This event demonstrated how terrible the US was when it came to fighting in forest like combat, esspecially in Germany. Hurtgen Forest was America's meat grinder. The Germans knew what they were doing. Esspecially with those 88's packed up in the thick forest, safe from Artillery, Aircraft and Tanks, there was no way the Allies were getting through this.
@@josh.palaci3276 You have to take into account that attacking tactics used in WW1 were no good when it came to trench warfare unless you had huge amounts of men. The Americans stepped in when no one else would and captured that forest
@@gidmichigan1765 I would say they did, their commanding officer constantly had land mines spread throughout the area, and the forest were so thick it would be close to impossible to encircle the Germans, given their position and the circumstance, i would say so.
Not all minefields are mapped. When running into one during an attack, you can't just stop and report "Yeah there were mines there boss, we gave up" . At least in WW2 you couldn't.
@General arollite its either run through a minefield or face the commanding officer's gun, not one step back, they had no choice in the matter, that's order 227 for you
Hurtgen forest a training ground for new troops on both sides. The US Army was getting new troops who did not see combat so they were thrown into the Hurtgen Forest then when their division was shot up it was pulled out to be refitted and another one thrown in this meat grinder. They quickly learned or they ended up dead or wounded.
You know, my great grand dad fought in both the Eastern front and against the British and Americans and I know from him that the way German infantry is portrayed in movies and shows is bs. They weren't like fuckin stormtroopers lol. They shredded the Americans and fought with just as much grit, determination, and tactical skill. They just didn't have the resources or manpower left to hold whatever they won. It was either hold, or hold until you have to retreat. He said they all knew by the time Russians pushed them back to Poland and the Americans made it to the German border that the end was near, but he said him and his boys were damned if they weren't gonna make them bleed for every CM they scraped into German land. Anyway, that's why I hate these movies showing the American heroes mowing down Germans like they're stormtroopers. The Japanese did that.

Mainly, because the US supplied Britain and the UK with so much oil, tanks, jeeps, coal, food, water, planes, and naval warships, that the Russians and UK were ABLE to degrade German capacity enough so that when the Americans finally had mustered enough troops, the blow would be decisive. And each one was. North Africa was a complete success. Italy was tough fought, but tied up 2 dozen panzer divisions away from the Eastern Front. It looks like it's from one of the liberation movies, I cannot say for sure thought since I have only seen the first one. Historically speaking it is probably the second of third films since the last two are about the battle of Berlin and the first one is about Kursk and does not have this scene.
I was recently discussing the torpedo aspect of this with a friend. Had the Germans managed to do that where the invasion actually took place, most ships would have been sunk.
Yeah, fighting in a forest, ESPECIALLY when Flak Cannons involved, might be one of the worst terrains to fight in. Any tree that gets hit explodes into wooden shrapnel, not to mention the actual shrapnel from the cannons, and the trees falling over onto you.

Attacking straight through a mine field? No engineers or skirmishers? Then the 88's open up. This attack was doomed to fail before it started.

by the time the US army landed in Europe the German army was already severely weakened - starved by oil, troops, and morale.

Even the wood splinters from trees in the woods were deadly after being hit by a shell , resulting in many dead and wounded.
