thank u for this video!! 🙌
👍 glad to help Riccardo!
By now I have both as well as some other recorders, including F8n Pro, H6, F2, H1n, DR10x etc. If I were forced to keep only one? It would probably be the X8 due to its flexibility and variety of connectors. Or the F2 which is my favourite lavalier recorder. In all honesty I like the F3, but have not used it for anything apart from trying it out. I might sell it to buy some microphone. But not sure as I actually like it. But it does not get much use.
X8 for sure - the screen/more modern tech is so worth it to me. Thanks for your in depth review as always Matt! Super helpful.
Thanks Megan!
Did you purchase an X8? If so have you any issues?
Yes I did! I absolutely love it. I had it die once using rechargeable amazon batteries so I've switched to using only regular aa's. Other than that no issues@@biscorbit
Thank you!
Are both usb audio interface support 32bit recording?
ZOOM F3 form factor is very appealing. It is simple and quick to operate, it is small and light. You set it ON and boom you are recording in no time. X8, on the other hand, you need some time to set it to recording, 10 second start, then you need to dig into the menus. ZOOM F3 on a video camera, is all you need, light and small ad I have said. One drawback for X8, the built-in mics feel very flimsy, and in a professional environment, where you move a lot, and put your gear to a hard exercise, I would be afraid to rip them off too easily. That is a pity X8 has no mic protection like the famous SONY PCM D-100 has on the top of its body (with the top quality unrivaled mics it looks and feels amazingly good). So, ZOOM F3 is my choice, but I have other recorders so that one would just complete my arsenal. Otherwise, X8 is certainly a good choice too. It all depends on what you need and expect from a recorder.
Hey Matt. Great video. One thing I'm wondering though...when the X3 is hooked up to a mirrorless camera, it seems to send a stereo mix to the camera and not two seperate mono L and R signals. (It does whoever record two mono tracks on the card) do you find this to be a limitation for event videography?
Hey! Not surprised it’s a mix considering it’s just one stereo mic cable going from the recorder to the camera. Good news is you should be able to easily sync everything in post :)
@@whoismatt can you arrange your mix with with the mics panned to either side?
i just received it today, is amazing but i noticed a problem :( we all
know that when we zoom i the wave form it affect the line out and the
recording, BUT if you set the Zoom and start recording then any changes
on the zoom will affect the Line out only, not the recording, in my case
i need this feature as i record everything coming out of the DJ, so i
would set different zoom level when people dance than the level at
speeches time and i don't want to keep stop and starting the recording!!
anyone knows any thing about that??
I own the Tascam X8 and the touchscreen is what sets it apart from everything else. Other UI (interfaces) are clumsy by comparison. For sheer ease of use, the X8 is superior. The X8 also seems to make very good recordings so far (I am new to it). Also, the X8 can be controlled from a smart phone or tablet by using a Bluetooth dongle that costs about $40.00. You can also add sound effects easily with the X8. So if you want to add reverb as a singer (which nearly every song recording does), you can easily do this with the X8. The X8 is a great recorder for dozens of reasons.
The X8 does have a memory card test. I haven't used it, but it has it in the menus.
What I haven't heard pointed out:
It can sync time code with ultrasync blue but you can't control it via Bluetooth at the same time.
Also the battery life for me is pretty bad. Build quality, hmmm, I dropped it once still seems to work but has cracks in the plastic.
Other than that, it's quite awesome!
@@pkolloch Yeah they are not made to be dropped - none of the hand-held recorders are. The Zoom H8 is even more breakable than the Tascam X8.
I would suggest that you buy a quality battery bank like Anker to power your Tascam X8. I have an Anker 10,000 mAmp rechargeable power bank that cost about $26.00 on Amazon and it will run the Tascam X8 several days on one charge. This saves a lot of trouble with replacing AAA batteries every nine hours.
You also can use a tone to sync your video with your audio.
@@franklong6269 Well, I am well aware of that they are not meant to be dropped :D But since it happened as a natural result, I am here to report the results.
You got 9h with batteries? That would be plenty for me. But I get more like 3h, it is weird, they a lithium ones. (with phantom powering mics, though, and bluetooth and whatever)
can you show me where is the internal memory?
@@ricr.4669 There is no internal memory. The Tascam X8 uses a micro-SD card to store music recordings. The card can be up to 512 GB, so it will store a huge amount of high-end audio if you use a large SD card.
Thank you for this great comparison! We're leaning towards the F3 to replace our DR-10X for DJ boards. It's not that much larger & the 32-bit float will certainly help for the DJ inputs that tend to be hot. I'll probably rig up a small shotgun mic to the second input for a 'safety track' in case the DJ is really blowing it with their mixing.
