I heard this dude has a stand up routine and kills it. If he ever makes it to your country on future world tours, be sure to get tickets before they sell out. That’s what I hear at least. ❤
I played a lot of Arkanoid in the arcades in the 80s and even some on my Atari ST. The arcade was of course perfect, but the Atari ST port was very good too. Unfortunately there was no special controller for the ST, but the mouse can be used so you don't have to use digital controls if you don't want to. Not as good as the arcade controls, but miles better than digital (joysticks, dpads, keyboard). I don't have much experience with Arkanoid 2, but Arkanoid 1 was easily one of the...two such type of games I ever really liked. The other was Impact. A game I also played on the Atari ST, though I believe it had other ports too. Thanks for another fun video.
I'm a sucker for gaming peripherals, but I have a love/hate for block breakers. So even with ample opportunity, I've never grabbed the Vaus controller bundle of Arkanoid. Actually, I've played Arkanoid clones but I've never played a proper Arkanoid game. D'oh!
The documentary movie does show him pretty much been paid 100$ for the game and using Wozniak to make the game, saying they will split 50/50 by telling him he is getting paid 50$. So yeah he was an asshole
The blue pill extends the Vaus. That joke writes itself. The pills always remind me of Mike & Ike's for some reason. The weirdest thing about the Arkanoid box is the very random "Win a free family vacation" offer on the back.
Elaborating on the story If my understanding is correct, according to the Japanese Wikipedia entry for Arkanoid, the Moai-inspired Dimensional Fortress "DOH" destroyed the mothership "Arkanoid" and entrapped the escaping "Vaus" ship in a pocket dimension it created. "DOH" seems to be an abbreviation for the "Dominate Over Hour(s)" time lord, and upon defeating it the Vaus ends up undoing the timeline up to the point before the Arkanoid was destroyed by DOH. Side note: there seems to have been a design mistake involving the hit counter and points earned for striking DOH (1,000 points per hit, 16 hits to kill), and there is an established high-score strategy of repeatedly striking the entity 15 times and dying intentionally to rack up 15,000 points per life. Anyway, in the second game DOH began to revive and made the space passenger ship, "XORG", into its base of operations, but the "Vaus2" left its own space cruiser, "MIXTEC", to confront the XORG (maybe they got a distress call?). While en route the defensive systems of the Vaus2 defeated some enemies and caused their "brains" (figuratively speaking?) to flee but these brains turned out to be the means to finish reviving DOH. Destroying these brains and the XORG allows the Vaus2 to return safely to the MIXTEC. The third game's story seems to be about a repeat loop of the first game caused by a revenge-seeking DOH. (So now we have a "who destroyed whom first?" chicken-and-egg scenario) The fourth game is entitled "Arkanoid: Doh It Again", but I've made this long-winded enough. By the way, I once had to make and design a 8x8 LED game for a class using a "twisty knob" (a "potentiometer" in my case). It was an endless side-scrolling shmup where gaining life increased the level and speed of enemies, but losing life would decrease the level and speed of enemies. The twisty knob in my game controlled the player ship's vertical positioning.
Arkanoid's from that classic arcade era where the concept is simple and entertaining, so anybody can pick it up and see what it's about. But having the powerups makes it a lot more fun than the bland Breakout game my dad had on Intellivision.
I played a lot of Arkanoid on my famiclon when i was a kid, never beat it of course. I never knew there was a special controller for that, love learning new things like this.
I found the vaus a few years back on ebay for 10 bad bucks (for parts use.) But it turns out it just needed a little calibration. Gave the seller a BIG 5 stars.
I’ve been told the SNES Arkanoid is really good and is compatible with the SNES mouse. As long as you can deal with old school ball mouses, it’s quite a time.
Man, i do like this game. Lazer is my fav pill. This genre is like rts for me, starts promising, gets overwhelming fast (those multiballs guaranteed losing). I always wanted not just the controller for this one, but the big box too. Prices tho, yikes! Fun video, I've missed them.
Which game caused more thumb damage from the d-pad? Arkanoid 2 or Bigfoot? Me and my brother would give ourselves thumb blisters trying to get the upper hand in Bigfoot.
I used to have Arkanoid and the Vaus controller way back when (have since sold it). As you mentioned, the controller has a potentiometer, so it has a hard stop at the left and right wall. As such, when I got the pink power up capsule, I could NOT get the ship to go through it as shown in 6:10. If I used the screwdriver to adjust more to the right, my ship would then leave a gap at the left wall. Did I just have a flawed controller, or was I missing something?
Oh man, good question. There must be a sweet spot. I think you can leave a little gap on the left wall and be okay but honestly, pink capsules are so rare, I didn't get a chance to test that out much.
@@NESFriend Thank you! Even though I don't have the controller or game anymore, this has always been one of those things that lives rent free in my brain. :D
Recently the Twitch channel BestofNES had a week-long marathon where every member of their community, and anyone else who wanted to get involved, tried to beat every licensed NES game (and a few others) in the span of a week. Yes, including the Miracle Piano. They managed to do it, but one of the games they had the most trouble with was Destination Earthstar, so maybe you can honor their struggle by showcasing it some time. Also, apparently I was the only one who beat the entire Ninja Turtles trilogy.

