- Infinity War: Russo Brothers on VFX & Avengers: Endgame
A few days ago, shortly before they won a number of VES Awards for Avengers: Infinity War, I sat down with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Dan Deleeuw (Visual Effects Supervisor), Russell Earl (VFX Supervisor, ILM), and Kelly Port (VFX Supervisor, Digital Domain) for an extended video interview about the incredible visual effects in 2018's biggest film.
While Marvel has raised the bar on almost every one of their films with their seamless VFX, Infinity War took everything to the next level with Thanos and it explains why the film took home the VES Awards top prize of “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature” along with wins for “Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature” (Titan), “Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature” (Thanos), and “Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Feature” (Titan again).
During my exclusive interview, the team and the Russo Brothers went into great detail about how the sequence featuring Thanos throwing the Titan moon came about, how they keep track of who is working on which shot, how fourteen VFX houses worked on the film, when they realized they could do Thanos as performance capture and it would look real, how the film only had eighty shots without VFX, if they altered any of the shots for the Infinity War Blu-ray release, how one of the reasons nothing leaks is because all the computers working on the film are air-gaped, how they designed the dusting at the end of the film, and so much more. In addition, at the end of the interview, Joe and Anthony revealed Avengers: Endgame is still running at three hours and they have to be done with the film at the end of March.

The unsung heroes. Can't believe how much of the film was actually CGI.
Phil Harrison
It’s basically an animated movie with a few live action pieces.
Lets make a song about Dan Deleeuw (Visual Effects Supervisor), Russell Earl (VFX Supervisor, ILM), and Kelly Port (VFX Supervisor, Digital Domain).
@@coldwind1791 You cannot say animated, it's virtual effect
Sumit Karki
It’s an animated movie man in the same manner as the incredible the only difference is that the avengers has live action actors.
@@coldwind1791 Have you lost your mind, animation and CGi,VFX is different things, are you really comparing live action character like Thanos with cartoon
The guy in the middle looks so paranoid that he's going to say something he shouldn't 😂
He’s actually the staff cleaner who accidentally sat down before the Russo brothers walked in and they can’t see that he’s not apart of the department team.
Luke McCann - LOL 😆
Russo Brothers are the best!
And liers some times😂😂

... when you need cheap DGA hires to keep the union off your back." Welcome to Colinwood (2002), You Me and Dupree (2006) and it's been 8 years since you guys directed anything so how about you guys pretend that you are directing our Captain America sequel. We already did all the work.
@@dondraper3898 what?
The VFX guys center and right look absolutely eXhausted. Thanks for all the hard work guys!
I think the words mr Russo was looking for to describe the scale of the work involved in this film is to quote strange "hither to undreamt of"
I get that reference
Did you seriously just say "hither to undreamt of?"
- "do you think studio is gonna be down with 3 hours movie?"
- "studio is down with whatever length of our story is"
...
Well that says much, it's not only sign of fate they have in this directors duo but also testament to Marvel Studios for putting the story before number of projections (shorter movie = more daily projections = more tickets sales = more $)
Dude, if Marvel don't have faith in The Russos after making the three best MCU movies, i don't know what...
@@filiporvik2782
Yeah it's obvious but i felt like pointing that out anyway
well i thought that movies like Lord of the rings or maybe Titanic ( don't know about that one) but because the movies were so long the price of tickets actually went up so from a monatery point of view i don't think it would affect them .
@@filiporvik2782 winter soldier being the best one
The top grossing movies usually have more than 2 hours runtime
1.Avatar
2.Titanic
3.The force awakens
4.Infinity war.
So don't worry
Wish they fixed Bruce's face in the hulkbuster. Everything else looked really good.
While they were at it, I wish they knew what the Bruce Banner character was supposed to be. Mark Ruffalo forgot a long time ago.
@@dondraper3898 agreed
Right ???? that one really stood out to me. It looks so weird !
Totally agree with all comment...I thought that scene with Ruffalo...looked horrible...it was so noticeably possibly because of the FX and his acting wasn't appropriate or just didn't mesh with the movie period....Edward (incredible Hulk)..did a better job imo.
Yeah that's one of my only complaints.
So impressed with the level of detail that went into creating Thanos. The cgi was so well done that I forgot he was all cgi during certain moments of film. I can't say the same for Banner in the hulk buster armor but I still appreciate the hard work that went into the VFX.
Thank you for that. I always wondered why Thanos looks so much better the hulk to me. Thanos was immaculate
Thanos isn’t all cgi... Josh Brolin does the motion capture for him
Oh my god.....that laugh! 😩 I can never unhear it again.
Finally a 3 hour movie!!!
a 2 hour 45 min movie with 15 min of credits
And a post credit scene as well
It's not confirmed though
@@ProfRavenSteel there is no post credit this is the final showdown it's win or die
@@katsam4457 that's not confirmed yet
Wtf is that laugh. And the sudden change to being composed like 5 seconds later to ask a normal question...frosty is psychotic.