Love it!
What will you input for the other XLR?
Tascam x8 for me! Nice review Matt!
Did you buy one?
I just need something I can stick on a DJ setup and not worry about peaking at weddings.
I wonder if they purposefully leave the BT out for noise interference. Another radio signal to cause problems. So... it's probably more to do with that than say cost saving. You can shield that port, put the adapter in and it be shielded to only firing out of its plastic housing. Since I don't think the Tascam has WIFI built in. Edit: you can't live monitor due to latency issues. So your phone would literally be a few seconds behind whatever is being recorded making it practically useless. NOW if they offered wifi on it, they could do that with an ad-hoc connection.
I think they separated the BT chip from the recorders due to the current shortage of chips, this way they'll be able to ship out their recorders and still have BT connectivity once the supplies get back to normal hence why it is out of stock everywhere.
Good theory!
They don't allow live wireless monitoring because another company holds a patent on that in America. Even the Tentacle Sync recorders don't offer that in their US versions but it is available on units sold outside of the US. Basic business economics will tell you they didn't include the Bluetooth connectivity in the unit because it adds expense to a unit for a feature that not everyone may want or use. If you want it pay for it and if you don't need it then it keeps the product in their price point.
11:08 Yeah bluetooth monitoring would be so nice. Tired of using a cable. Can use a Sennheiser or Rode mic setup to monitor, but taking a whole transmitter for monitoring can be a cost. Any solutions a year later?
Simply connect a wireless mike tx to the output and monitor at the rx side. Can use DJI or Rode or other sets for that.
I have a question. I typically use the H6 but at max I only use 2 inputs but those capsules as a great extra for my sometimes use. Taking that into account I’m leaning towards the x8 but I’m so torn because I don’t tend to use more then 2 XLR. I’m so torn between these two. They both seem amazing but I just don’t know. Is that price difference worth it for the X8?
If you think you’ll use more than 2 I say go for the x8. It’s so good
@@whoismatt I think I’ll have to go for it then. Thanks for your videos. They have definitely been a massive help.
Hey Matt... when you said the rods on the zoom F3 are for connecting it to the strap for a boom pole, I was trying to picture that. What does that look like? The F6 has those rods too. I'm in the throes of deciding on a 32 bit float recorder and have watched your videos. The devil is in these details!
I feel like these 32bit float recorders have an issue with bass and lower tones.. So freaking awesome though but it lacks that richness that I have with my zoom h6 and my Sennheiser Mic..
No Pokemon. Not considering the Zoom f3 anymore. Thank you for telling us Matt
Here for the important facts
Matt, what shotgun mic were you using for the battery life test? I wanna get the NTG3 and Im wondering if the battery life would be similar to your test.
Cheers,
Chris
Deity S Mic 2. It’s great
@@whoismatt do you think using Panasonic Eneloop Pro Rechargeable AA 2550mAh with the F3 using 2 mics will get above 6 hr of battery life, normal Rechargeable AA are about 2000mAh only
Why would you go down to 24bit if the recorder is capable of 32bit? Only memory?
Hi Matt. You said the F3 doesn't show accurate sound levels on its LCD. How then can you be sure the output signal from the DJ isn't peaking? If the DJ is sending peaked audio then not even 32bit can save it.
You'll want to listen to the F3 with headphones and make sure it sounds good
@@whoismatt thank you
Tascam was always good for microphone..and quality is very good 👍 👌
Dear @whoismatt, I have a question about the F3 or actually the F6. Do you always have to start the audio recording on the audio recorder manually, or does the audio recorder start the recording automatically at the same time as the video camera (in my case Sony A7SIII)?Thanks!
You have to start it manually
@@whoismatt Thanks for your quick response. Happy Holidays!
In that price bracket? …. Undoubtedly the Tascam DR 60 D Mk ii. It fits on the tripod, under the camera. So you don’t have to even think about it. Great pre amps as well.
Does sample rate matter when recording externally? I would imagine that you would want your camera internal audio and external recording to be the same in order to sync properly? Thanks!
Yes you want the same sample rate
@@whoismatt why not a multiple? Would that not be better if you wanted to slow things down? (well, I guess one rarely does)
Anyways, I always put it to higher sample rates and I never notices strange artifacts in the audio (but also no improvement). ;)
You won't be able to monitor audio via Bluetooth because latency is still too high (although it's getting better with each new iteration of Bluetooth).
Coulde you do a test of the fairly new Zoom M3? It's a shotgun mic and a 32-bit recorder. Sounds promising - and maybe a bit too good to be true 😁☝️
Planning on it once I get get my hands on one
Man I wish the Bluetooth could wirelessly connect to a camera. Do you recommend a Bluetooth solution out of the headphone or line output?
