I'm so glad you wear a face mask when you spray now. My dad ruined his sinus cavity finishing furniture without a mask. My brother in law developed a severe skin allergy working as a cabinet maker because he didn't wear gloves very often.
When trimming the leather using the xacto knife.. here's a suggestion: before you attempt to use the knife.. take a window screen bead roller (2 shapes). Run the bead roller along the edge (line) making an impression of where you are to trim. This will help you to make a better cut.
Just wanted to say how incredibly thankful I am for you and anyone who puts their stuff on UA-cam. I love watching anything real people make. I look forward to getting off work and watching real people. It’s pretty spectacular and I appreciate what you do so thank you.

I love those tables. What a blast from the past. I had no idea you could still acquire new leather for the tops of tables. Thanks for this video, your training and techniques are so informative and great to watch.

These tables are considered antiques in the United States. These type tables were very popular in the 1900s. I have some that are family heirlooms. I am very thankful to see that the tables can be repaired.
I had two almost identical to these that I bought years ago from an older neighbor when she downsized and moved. At that time, I loved traditional furniture, but not so much anymore. I’m really intrigued by restoring older pieces with a new twist on them. For these, I loved the color of the stripped mahogany! I’d love that, I think, with just a lacquer finish to protect the wood. Not sure what color I’d use if I bought new leather. I’ve only got one left-my kids are grown now and when they were little they managed to destroy one of them. Of course, now that I’m restoring older pieces I’m second guessing tossing that one. I probably could have made it acceptable. Anyway, yes, these were a very common type of table in the first few decades of the 20th century, considered formal. Really a cool concept, leather on a table top.
Yes, I have a coffee table similar to these pieces with gold-embossed leather tops. Mine was made by Heritage Henredon, probably in the 1950s or ‘60s. They probably made these tables, too. Leather-topped tables were very popular during that period. Mine needs a full restoration now, after decades of use in a cat household!
Thanks so much! I'm just a beginner practicing on furniture left on the curb for bulk waste pick-up by the city. I learn something new every time I watch your "How To" videos. Beautiful work. I have 1 old leather topped mahogany side table and I'm afraid to work on it. Yet, having a professional refinisher could cost a few hundred dollars or more.
Hi, just wanted to say, amazing videos! Your confidence is inspiring even when faced with difficult repairs. I don't believe I've watched all of your videos yet but I noticed your not using a HVLP sprayer. Could you possibly comment on that in a video and if you have time a quick spray pattern set up ...I understand different products will require fine tuning. Thank you and keep up the excellent videos I suspect your subscribers are going to skyrocket. PS the care you take with each customers piece shows the pride in your work.
Hi Jerry. Thanks so much for watching. So I do use HVLP guns. They are hooked up to my compressor through a regulator I usually keep just below 20psi. I don't have a turbine setup or anything. I have a few different ones but I think my favourite gun is my older devilbiss. Thank you for your interest!
Trenna, you do some amazing work. I’ve always liked building furniture but when it came to finishing I was less enthusiastic.. I actually seemed to enjoy stripping and refinishing more than finishing new furniture.
I am impressed with how you take in your stride obviously tedious tasks like trimming that leather. (viz. the detailing work of the warped chest project.) I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for making them.
Such beautiful tables! I've not seen you do leather work before, but then I haven't watched all of your videos. The owners will be proud, I think. I would be! 🙂👍
My late uncle did this all the time made the leather inserts and fitted them, I am pretty sure he used a paste made from flour and water ( and probably some secret ingredient ) is that real gold leaf. we call them a nest of tables
Rather you than me cutting that leather, I would be shaking. I love the colours of the wood and the leather. Very out of fashion in the UK, but then I suppose it depends on what kind of home you have.
Hi Trena , thanks for sharing your talent and techniques. I learn a little something from all of your videos and look forward to watching your channel grow. Now , you snuck that leather in with no details on how you procured them , I'm sure I'm not the only person that wants to know . Local , Internet, did you have to provide templates ? Link maybe ? Thanks in advance , keep up the great videos.
Thanks for watching! I order my leather tops from DCT Leathers in Toronto Canada. I did have to send templates for the curved edge tables but not for the square tables. they have a pretty good website that pops up on google.
Hi, my dad has similar tables just sitting around in a pile in the basement and I was thinking of taking them down to natural finish. But the leather is green. Is there a video about replacing the leather?
Awesome work. I made a set of these in my shop but did not have access to an embossing. Really classes them up. I will probably remove the leather from mine and find a place that can do that for me. One of my favorite techniques is inlay and most of my work has some inlay in it. Turbines are great for larger projects such as cabinets that i have redone in peoples homes. Compressors are fine with smaler jobs as a sustained spray is not an issue.
@@johnsfurniturerepair Sorry if i implied it was not. I agree. It is sufficient. I have no idea what compressor setup you use. So would not be able to comment to your capacity. My comment was more aimed in general to my experience and to others i have seen use compressors too small with inadequate cfm output. I will never comment in the negative unless i see something jacked or stupid. From your content that i have seen that would be highly unlikely. On another positive note i commend you for replying to comments as much as you do. Not sure how you find the time. Full time tedious job, filming, loading, editing posting, reading comments replying. Phew! My hats off.
I’m so happy I found you here. I need your advice please? I picked up from the side of the road 2 night stands with drawers. One drawer front/face is slightly bent out of shape. So I’m assuming water and a heat gun may fix that back into a straight front? And how do I restore the leather top? It’s cracked and has a few burn marks. It also has little casters/wheels (sorry don’t know the correct name) that are very oxidized. Are these 2 pieces restorable? Is it worth restoring? They were terribly dirty when I picked it up.

I absolutely love your channel! I rescued from a dumpster a small square federal side table probably from Duncan Phyfe era I would like to strip the failing finish and see what the natural wood is like. There is a leather inlay that has that signature yellow/ gold tone to it. I have never worked with the leather before. Could I change the color of that leather or strip it? Or am I destined to have it the way it is? There isn’t anything wrong with it other than the color. Thanks for all your content it is so helpful!😊
Looks great! I am always very reluctant with applying dark stain. How long do you let it sit before wiping off the excess? I think I am too quick most of the time.
@johnsfurniturerepair Trena they turned out lovely. I need to refurbish an antique poker table. Initially I was thinking inlay because I want to add a chess and backgammon board to add more use to it. Now that I'm seeing this video I'm wondering about leather. Those leather covers look custom. Can you please tell me where you got them? Also what would be proper cleaning for those tables?