That's a good-ass way to get pinned
In college I shared a house with some guys and they had a NES and an N64. Used to play this (with the spinny controller) and Goldeneye a bunch.
Well! I learned a lot about this game. I thought there was nothing to it but breaking blocks.

I just noticed the old school aspect ratio. Pretty good!
I doubt Jobs had anything to do with creating Breakout. He probably just tricked Wozniak into doing the work and took credit as he was want to do.
The guy was completely non-technical so I don't see how he could have done anything with breakout.
The documentary movie does show him pretty much been paid 100$ for the game and using Wozniak to make the game, saying they will split 50/50 by telling him he is getting paid 50$.

True!
Everyone knows the truth that Woz was fully responsible, the story has been around for years
Anyone else feel as though our NES Friend was a touch more manic in this episode?
Having some fun out here
Long as you are doing good, my man.
I thought that NESFriend was channeling Lewis Black in some moments. I thought it jazzed up the video.
"You can just push it anytime you want to. It's a button." Man, that's a truth as old as time. I dig it.
Amazing quote and it's the truth. With so much lies and propaganda around these days, its good to see an undeniable truth ❤

Guess how they formed that family? Blue pills. Circle of life
@@NESFriend And starting a family requires alot of "Doh"...get it? I made a funny.
Breakout and Super Breakout for the Atari 2600 with the paddle controller!
It’s always a good day when there is a new NESfriend video in the feed.
Ah, thanks!
@@NESFriendyou're my friend just like the NES is your friend 😂❤

Honestly people need to realize that despite the jokes here, you really held back on the number of times you said "balls"
I knew you'd respect my struggle

I’ve taken the mystery space pills and love your content!
If that's what it takes, I'm all for it
this game reduced the size of my swizzle stick
You'll have that
Surely there's a rom hack that adds Vaus controller to the sequel? Guess it's not a review of the original then
Love your channeling of Bobcat Goldthwait in this video
Shatter, a modern Breakout clone, has a superb soundtrack!

Interesting - didn't know it worked with the mouse. Will have to check it out!
Bouncing balls? Twisty knobs? Are you sure you're talking about a video game? 😊
I'm never sure.
Does anyone ever trying to speed run these games? Haha.. have a great day!

Popo means booty in German. So "Opopo" means "Oh, booty", my favorite pickup line that has worked zero percent so far.
keepem coming!!

It's definitely Bigfoot dude, good call. That game ruined my thumb so hard, it's the only part of me that believes in cryptids.
Always be skeptical of space pills 😂
Indeed. Don't fall for it like I did.