You could definitely try it :)
I stictly got the f3 for the size in my minimalist kit. Otherwise would get the x8 for the inputs.
👍💪
The bluetooth monitoring thing is a patent issue that's been plaguing this segment for years.
I've seen the Tascam x8 for $399...it's extremely tempting.
I went with the F3
F1 FOR THE WIN, that's the best compact recorder they've ever made, and sure it's only 24bit 96kHz. While also including the ability to use the numerous capsule ecosystem available.
So if i line out of f3 to camera will my in camera backup be in 32bit float?.Thank You
No
Anyone know how many hours of audio you can record with 32bit float using a 64gb card? Or any other size of card for that matter?
I was wondering the same thing
For field recording, why do some audio guy just use the recorder build in stereo mic, if that is good enough, why need the XLR inputs then?
Some DJ even use Teenage Engineering device build in mic to record voice for music effect
Hey Matt - X8 owner here. I reached out to Tascam directly and asked them when they would be adding timecode support. They said that’s not in the plans, nor has it ever been. My current workaround is to hook up a tentacle sync to one of the channels and then make it a stereo mix (3-4 or 5-6) so I’ve got TC on left channel. Given the TC limitations on the F3 (BT ultra sync only) I might just go straight to the F6. Does F3 allow you to jam sync?
The X8 does sync time code with the ultrasync blue. You cannot control it via Bluetooth at the same time, though.
@@pkolloch Yeah, once I saw the TC solution on the X8, I sold it. I bought the F6 and it’s been incredible. So easy to use and keeps perfect TC for the day after I jam sync with my Tentacle Sync E. Using TC has cut my edit time in half.
@@RandumbTechhow has your experience been in the year since your comments above? Would you say the Zoom F6 combined with the Tentacle Sync E is the way to go for wedding videographers?
@@guywhitworth5764 The tentacle TC system is still the best out there in my opinion. Track E lav pack lasts all day and sync's up easily. I also picked up a Zoom M4 MicTrak and that has been great since it has the built-in mics similar to the X8 but also accepts TC in. Lots of great options out there now compared to a year ago for TC.
I have to ask, why is XLR-1/4" combo Inputs are so important to you?
Hey! A large portion of wedding DJs use 1/4” outputs, so having them on a recorder is a great benefit
X8 sounds fuller and richer to my ears (at least through sennheiser hd25 headphones)....
x8 should be compared to f6 rather than f3. but awesome comparison anyway thanks
Saved me trawling reddit for this exact answer!
I still have my gray brick gameboy With yellow version.
A true classic!
I want the lowest preamp noise-full stop!
even if it sounds bad? ;)
One thing I hate about the x8 is that you have to press record twice to actually record. I’ve had a few situations at weddings where I missed the speeches because of this. First you have to press record and pick the inputs you want selected. Then you have to press it again to actually record. The problem is if you remain on the input page it is not obvious that it is recording. You need to go to another page to see that it is recording.
i think you need to keep an eye away from the bride or groom a bit
@@ricr.4669 Its bad design. I never miss pressing record on my camera because there is a big red box that shows around the entire screen. I shouldn’t have to press record twice to record and then move to a different screen to confirm it’s actually recording.
@@apost099 what firmware are you using? are you sure you're using a Tascam x8?
@@apost099 I don't mean to be mean but if you're saying pressing record twice to record it means you don't own the X8.
@@ricr.4669 Your comment made me dig into the settings a bit. There is a setting called “record pause” that was toggled on in the “record settings” page of my X8. I turned this off and now it records on one click instead of two. So thanks for pointing this out.
Is there a shipping date for the F3?
Amazon has them in stock
They’re slowly trickling out to retailers
LOL "Hold on to your beard” and “Zoom doesn’t listen to my beard."
when i read F3 way back ... the first thing i thought is they had 3 inputs
Still waiting for zoom to release a handy recorder with 32bit float feature...
Your username is fitting
@@whoismatt I never thought about when I commented it but yeah surprisingly it is. lol
Did you end up buying any of these yourself?
Bluetooth adapters are ABSOLUTELY a money grab. Simply slapping a chip onto the motherboard would be way cheaper than engineering the socket for a multi-pin connector along with the door mechanism, molded cover, etc., for a removable dongle.
Can we take off the bars or maybe cut them off?
You could cut them? 😂
Great!!!
I'll use the F3 for the DJ board, can't see why I'd need more than 2 tracks anyway.
I wish I had watched this three days ago....
The F3 sounded audibly better in your test… imo