04:19 Russo tries to discredit toy leaks. I appreciated the effort. S/o to Thor's hammer.
Shout out to hulk busting out of hulkbuster 😉

I saw a toy that had the soul stone in caps wakanden shield

I LOVE YOU RUSSO BROS.💓💓💓....
One of the best directors of today's generation
I can’t wait People don’t know what we are about to witness. And yes, this guys should be recognized as true artists
My boy Ant looks so tired. Making 2 movies back to back must be so excruciating
Yup, but now he's probably going to take a nice break with all the things that money can buy xD
I think its better not to be part of the test screenings. I rather see the final product.
Yeah, back to back must be so awkward during shooting, like what's the one guy doing while the other is facing the actors. And when one of them needs to use the toilet, does the other guy straddle the water tank?
@@2nd3rd1st
This comment deserves my like. 👍🏽
18:21 *easy there Frosty*
What in the flying hell was that lmao
Ugh!
HahaHaja
I’d love to meet Feige and the Russo Brothers and pick their brains to see how they were able to pull off IW and Endgame.
Zach Kelsey $10 Kevin will play it coy for most of the interview
The dark bags under the eyes of these artists shows how much effort they've been putting into this. I cannot wait for this movie.
If there's no intermission I'm definitely staying away from drinks lol
Those 3 worked harder than The Actors did
Thank u collider for taking this interview
VFX guy in the centre: Hurry up guys we have scenes to finish. God, I am exhausted.😂
As someone who's watched IW 12 times since it came out.. how does one become a member of these "test" screenings they speak of lol.
We can't, test screenings involve Board Members, Stake Holders , family & friends of Cast Members, Producers, Directors, Executives etc
12 only lol
@@dylanfernandez3910 damn i have seen it just 9 times
test screenings aren't as fun as they sound.. there could be weird pacing and unfinished CGI...
You watch mainly to be constructive and not for enjoyment
A lot of times the movies aren’t complete. The CGI in some shots isn’t finished and in others it’s not even there. I’d rather see the finished product
Both Joe and Anthony look TIRED asf! They're definitely taking a break after endgame.
A long and well-deserved break at that
no, they're doing a movie with Tom Holland right after lol
I want to hear captain America say “Avengers Assemble” then you see all the avengers together gearing up and ready to battle
Absolutely amazing interview, Steven, thank you so much!
This was a fantastic interview, extremely well done.
I wish Ellis or Harloff would do these interviews, anyone but frosty.
Russo brothers are best in MCU. Marvel movies would never be on this scale without them.
Im sure i'll go watch Endgame at least few times in theater. First in 2D with improved video and audio system of theater, than in 3D IMAX.
Cannot wait guys 😬🙌🏻
The interviewet was really good and had interesting questions!
Gotta hand it to these guys, they don't get enough praise. The Russos and Feige are phenomenal visionaries but they need the technical strength of artists like these to bring their ideas to life.
We're so lucky to have movies like this man.
Words can’t describe how excited I am for Engame
The Russos are true superheroes for their amazing creations for these wonderful films. A big shout out to the VFX guys as well. It is wonderful to feel like a kid again when you can watch theses characters come to life on the screen from the pages of comic books.
This was so interesting to watch! I love seeing the people who work behind the scenes to create awesome movies like Infinity War! I cant wait to see Avengers Endgame!!!
Amazing storytellers. All of them just amazing storytellers
Kevin Fiege is just off camera giving them all the stare..
Well deserved win and nomination!!
Great interview.
These guys are amazing but that guy in the middle has the look of a killer lol
That’s why there’s no leaks
Wonder what he’s does on his off time 😂
Rocky well...
Killing VFX scenes 😂
Notice they never hand him the mic 😂
*Oh it's Frosty....more stumbling and bumbling.*
God it's so much hard work behind the camera
Those 5 people are very intelligent, I really respect that
Love these guys
he said nothing ever leaked because of toys, but i def. remember a "giant man" ant man toy leaking.
Lol the Funko
This needs more views
People always say say I'm tired of CGI in films, and this and that yet without CGI films like all these marvel films wouldn't be possible
So they DO fix shots for the blurays! I really wish the effects houses that worked on Black Panther fixed those third act shots that movie deserved better. Especially since is been so nominated for awards
yeah, i remember this interview
How the heck does Frosty get all the exclusives with The Russos! Kudos to you dude! Thanks for sharing
The most interesting part of the interview was when the guy at the bottom left was describing the lighting for the snap. He talked about souls! They went to the soul world
Three mics for five people, great job!
Please. Infinity War deserves the Oscar.
