Nice thing is that this gun will never get worn out. It either doesn't run long enough, or it will be routinely returned to get repaired and always be a "new" gun. 😂 Hard pass for me. Even at 80% reliability. A $3K firearm should be 100% flawless.

    • @WVGunsNGoats

It really should, thats why i used the Car analogue, Cars cost even more money than this gun does, and they can have problems pop up that aren't expected, you just have to address them one at a time, and why i gave it my final verdict of "Range toy" because its not ready to be used for anything more serious (Atleast this one isnt, Results may vary.)

Money doesn’t equal reliability and never has. This is a completely US made reverse engineer by one guy. It will take time to make it perfect. Sig Sauer has thousands of employees and has a higher failure rate with launches and no one really bats an eye.

@@calebfuller9591Yep, and Tommy has way better customer support than any manufacturer. The problem is, he doesn't bother with PR or marketing, because he's basically a one man show. He does low volume, high margins and supports his customer to the ends of the earth. It suits him, and he clearly finds success in his venture. But this launch gained so much attention over the past 6 months, a lot of people are coping with the combined disappointment of missing a chance to own a unicorn, and not knowing the first thing about Tom Bostic or his insane contributions to the gun world. So they instead enjoy the schadenfreude and sagely make comments about how they're glad they didn't waste their money on it. As if they even had a snowball's chance of buying one.

The issue I'm having is the excuse that "It's a one man shop!" That's makes the issues worse in my opinion. He should have tested every single gun sent out with all four types personally if it's that small of an operation.

Glad yours is going better! Mine started having some more issues (after I touted as mine having zero issues, which it did at first). Regardless, Tom sent me a new bolt, takedown pins, and front end cap! Can’t wait to try it out now!
One thing I did after a while, was after every mag, I would spray the chamber with dry lube. The gun would shoot flawless until the next mag. I’m hoping the new bolt he sent me will alleviate me from having to do this. Otherwise, I’ll likely try a light coat of lube on all the ammo, as I’ve done for other finicky guns.
I still love mine, regardless of issues I’m working through. My G36 runs like a sewing machine, so I entrust some of the growing pains will subside with time. Just like cars I’ve had with recalls, it sucks, but if you want the car, you have to manage!

Are the take down pins surrounded by polymer at the friction points, or has he used a steel insert in the polymer?
IMO, he should be using steel inserts with an inner ring that seats into a recess in the take down pin when it's fully seated.

    • @WVGunsNGoats
      @WVGunsNGoats  3 місяці тому +1

No, they were just polymer on the sides of the receiver passing through an aluminum rear block.

    • @floorpizza8074
      @floorpizza8074 3 місяці тому

@@WVGunsNGoats Yikes. The constant back-and-forth of that aluminum rear block under recoil WILL eventually make the points where the pins pass through the polymer oblong. It's not a matter of "if," but "when."
He really needs to consider a redesign of the receiver with metal inserts for the take down pin pass-through points, as well as the suggested pin retention method in my first post.
While it is good to hear that he is providing great customer service, it would seem as if he still isn't aware of some engineering flaws that still exist in his design. I hope he continues to iterate on his design, and "make good" with his customers as these issues are addressed.
I think it would save him money in the long run if he hired a firearm design engineer to look at his plans and suggest potential fixes to existing flaws; a second set of eyes can be very helpful in seeing things that would otherwise go overlooked.

