This is not like the formula paintings Bob Ross created that so many artists around the world have come to love. My painting style is based on principles professional artists use like abstract color shapes, edge quality for greater realism, shadow and highlight, color theory or convincing color relationships and establishing correct values throughout the painting.
Most of my landscape painting is alla prima or wet on wet and created from plein air studies, imagination and digital reference photos.

About the Artist:
Learn from impressionist Bill Inman as he demonstrates how to breathe life into loose abstract color masses.
For more than 30 years he has been selling his work through galleries around the country as a full time artist.
He is classically trained with 5 years of figure and head drawing from the model; advanced pastel, watercolor and oil painting from life and holds an MFA in studio painting.
He is a recipient of the Congressional Art Award, has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and has his work in collections around the world.
These colors and techniques generally apply equally well with oil or acrylic paint.

After seeing the delicate and varied shapes of paint you touch down like a feather my painting appears as if I painted with a broom. Winter is on the way and I do have a fireplace, perhaps my works will burn well. Great work!

Thanks Bill. I like your approach to shapes within the artwork. This 'old barn' experience reminds me of my Grandfather's barn in Sydney which sadly has disappeared to make room for a university and a nature reserve - a possible plein air art excursion.

I enjoy hearing your comments while painting.... i love oil painting but I am very new at this. My husband refused to send me to France or any great school as i have zero back grown on Art..🤣😁.. Question, how do i get proportions of things like barns right. How should I divide the canvas or panel.? . I like painting outside better than pictures still i get overwhelm by how much i see. It took me one hour into the painting to realized the barns were way too big!! still the values, colors where decent..... I didn't want to trough away so is the dinner place-mat for my kittens. Thanks, I subscribed. I learned something warms/cools can be mix without thinking a paint has to be at least 80% warm or cool... is that right.??

Just returned a couple of weeks ago from a plein air convention in Santa Fa, over 1000 attendees and about 30 very good painters that were doing demos. You would have been a real asset to the staff of painters there. Perhaps you would consider applying for one of the annual conventions. Contact the Plein Air magazine if you are interested. I even bought some Rosemary brushes from Rosemary herself there. The conventions have been mostly in the southwest but next year in San Francisco. I've watched this demo of yours a couple of times now in preparation of painting a similar old barn in my area. I love your composition and may even try a high in the picture plane coi as you have here...it sure works well. Thanks again for your generosity in sharing.
Too bad that I wasn't aware that you were there and could have met you. Like yourself, I love discussing art and talking with other artist. Did get the opportunity to meet one of my all time favorite artist, David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw to have a short conversation and have them sign their book. A living legend among artist of many generations. I always buy the raw video of all the artist's demos that they sell at the end of the convention so that I can watch all the ones I missed through out the year. Will miss the next one because I enjoy going to San Francisco to see and enjoy San Francisco..that would be too much of a draw to make the proper decisions. Perhaps our paths will cross somewhere.
Years ago at a place where i worked, whenever i was working outside i would squint as i looked around at the scenery( trees, bushes, weeds, buildings etc) as if i was going to do a painting of it.
Then one day a guy i worked with said to me " YOU NEED GLASSES, YOUR ALWAYS SQUINTING ! "

Bill, how do you store your palette of paints between painting sessions? Do you scrape each of them up into a shallow box?
Is Walnut Oil really a substitute for mineral spirits?
I love the atmosphere in this painting, but my eye keeps being drawn to the brush stokes on the pathway. To me they do not match the completeness of the other elements in the painting and make it look unfinished.

This is probably a very unpopular thing to say but I'm going to do it anyway: I don't get these high speed painting videos. I'd so much rather see the entire thing, every single brush stroke and every moment of contemplation. The quick motion does nothing except reduce the experience to half an hour. Plus, the advancement of speed can't be helpful if someone wanted to paint along while watching the video (if s/he had the supplies/tools needed).