*"RUSSO!!"*
- Frank Castle
Thanks 😊
There's no way they aren't talking about the Banner in the Hulkbuster shot in terms of polishing before Blu Ray.
Nominate Infinity War for Best Picture via Disney.
Why cant DC have talent like this. Roll on End Game
Because DC's writers don't have the passion that Marvel's writers do. Kevin Feige built the MCU on passionate writers and directors. DC just want to make money.
i agree 100%
@@aaronmills9935 Stop being a DC hater. “I don’t see a rivalry,” & “I see cool films being made" - Kevin Feige
I've just realised that the Thanos poster behind him gave us a *SPOILER* for AIW... _see that mirror world effect Dr Strange does_ *in the poster?*
How is that a spoiler though?
*sigh*
@@jebatman756 coz I don't know what it's called...😅
Pete Johnes maybe foreshadowing but not a spoiler
Dr Strange: I am sorry Tony, that was the only way.
So that's what he did!?
its amazing how many people it takes to make a movie and yet things rarely get leaked
Truely blur a line between what's real what's VFX. To become just a tool for storytelling. Amazing works and corrabolation.
the real heroes are the THOUSANDS of vfx artists world-wide (vancouver, america, london, new zealand etc.)
Not a big fan of this interviewer. The questions felt a little too convergent and specific that it ends up bottlenecking what the artists have to say in my opinion.
need that Thanos Pic in the background!!
that guy in the middle, i thin he consumed a lot LOT of caffeine
😂
13:30 they talk about the lighting and dusting and how the soul was supposed to be seen. So people aren’t dead they are stuck inside the soul realm 🤯🤯
So they're saying the toys with the Time Travel Suits...they aren't real... *BAD LIAR*
Just like they said the title of the next Avengers movie was never spoken in IW lol
Pete Johnes no im pretty sure they said that 99% of the toys ain’t accurate
Pete Johnes They’re lying. The set leak photos clearly show the actors with the time travel suits with the circles on their hands just like in the toys. (Unless they waisted time and money filming fake scenes)
There are no leaked set photos of time travel suits, only of those "watches".
@@JohnSmith-gm1mc they never leaked any type of suits lol
Guy in the middle looks exhausted and needs a hug 😂
It kind of surprises me that there WERE any non-VFX shots. I can't think of any shots in the film that weren't CGI. Like, maybe Wanda and Vision bedroom? But Vis is partly CG. Yeah. Wow.
I mean there is alot of dialogue, like tony and pepper, doc strange and in the avengers base.
I always used to wonder how the team protects such huge secrets from leaking, considering the number of people working on it and the demand a single minor spoiler has
in regard to leak question, u should have asked "What was the russo's reaction when infinity war trailer at D23 got leaked out"
That laugh in the background.
@emergencyawesome YES!
The toy leaks thing is so accurate. I remember seeing like 800 different Dark Knight toys that never appeared in any of the movies, but had the same logo regardless. It's just stupid. Lol
That’s dark knight. LEGO and a lot of other companies drop a lot of toys that don’t usually make the final film cause remember they have to have the toys’ concept art done, made and shipped well before the movie is scheduled to release so it might mean them getting work for the toy early in the filming or editing process but who knows what they got correct for end game ?
"We point cameras at green and encourage improv. The Philippines does the rest."
When is that?
These are the real hero’s
lol toy leaks are very accurate.
Hulk coming out of the Hulkbuster was not in the movie so ... not accurate.
Ben Bell not really. 50/50 maybe
LEGO sets aren’t accurate all the time
Thanos ominously looms in the background...
Good first question
The real magician yesssss
How does one get in these test audiences?
I still don't know which one is Ant or Joe...
18:21 I didn’t know frosty hung out with Jaba the Hutt
He tried to trap em with that "toy leak" comment
Funny because like 2 scenes leaked for infinity war in 2017 🤣
67 days til Avengers 4!
He should've asked why there was a Hulk (in Wakanda) in the trailer, but not in the movie (since they were mentioning him).
Anybody else finally relieved the interviewer went through the whole interview without saying THAYNOS? lol
CGI Hero looking very tired .. i know you guys and your team is a real HERO ..
i guess warner brothers wants to hire them as vfx
I notice Frosty doesn’t like to curse anymore, why? Did something happen, he used to curse during interviews now he doesn’t.
K0NY718 who is frosty
@@joelmiller2601 the interviewer, thats his nick name...dont know the origin of why though
To all the negative reviewers out there who said infinity war was bad: listen to the Russo Brothers here. The most iconic directors of all time in Marvel
No doubt. Infinity war is one of the best Hollywood movie of all time and is my all time favourite movie.
That’s a weird ass laugh
oh yeah yeah
They look so nervous 😳 trying not to spoil anything.
They're probably just exhausted editing the movie and going revisions of the vfx and additional photography.
@@kubersingh5633 yeah that's true. That has to be exhausting