Don't take this wrong. IMO That gun isn't worth $3,500.00 dollars. Has nothing to do with TommBuilt and being a MP7 Clone. To me spending that kind of money to have clone no matter the producer is just to say I have "A" whatever it may be. I can think of a lot of guns that far surpass that being a Range toy and also the Ammo side of it even pushes me a lot farther away from it. Nice gun, Yes very much so, Cool Yes, fun I am sure it is. This is just me and has nothing to do with other peoples likes and dislikes. I stay on the practical side and have always been one to run from Band Wagons and the likes because most all are money grabbers far exceeding their worth {For Me}. @@paulis7319We're not anywhere near having the NFA repealed. We've literally taken 3 steps back and 2 steps forward. People forget that all the crap the SCOTUS is overturning didn't exist 2-3 years ago. It's great they're being pushed back, but we've gained zero ground, just minimized the losses. Second, the legality of full auto is not the reason HK won't export the MP7, G36, UMP, etc. They have semi auto only MP7s they sell to the UK police. It's German government regs that prevent export of firearms with 'no sporting purpose.' I believe the MP5/k are old enough to be exempted, or perhaps it's the caliber. But even if the NFA were toppled tomorrow, HK wouldn't export MP7s to anyone intending to sell them to civilians, and demo samples and LEO surplus would still run about the same prices, which are $30-50k. You might see some batches where someone is able to get a batch imported for a legitimate contract and 'accidentally' have some surplus to sell, but I'd guess that'd mean loss of HK dealer status when they figure it out.
As for the quality of the T7, mine broke in in 50 rounds, I was able to diagnose and solve all functionality issues I had which were related to it being a small batch polymer receiver and were expected. Anyone speaking negatively about the hiccups and break in period vs price, I welcome them to buy the $20k parts kit off HKParts or gun broker, then send it to Tommy with about $1k for parts and labor and he'll make you a T7 with a bit more hand fitting for you. Or, if you won the lottery on getting one of these 500 units, he'll hand fit it for free if you have problems and ask.
People get the misconception that Tommybuilt is like Kel Tec or PSA. It's not. It's primarily one guy who does most of the work himself, and contracts out manufacturing in some cases. I see so many people referring to Tommybuilt as an entity, when people who know anything refer to him as an individual. There's a reason no one else is doing these conversions or attempting a clone correct MP7. It's insanely difficult to reverse engineer/re-engineer and expensive to produce.

