    Really love that your journey had some ups and downs and wasn't perfect, straight A's the whole way. The people who have done everything right start to finish from high school to CRNA are honestly not inspiring and I am so much more drawn to people who have a weak spot and can show how they've overcome and grown from it. Your story sounds very similar to mine and I know the GPA I had prior to starting nursing school is going to be the weakest point of my application. You have given some good ideas on how I can frame that weak point to show it's not the student I am today and how I can strengthen the other areas of my application. Thank you !!

    wow so I kinda have been feeling bad that I waited until 23 to start school but honestly, I didn't think that 3.0 would hurt you? great advice. I am at a community college I plan on transferring when I have the required amount of credits to go to uni then apply to nursing school. But CRNA is the goal. Yeah when I started community college, I lost my brother in a car accident. I was pretty much dead inside for a long while and I got an F in every course due to not going to classes anymore. A few years later and I am back and in nursing school. It was sure a battle to retake every class and Ace it to prove to the school I can do it. And I did and got into nursing school. My GPA has greatly improved but it is still like yours. 3.04 GPA so far. I hope to raise it by the time I graduate.

    Can you do a video on the future of anesthesia or healthcare in general, like how would AI affect it? Would be be worth the investment to work towards becoming a CRNA if we are in the beginning of this journey?

    • @TheSchoellerFamily
      @TheSchoellerFamily  6 років тому +4

      That is a very interesting topic! If you are passionate about anesthesia then yes! I definitely think you should go for it. AI can only do so much at this point. Anesthesia requires a lot of critical thinking and decision making based on past experiences. I don't see AI interfering with our jobs during my lifetime, anesthesia is just too complex. I'm not a tech expert lol so that is just my opinion. We do robotic surgeries in the OR in the sense that a surgeon uses a "robot" to do the actual procedure but he/she sits at a computer and controls the robotic the entire time. Sort of like a video game. It doesn't function independently.

    This is super inspiring because I am in the same predicament that you were in at the start of you college journey. I started school when I was 18 and didn’t care about my grades and didn’t know what I want to do and I ended up just getting my bachelors degree in health science because I didn’t know if I want to do nursing and I knew my grades weren’t good enough to get into nursing school. I became a CNA right after getting my bachelors and was offered a job right out of CNA school as a PCT at a local hospital, which was my goal. I felt so happy and I absolutely love what I do right now. I’m now going back to school in the fall to take some pre-requisite courses at a community college and then am re-applying to the college that I received my bachelors degree from to raise my GPA a little bit and hopefully be accepted into their ABSN program. My dream is to work at a larger hospital’s ICU 😊

    This video is so helpful! I am in my junior year of nursing school in Nashville so I've been starting to think about what my next step is after I graduate with my BSN. Since the beginning of undergrad, I have wanted to be an CRNA, but I'm a little nervous now because I made a B in both Intro and Patho. They were very high Bs (in the 90s but on the tough grading scale they are Bs) but I feel as if the schools I apply for will not be focusing on that. My plan is to do a nurse residency at Vanderbilt in the ICU when I graduate. Crossing my fingers it will all work out. ANY WAY, thank you for making this video! It was so helpful in clearing the air about the whole process. Wishing you the best of luck!

Things I love about it: the amount of stuff I am learning, managing patients throughout complex cases, growing as a nurse, learning to work autonomously, following patients (through pre-op, surgery and post-op), responding to codes/traumas, seeing different stuff every day and being around motivated people!

    I went into nursing wanting to be a NP. As a new grad I wasn’t able to get a job in any ICUS so I started on a medsurg floor for about a year. After that I tried applying a few ICUS again but they wouldn’t take me because I didn’t have acute care experience. I ended up applying to the ER to see if they would take me and to my surprise they did. I ended up liking the ER and I decided to peruse a degree in ACNP to hopefully work in the ED, urgent care, or really just any acute setting. I’m currently 1 year into my ACNP program and I’m starting experience concerns if I made the wrong career choice mainly because in Florida NP is a saturated degree. It’s hard to get a job as an new grad NP because everyone wants you to have experience and I hear the starting pay is $50/hr. So I’ve thought about quitting my program and starting all over. Applying to the ICU, taking my GRE, CCRN and maybe bio/organic chem. But the thought of doing all that put my mind in distress because I’m 27 now and it seems like such a long ride just to apply. 😩 I also struggle in math so I know I’m going to need a tutor to do well on the math portion of the GRE . You did it the right way.

    Hello Rihanna, I love your story! I am in my 2nd year of nursing school in Canada and I hope to move to the US once I’m done and passed the NCLEX. I am very much interested in becoming a CRNA which is why in determined to move to the States. Please could you do a video on how people who studied from outside America, say Canada, can come in? Like are schools very much willing to accept those of us who studied outside? Thank you

    I just came across your channel and after watching this video I subscribed almost immediately lol!
    I am currently applying to a nursing program at a two year community college, which also happens to have a coenrollment program in place that allows students in the nursing program to get their bachelors degree at the same time. My ultimate goal is to also become a CRNA, so I was just wondering what you would suggest as to what I should do following passing the NCLEX and getting my bachelors degree or if there is anything I should be doing while in nursing school?

      Nowhere I know of would accept that. The reason they require critical care is for ventilator, hemodynamics and overall management of ICU patients.

    Hi, I am a nontraditional student meaning I am a few years older (just turned 27) and I have been working in a totally unrelated field to healthcare for the past few years. However, I completed most of my undergraduate coursework at Ohio State and I was preparing for medical school. However, life threw some curves at me and I had to work my current job full time for awhile. Finally, I am in a position to return to academics full time. I am starting a BSN RN degree program and my dream is to become a CRNA. However, I am concerned that my age will hurt me in the admissions process. What advice would you have for someone like me? Thanks

    Would a grade in nursing pre-reqs be a major concern? I got all As and Bs except a C in micro Lab. Would that affect my applications, and if so, should I retake it?

    • @TheSchoellerFamily
      @TheSchoellerFamily  5 років тому

      If you are interested in a certain school I would recommend you call or email them and ask what they suggest. If you aren't sure what school you want to attend I would suggest you take 1 or 2 more advanced science courses like O chem, biochem or physics and ace them to show you can excel in them. Those classes would be more helpful in crna school than micro.

    • @TheSchoellerFamily
      @TheSchoellerFamily  5 років тому +1

      Also wanted to add that if you are trying to apply to crna school asap I would go ahead and apply versus putting it off while you take classes. Since you did well in everything else and micro was an outlier they may consider that. Worst that can happen is they give you constructive feedback.

My patho professor in nursing school told me they actually kick students out if they find out that they are working while attending crna school, is that true? If not did you work while attending crna school and how are you handling everything financially if you're not working?

    Thanks for the video! Question, how did you go about getting letters of recommendation from work when you were travel nursing? Did you use your first icu unit, or mostly the managers of the units you traveled to? Id like to try traveling for another challenge and to save money, but wonder how to get the letters of rec. I need.

    • @TheSchoellerFamily
      @TheSchoellerFamily  6 років тому +3

      I got one from the manager on my first ICU unit and the other 2 while I was travel nursing. Before I left to go travel nursing I let my manager know I would be applying to CRNA school in the future and asked her if I could contact her for a letter. Then I made sure to introduce myself to the nurse managers on the assignments I did and towards the end I would ask them if they'd be willing to do it and then keep their info. Make sure they know who you are from day one and touch base with them throughout your assignment. Then at the end you will have a better chance of getting that letter. You can also ask the doctors you work with for letters!!