A few observations from a T7 owner who did their research before trying to buy a bespoke $3500 reverse engineered gun from a batch of 500. First of all, this isn't a $3500 gun, it's a $3500 MP7. There's a difference, let me explain it. If you want a PDW, get a PS90, an MP9, MP5K, or even something like a Ruger LC Charger one of Kel Tec's offerings or a PSA MP57 when they release in a few years. If you want an MP7, this is your cheapest option. Period. Your other options are buying a $20k-30k parts kit, which come available from time to time, and then sending it to Tommybuilt where Tom will build you a new T7 receiver, and insert all the non-serialized MP7 factory parts, rigorously hand fitting it. He will also work with you if you run into any issues with it. Your other option is to acquire SOT status, build and maintain a business to justify it, then purchase a post sample of an MP7, which will cost somewhere in the realm of $50k.
So, saying you can buy x gun or y gun for $3500 and it works is like someone saying they don't want a Ferrari because their Tesla Model S is faster and more reliable and cost half as much. That's fine. Some people don't want a Tesla. We're also not talking about something that's available. This is equivalent to someone building a clone correct LaFerrari in their garage by hand and selling it for literally 1/10th the price If your dream is owning a LaFerrari, you might just be willing to work with the guy and deal with some break down or break in issues if it cost you $200k rather than $2million. (fun fact, there were 499 LaFerraris made. That's one fewer than the T7.)
One of the main issues I see with this is, it's Tom's first attempt at a production run of more than a few dozen. I believe he did two runs of 250, but he might have done one run of 500, and sold them in two batches. Either way, this is all we're getting for the foreseeable future. His limiting factor was HK gas blocks, because it's one of the few parts he's importing for it. Most of it he's hired out for small batches of parts for bolts, carriers, firing pins, etc. not to mention the receiver, whose complexity is the obvious cause of the malfunctions/extended break in period. As a primarily one man operation, he can't hand fit 250 guns and get them out within the year. He also isn't an operation like PSA, with production facilities, engineers, R&D teams and alternate income streams to fund product development. The cost of a complex mold like the one required for the T7 is likely around the $100k mark, possibly more. If he made multiple molds, do the math. That's a lot to offset for a year or two while you polish up your production run. Even more of a stretch when you consider that he's guaranteed 500 units, and no more unless he finds a way to manufacture gas blocks domestically.
As for why none of us who have working guns have uploaded videos, some have. Some are in short form content, some aren't on UA-cam, but you have to remember that there are 500 units. 500 people have this gun, so a 1% upload rate and 1% failure rate are both plausible. I have several videos of my gun functioning, but I value my privacy and have them in an unlisted location. I'll link them here, because I do feel strongly that the current selection of videos don't necessarily represent the average experience. Short of the initial 50 rounds break in.
    imgur.com/2T8PpT7
    imgur.com/asOfefm
    imgur.com/1AqsIPo
Let me describe my break in period. First, I fully expected this gun to be hand built. I was actually surprised with how quickly mine wore in initially. Granted, it did what I always do, cleaned and oiled the gun and then dry cycled it for probably 100 cycles before I ever shot it. The first 50 rounds of ammo finished the break in. The one hiccup I ran into was a ruptured primer on the S&B getting in the bolt and jamming it closed, like was shown here. This only happened once and only with the S&B, so I feel confident that's an ammo issue, not a gun issue. After my break in period, I sent it to Tommy with a concern over one tolerance between the carrier and the HK end plate. He widened it for me and sent it back a day later. I consider most guns to be broken in at around 200-500 rounds. Up to that point, I expect some tolerance related issues like failure to feed, extract, eject, stovepipes, etc. If I encounter these after the 500 round mark, I consider it to be an issue. After 100 rounds and a trip back to Tommy, I've had fewer malfunctions than my P365 XL Specter (a SIG 'custom shop' gun that cost around a grand) but seeing as that gun is under 200 rounds as well, I don't expect anything else from it. Guns are machines, machines have tolerances, tolerances open under use. Everything has a break in period, from your car to your generator to your $4k 2011. Sometimes the company will run some sort of break in for you, if they assume the client isn't responsible or knowledgable enough to do it themselves. This isn't a merit of the cost of the item, it's more a company specific decision. Some people don't want a gun with 500 rounds through it from the factory. Some do. As for what caused these rough edges, it's due to the T7 being a clone correct copy of the MP7, a German masterpiece that they developed starting in 1989 and finally released in 2003. Tom took this gun, reverse engineered it piece by piece and spent years testing and iterating on it. The most complex aspect is the monolithic polymer receiver. It has metal reinforcements and bearing surfaces molded in place in the frame, and while I'm sure HK took advantage of their decade of development time to automate the process of injection molding and precisely trimming the flashing from the inside of the receiver, Tom didn't have that option without ballooning the price to something closer to a parts kit build. The price you pay for that 90% discount is having a gun that jams for the first 50-100 rounds.
I'll now detail my experience with Tom Bostic. It's been the best customer service I've ever received. First contact was after my range day at 6pm on a Saturday. He emailed back within 10 min offering to send me a new bolt or a shipping label when I relayed my issue with the bolt jamming closed from the primer. I accepted the replacement parts but ended up sending them back when I sent the gun in for him to check over a week later after my break in was complete. As I said, he turned my gun around in a day and got it back to me within a week.
Here are my thoughts on the gun, why it's got issues, whether the issues should or could have been addressed prior to launch. I have no inside knowledge of Tommybuilt, nor do I own any of his conversions. I, like many, saw this as a rare chance to get a unicorn and jumped at it. I feel lucky to be one of the few people who got one, and luckier still to have one that was an easy break in. My background is in aerospace engineering, and I've got several products and ideas I'd like to bring to market at smaller scales. This launch/reception is basically my worst nightmare from that standpoint. I don't think Tom intentionally sent out lemons, just like he clearly didn't plan for the website to crash back in May. He said that they stress tested the site with 20k visitors the week before launch, and it handled it fine. But at 7:50 that Friday, 200k people were attempting to access the T7 sale page. The site was automatically taken down by the host as a DDoS attack, and it took them 30 min to restore it. Upon restoration, 40k-50k people were able to add the T7 to their carts before it sold out in a matter of minutes. Reminder, there were 500 units total, I believe around 150-250 units were sold that first batch based on stock numbers shown. My serial number is under 250, but later in the numbers, which I believe is partly why my unit broke in easier. Remember what I said about machinery requiring a break in? That applies to injection molds as well. I know for a fact he molded the RAL8k receivers first, which likely explains the loose pins and some of the other issues exhibited in the few YT vids available. My thoughts on the reception are as follows: A lot of people are just becoming aware of Tommybuilt within the last 6 months. It seems few of those people know of his work, his reputation for customer support, or what I would call reasonable expectations for what is essentially a coach built firearm. People are also forming their opinions on a 1% sample size of youtubers, one of whom has shown a real disdain for putting any effort into solving any problems he encounters and merely expresses his perceived entitlement due to the price tag of the gun previously only available for $25k-30k. Couple that with the fact that there are around 199,500 people who were interested enough in it to show up to the launch, and around 49,500 who are severely disappointed the weren't able to successfully check out with one. These people seem to be happy to bask in the schadenfreude of watching someone struggle with, and in some cases regret purchasing, a sought after item they missed out on. They're more than happy to make statements about how they're glad they didn't waste their money, or they intended to buy one, but no longer intend to. I once heard someone observe that it's far easier to say "It's bad, I don't want it" than it is to say "I can't afford it" or "I missed the opportunity to buy one." I'd say this phenomenon is on full display here. Due to the number of people disbelieving anyone who defends Tom Bostic, or purports to own a working example of a T7. Even with video evidence, the replies I've received range from 'you only fired x rounds,' 'you only fired one magazine,' 'you're the only person I know of who has one working, therefore, 99% of units failed.' etc, etc. I see these as coping mechanisms to salve the disappointment of a missed opportunity.

Do you have proof that he is only making 500 of them after spending multiple years and lots of money developing it and than having the molds made for the receiver and other parts. There is no indication on his page of this being limited to a 500 run gun, only possibly that the first 500 have German made gas blocks with all other parts being us made, Then after the 500 he will most likely have the gas blocks made in the US for them. Theres no reason to invest all that money into a gun you're only selling 500 of, and then only charging 3500.00 for it if thats the amount of them you are making total.
Also theres no numbering system on them (besides the serial number), and I believe he has done numbered releases of all his limited production firearms in the past.
Also with the rumors of his parts supplier for the T36 guns cutting ties with him, he will have to continue making the T7 as that would be his only product he has left to produce.
And if hes only ever producing 500, then there would have been much more of a perogative to make sure that they all function 100% since its such a limited number.
Also, you say yours had a pierced primer issue as well, That makes three of these guns with pierced primers as i know another guy who's gun had an issue with primer remnants ending up in the firing pin channel and locking it up, so that could possibly be more of a gun issue with multiple people running into it.

Tommy’s words. He left the door open to making more in the future, but nothing certain. He had 500 gas blocks for this first run, subsequent runs subject to him getting more gas blocks. He did mention potentially making gas blocks domestically. But he mentioned it as a possibility rather than a certainty. As I said, Tommy does low numbers and high margins, which is just basic business practice. Price out most of the demand, so you can keep up with it. That’s why I don’t think he really cares so much what the average redditor thinks about it and doesn’t do any PR. He takes care of his customers, whose testimony bring in enough new customers so he doesn’t need to pander to the masses.
As for parts suppliers, I heard that he just switched to a new supplier, which would likely cover the T7 and his other conversions. For small batch parts like this, it’s likely just some machine shop with a 5 axis CNC he can give a CAD file/drawing to.
I think the $3500 price makes him profitable with 500 units. If he got two molds for a total of $200k, that’s $400 per unit to offset it. Injection molding itself is cheap, then a grand to get the parts machined, labor for assembly and he’s got decent profit margins. I think he didn’t anticipate the demand being as high as it was/is. He has also mentioned doing a preorder period after the final sale of the first batch, to gauge interest and get a hard number on how many he needs. That would offset or justify the cost of setting up production and QA. He can leave the price the same and have even better margins on any further batches that he can produce.
This is also his first run of more than a dozen or so guns, to my knowledge so he’s obviously learning from it. As for making sure they all worked, I don’t think the number that had serious issues is as high as people think. That or people aren’t shooting them, which is a possibility. They’re selling for between $6k and $10k on Gunbroker, which indicates demand is still high. Even with more production runs in the future. I don’t ever see him meeting the total demand.
As for the primer, I had it happen once with S&B and have since mainly been shooting Fiocchi, so I’d argue it’s either entirely on the S&B primers, or split blame between soft primers and a long firing pin. I’m not a gun smith though.

Hey, i shot an email to Tommy, he says they ran 500 to start and plan on running more parts to continue production, so it sounds like a standard offering now, do you still have your brass from shooting with the new bolt head, could you take a pic of the primers on your spent brass, the ones that i have show obvious signs of cratering which leads me to believe there may be a tolerance issue between the size of the firing pin and the firing pin hole that the primer material is flowing in to.
I can send a photo if you can supply an email address, it would be interesting to see of the brass you have with your new bolt head exhibits the same signs.

@@WVGunsNGoatsI’d assume that’s dictated by gas block availability, rather than being something anyone can buy from his site on a whim. That’s been my impression when I looked at buying his stuff prior to the T7. Either send him a base gun and commission one, or get lucky when he puts up a small batch.
I did see he put the T7 survey back up, which implies he either sourced more blocks, or is trying to gauge interest to start manufacturing them. Still, I don’t see him being able to meet demand unless he full on sets up a production facility. But still, I’m all for him making more. I have friends who want one, and more units means more fixes. Maybe we’ll get the opportunity to upgrade to a T7A1 in a year or two that fixes any latent or recurring issues that might crop up. I’m happy so far though. My break in was shorter than I expected, so the T7 is in my bag carry gun lineup now.
I didn’t pick up my brass, so I’ll try to remember to grab some next time I go out there to shoot. I’d relay your concern to Tommy, he’d probably send you a new bolt, if he hasn’t already replaced it. Might also be the firing pin.
